By now it was noon, the amateur and pro
freestyle competition was scheduled to
begin. A large crowd of spectators
gathered around the banked reservoir as
the Am finals began. Camden Scott blew
the crowd's mind with assorted tricks and
antics of his own, landing him in eighth
place. Fabian Cravats styled his way to
seventh and Doug Zyskowski rail flipped
into sixth place. Victor Starr worked hard
for fifth place. Although a youngster, Bali
Sahota from San Jose, stayed on top of his
moves to earn a fourth place spot. Lynn
Cooper pulled out many tricks, old and
new, on his way to third place. Andre
Walton took the second place spot behind
Gregg Smith who out performed all with an
assorted batch of flowing moves.
Next on the agenda, was the pro free-
style. Mike Foster finger flipped his way to
eighth place with Jason Catalano just
ahead of him in seventh. In sixth place was
Primo Desiderio who flashed a lot of style
and accuracy during his routine. Bob
Schmelzer blazed into fifth and Steve
Rocco showed off his stuff for fourth place.
Kevin Harris from Canada performed
stylishly with many difficult moves putting
him in third place. Per Welinder captured
second place with handstand shove-its and
plenty of other rad stunts. Although Rodney
Mullen fell on his butt during his last
routine, he managed to flow along with all
of his variations and innovative manuevers
to remain on top of the competition with
another first place win. Can Rodney ever
lose? Well, at least now we know he can
fall.
The crowd began to surge around the
keyhole; the Pro Semi-finals in the pool
were about to begin. The top twelve skaters
would be cut to eight then to four and finally
to the top two skaters. By now it was late
afternoon and the sun above the overcast
sky was beginning to drop. The arena
around the pool was filled beyond capacity
with over anxious spectators who were
cheering wildly as each competitor blasted
aerials higher and higher. The head to
head format proved to be stale as far as
judging this event (as well as most other
vertical contests). The reason being, many
competitors who ripped hard were aced
out of the finals by a 33 of a point or so.
Most of these guys pulled off unique tricks.
bio runs and definitely deserved to be in
the finals. The "Jam" format is no doubt the
way to go.
The top eight finalists were Lester Kasai,
Billy Ruff, Chris Miller, Kevin Staab, Jeff
Phillips, Mark Rogowski, Christian Hosoi,
and Tony Hawk. From here they went head
to head then cut to four. All of these guys
were tearing hard and utilizing every part
of the pool. Lester was blasting head high
mute airs, while Gator floated 360 degree
fastplants and inverts to fakie. Jeff Phillips
boasted a few method airs, eggplants, and
frontside elguerials; Bill Ruff rode every
possible part of the pool with moves like
gay twists, switch-a-roos, and one-footed
lien airs. Chris Miller and Christian Hosoi
were both leaping skyward with 6 foot plus
backside aerials. Kevin Stabb remained
his consistent self with five foot Indy airs,
blunts, and high fakie ollies. Tony Hawk

A large gather was pinned at Bi
Ruff's partment organize a caravan to
araging party aout 5 min south of Det
mar On the way out of town Allen Los
made an illeg lett turn out of a gas station
en route to the freeway and was pued
over by a local sheriff To my surprise
cense was reported to be defunct
by the cop So Al told me to drive By this
time all of the cars in the caravan were
down the highway fifteen miles or so and
we had no directions to the party We drove
back to the skatepark and got word of
another party in Card We all agreed that
this wasplan First we stopped off for
Supper and then dropped by the Santa
Cruz Teams motel room When the
door opened we saw about thirty skaters
hideout ike legal aliens. They were milling
around in silence being careful not to spark
any attention from the hotel management
We left most of them in their paranoia and
headed to Cardiff
When we arrivet at the party there were
a few siammo types hanging around. The
backyard offered a rather cool swimming
pool jacuzz and a sauna The keg amved
and a small group of us gathered in the
sauna torage with a party of our own
Next we decided to go swimming in the
pool and join some females in the
jacuzz taking full advantage of
what the party grounds offered
seemed to be in control of the contest with
McTwists, varial inverts, forward fakie
ollies and much more. The crowd went wild
as these guys gave it their all against each
other.
Chris Miller suprised himself by landing
in the fourth place spot, Lester was right in
front of him with third. Christian held a
close second to the top man Tony Hawk
As these four skaters went head to head
in the finals, the standings didn't change,
even though there were times when double
elminiation had become a factor. Such was
the case between Christian and Tony
Hawk. These two guys were putting every-
thing possible into their runs. Both were
hovering McTwists high in the night sky.
And ripping harder than any skater I've
ever seen at Del Mar. As Alan Losi would
later state "in order to win a pro contest at
Del Mar you have to do McTwists and
make 'em every time." Christian lost to
Tony on the first run-off, so Christian
skated against Lester and beat him. Next,
Christ had to go against Tony for the
second time and prevailed over him. Now
Christ and Tony had to go at it once more
since they both lost once. (You have to
lose twice to be eliminated). The final runs
between these two pros were rad to say
the least. Christ fell on a 7 foot McTwist
attempt leaving Tony in control once again.
And that's just what Tony Hawk did, he
lashed out all his tricks, remained in con-
trol, took the win, the money, and a large
breath in relief.
Christ, an offering to the masses.
