Flaming frontside fright-flight, Lance Mountain.
Sunday morning, June 30th - By the
time I got to the ramp on Sunday morning.
the final practice session for the pros was
already in full swing. The crowd surround-
ing the ramp was at full capacity and all
attempts at crowd control were impossible.
An occasional board sailing off of the ramp
into the crowd was the only thing that
seemed to keep them from completely
overrunning it. Those who gathered to wit-
ness the contest are the stuff of which
psychologist's dreams are made of. At
times it seemed like the skate equivalent of
Woodstock. One guy was actually selling
rock star photos for $3.00. This amount
could have bought you a coke or two at
another stand or a six pack of beer (the
favorite crowd beverage) at the 7-11 lo-
cated just down the road. Rumour has it
that the owners of the store were able to
retire after the weekend of the contest and
are now living comfortably in a penthouse
suite in Miami. Gregor Rankine, amateur
victor, was amazed that there were still hip-
eyes in existence. After deciphering his
Kiwi accent, I realized that he was speaking
of hippies, which are on the endangered
species list in New Zealand. Rankine dub-
bed this event, "Days of the hip-eye revi-
sited." Neil Blender, consumate modern
man, was even observed going back to
nature, casually munching some berries
from the forest.
Back at the ramp, K.T. had gotten the
crowd to calm down long enough to get the
pro eliminations underway. The pro event
was run similar to the am's with a cut to 8
and then a jam, a welcome change from
past N.S.A. events. The standard of skating
in the pro ranks is so high at this point that
a missed trick or a fall will send you to the
showers before a sweat is even worked up.
Such was the case at Tahoe, as a couple
of top notch skaters, including Christian
Hosol, failed to make the eight cut. When
skaters start attempting 540's in the pre-
lims, you know that things are getting
tough. Skaters who made the cut at Mile
High were: Ken Park, Lance Mountain,
Tony Hawk, Chris Miller, Lester Kasai, Alan
Losi, Gator and John Lucero.
The first skater up, John Lucero, was
skating with an injured wrist, but he was
stoked to make his first final as a pro. John
was making the canyon look pretty damn
small with some lofty ollie channels. Ken
Park took a couple of bad beefs during the
jam but nevertheless put in one of his best
performances as a pro. One-footed An-
drechts on the extensions and various
channel airs were all part of his plan. Gator
was favoring a bad knee but you wouldn't
have known it by some of his lines, which
included "Gatairs" and air to pogos on the
extension. Extended frontside handplants
were also making him look rather good.
Lester Kasal made the cut but he couldn't
hold on to many of his bio tricks because of
a heavily taped hand and wrist. Lester still
managed to put in a very respectable per-
formance. Chris Miller ripped it up, way high
fronside boneless', ollies and nose bone
airs helped him finish way up there. Alan
Losi was also laying into the Tahoe ramp.
Lofty Japan airs and varial inverts on the
extension were just two of the bio tricks in
his routine. Tony Hawk was one of only two
skaters able to pull off 540's at the Mile
High ramp. Varial canyon airs and lofty
frontside and backside air variations
proved that he is always the man to beat.
Lance, however, was out to prove that he
was the man to do it because he blazed this
ramp like you have never seen. He landed
four 540's during the jam and beefed up all
of his runs by using every inch of the ramp.
He was so relaxed during the jam it was
easy to forget he was in the finals at Mile
High and not at home on his ramp. Stalled
sadplants over the channel? Give this man
a psychological exam! On his last McTwist
he didn't even set up with an axle stall, he
just did a speedy 50/50 and then dialed it
in. In typical Mountain fashion (100% fun).
Lance lit his board on fire before the start
of his last run and proceeded to skate like
nothing mattered. This had the crowd roar-
ing in approval, but contest directors and
other grown-up types were not laughing.
Lancie finished his run and SIO Barry
pounced on his board like it was some kind
of three-alarm fire, dousing the flames with
his shoe. This was the cue for all concerned
to empty onto the ramp awaiting what was
to follow, which was nothing short of anar-
chy. KT had to again appeal to the masses
to be mellow so that he could announce the
contest results. Those who would not coop-
erate and were already throwing stickers,
stopped real quick-like after witnessing Mr.
Fausto's attempt to hurl someone to the
bottom of the ramp.
The contest results were as follows: Luc-
ero finished 8th, Lester was in 7th, Gator
wound up in 6th and Ken park in 5th. 4th
place belonged to Chris Miller and 3rd was
Alan Losi's, who was quite stoked to say
the least. Tony Hawk finished in 2nd place
for once in his life and 1st place was all
Lance Mountain's, the guy more than de-
served it.
Anything resembling order ended im-
mediately after the awards were an-
nounced. The sticker/product/bottle/dead
cat throw had to be moved elsewhere in
order to save the ramp from being annihi-
lated. Lake Tahoe's finest were again in
attendance and this time they were taking
prisoners, no questions asked. The traffic
jam surrounding the contest site was re-
miniscent of 1-5 during rush hour. Mike
Chantry was recruiting people for the
monumental task of cleaning up the ramp
area, which had enough bottles around it to
build a two story house with. Bryce
Kanights was among those who were
checking out the post-contest session.
which included Chris Cook going at it sans
pads and a young girl doing frontside and
backside grinders. Most of those left were
either hanging out or packing up. I opted for
the later, embarking on another 11 hour
drive which included a downhill run, a flat
tire, a 1 hour wrong turn, more bad music
and bad food. Such is life.
