We Don't All Ride Tractors...
Dateline: Saturday July 27, 1985
Midwest Amateur Ramp Series,
Contest No.3-Milwaukee Wiscon
sin.
As I search for words to try and
describe this event, the lyrics of a
Crustles song keep coming to
mind; "We don't look like farmers
the midwest really shreads/we
don't all ride tractors/the midwest
isn't dead. "Yes indeed, some of us
ride skateboards and the success
of this event clearly proved the
midwest isn't dead.
The third in a series of ramp
contests for unsponsored skaters,
it was hosted by the Beaudoins,
who were the first in Milwaukee to
build a modern-day skate-structure
In their yard a few years ago. The
energy was high as skaters arrived
from a half a dozen states,
including an especially large group
from the Minneapolis area and one
skater from Santa Cruz, CA
Skaters were divided into two
classes, A and B, with over 20
skaters in each class. Each class
was broken down into three 2
groups. Each group had 20 minute
jams in which skaters were chosen.
for the final ams.
Mrs. Beaudoin rah around doing
mom-type thinge and cad was
vending hotdogs and pop as the B
class competition got underway A
lot of upcoming talent was evident
as every square foot of the
badkyard was filed with spéo-
tators. Going into the Acess finals
the crowd was getting what they
wanted and it was apparent that
Marly Beaudoin and the other
judges were going to have a hard
time. Three particular favorites,
Jim Reese, Greg Bahn and Gomer
Istavanik looked ke they could
have all tied for first. All these guys
were hot, but Gomer was pulling
way high backside airs and the
crowd was going crazy. He was t
more consistent with his moves
pulling off some didn't even sép
him practice and consequently
won the event.
Afterwards those crazy Crusties)
played and halfway through their
set the winners were announced
awarded and congratulated.
Stickers were then thrown out on
top of the Crusties, they began to
play and lots of chaotic fun was
had. The Milwaukees men in blue
arrived, breaking things up
Seems the neighborhood had all it
could take The nonstop skate
types headed down to the infam
ous ditch call The Spot for more
skating and then to the secret eight
half barrel (we like beer) house
party which was no longer secret
The action didnt stop there. The
next day a semi-organized
streetstyle contest was held and
there was one thing knew for
sure. The Midwest Isn't Dead

NICKEL BAG No.4- Where's
Tommy?
Because of the sketchy ground
the ramp lies on (i.e. the Chief), no
one knew if this contest was going
to go off as planned. John (Car-
wash) said things were o.k. with
his folks so with the help of the
sponsors this event went off
without a hitch.
Saturday a big crowd of spec-
tators and skaters showed. Steve
and Art Godoy (just turned pro)
were present. Jay Henry, Dan Tag.
Steve the wierdo and the Barn
Boys (Caine bros.) were up from
New Jersey. There was a surprise
apearance by Larry Hitch and the
Glue Heads from Madison
Wisconsin. Dighton Bays were in
full force. Everyone was ripping it
up and having a good time.
Sunday everyone met back at
the ramp and the session began
again. Were having such a good
time skating that everyone
decided to have a raffle instead of
a contest. The goods were raffled
off, the barbeque flowed and so did
the skate energy Special thanks to
all of the sponsors: Rodneys Surf
and Skate, Skate Away U.S.A.,
THRASHER Magazine and
Walker. See ya in Montreal!!!

Nooney
