Stylish big guy on a minnow shaped 31 incher, Dave Lemieux
11:45 a.m. Sunday, August 25th
Driving all night from the Big Apple, I was
tired and ragged upon entering the Boston
city limits under grey, drizzling skies.
Skaters had been gathering at the Charles
River Skater Co. all morning in anticipation
of the proposed streetstyle event. It didn't
look like they would be doing any skating
today.
My partner, assigned to tail contest
coordinator Thomas Stahle, made contact
from his cruiser parked down the street
from the skate shop. He briefed me about
Stahle's dedication over the past week
putting together the event. Now, after i
building all the ramps, suffering various
transportation screw ups and finally getting
them to the contest sight, only to have two
ramps trashed by city dumpers early
Sunday morning, Tom was in the shop
trying feverishly to pull something together.
I yanked a younger skater off the
sidewalk and squeezed him for info. It
seems Joanne had lined up a city operated
indoor roller rink on the other side of the
river. Just then the Loud Ones and their
entourage skidded up.
2:00 p.m.
After learning of the change in contest
venue the skaters were again off and
running. My partner and I knew the
location of the MDC rink and took an
alternative route to give our suspects
some breathing room. It looked like Stahle
was going to make this contest happen no
matter what. It was this kind of skate
dedication that we had been seeing him
display all summer long with the N.I.C.LS.
series contests; a perfect example of how
skaters were taking things into their own
hands. These guys would stop at nothing
just to skate.
We have Thomas Stahle in custody after
catching him in the act of dismantling a
picnic table at the roller rink in an apparent
attempt to make a streetstyle ramp of
some sort. After all his labor the
remainder of the original contest ramps
hadn't showed and he was eager to get
something going for the strong turn-out of
skaters milling about.
We were on the verge of cuffing him
downtown on a vandalism charge when
our attention was turned by the announce-
ment of a Mark Gonzales and Tommy
Guerrero demo. These guys didn't need
ramps to blaze their brand of skate style.
Using a series of park benches, curbs and
even a garbage can dragged out onto the
pidgeon doo covered surface of the
abandoned rink, they dazzled the diehard
crowd of onlookers with bench sliding rock
'n rollers, Gonzollies and backside method
airs off the meager display of skate
obstacles. We then realized that there was
no stopping this skate plague from taking
over the precious youth of this country.
Whether it be a full blown contest/session.
on one of those backyard half-pipes or just
a go for fun session of street commrades,
the New England area was definitely right
up there with the rest of the skate stoked
world. I would have to file a report later that
day and it wasn't going to read like I had
expected. These skaters were not respon-
sible for malicious acts of violence or
property damage to anybody except
maybe themselves. They were guilty of
having fun but I knew, as much as I didn't
like it, that we would never be able to put a
stop to it.
