"Mama We're All Crazy Now" was
especailly singalong. Things were
looking up, then the rain came down
in buckets. Blackfoot were pretty
damned good. Heaps of drums,
bags of riffs and lashings of ginger
beer. U.F.O. were almost melodical
Their set was lively with not a hint of
boredom. They also got the first en-
core, with "Doctor, Doctor," Predict
able. Meatloaf was his usual bulb-
ous, tuneful self. I quite enjoyed him
until he started shouting about how
mean he was. The Scorpions rip-
ped into their set with enough
energy to get things up to a high per-
formance state of affairs. Their use
of the crowd was terrific. Also, the
PA was turned up for them, and with
1/4 of a million watts on tap, it was L-
O-U-D. They were definitely like
able. Some dudes were so into it,
they were mud wrestling in a big cir-
cle. The Scorps appeared pissed
about the hype Deep Purple had
been getting. They left their mark,
and Purple, with a hell of a job on
their hands, but, Deep Purple lived
up to it. Keeping the crowd waiting
until 9:45 to start wasn't a wise
move. They probably wanted the
tinuously and wrecklessly. At the
Stone was some hip-hop-rockin'
and jammin' by those L.A. boys, the
Red Hot Chile Peppers. The house
was packed with babes, who were
lovin' it, especially when vocalist
Anthony took off his American Flag
mini-skirt in favor of nothing except
the foot sock off the end of his
schwantz-genitalia. The girlies were
gasping and squirming and swearin'
hard at this one...Well, it finally hap-
pened. We tried to erase it from our
past, but it came back anyway. We
tried to forget it, but we remembered
it just the same. You're probably
wondering what in the hell I'm talkin
about, well "It's the '60s man." The
spirit has come back to San Fran
cisco, in late June, in the form of a
two day concert in Golden Gate
park, featuring a bunch of the people
who used to do this same sort of
deal way back when, when you
could go to prison for the posession
of a marijuana joint. Some of the
performers included The DI-
nosaurs and Kantner, Balin, Cas-
sady, fragments of Jefferson
Airplane (Airplane Parts?) and
Starship from the past; Jack Cas-
sady, Marty Balin and Paul Kant-
ner. There was Band of Gypsies
which featured Randy Hansen on
Jimi Hendrix guitar variations, a
band called Trak, who were winners
of MTV's Basement Tapes contest.
At the end of their set, Eddie Money
came out and did two songs. Carlos
Santana came on to play with John
Lee Hooker, Translator played,
which was worth missing because
they definitely aren't a big outdoor
rock-type band and are best limited
to clubs like the I-Beam, where the
pretty people can go see them. The
gig was an effort to drum up cash
and food for the hungry, especially
those Africans we've been hearing
so much about. It was, for the most
part, an enthusiastic success and
another one is tentatively scheduled
for Sept. 22nd, at the Polo Fields in
Golden Gate Park. Bands featured
will hopefully include The Di-
nosaurs, The Grateful Dead, a
couple other big old bands and
some more contemporary, sub-level
enthusiastic energy music, Le..
semi-punk stuff. Rumor has it that

Add to that Deep Purple's first En-
glish gig since their reformation in
April 1984, and maybe you begin to
understand it. Tommy Vance, the
Radio One hard-rock DJ announced
the first band Alaska. The crowd
didn't like Tommy, so hundreds of
plastic beer bottles flew up on stage.
Alaska went up on stage, again the
bottles flow. Mountain, a U.S. band
were next. Better than Alaska with
good riffs and bass, but soon degen-
erated to less worthwhile tones.

The current onslaught of roots

hard to separate the sincere bands
from the band-wagon jumpers.
However, the Tail Gators, in my
opinion, are playin' from the heart

is a little on the high end, but still, this
comes across audibly, making you
wonder how much better some of
the songs sound live. The singer's
vocals sound like some whiskey voi-

teen hundreds, wild west type bank
robber stuff. Like in "Ballad of Jesse
