DOWN AND DIRTY DEPT.
Amidst the largest contest crowd in
skate history the Del Mar Park environs
managed to emerge somewhat intact.
(Which is more than you can say for some
of the organizers who are rumored to be
retiring due to battle fatigue incurred during
the fracas). The sticker toss sent a few
battered afficionados off to the first aid,
lockers in search of the true meaning of
life. The banner trample sent a few spon-
soring manufacturers off to a closed door
Ramp meeting in search of the true meaning of
promotion. The archaic head-on-head
format visibly drained quite a few perfor
mers including Christ and Tony Hawk
who were forced to perform an absurd
number of times. The high tide overflow
toilets caught most by suprise except for
the erudite Fats Macintyre (who but the
oldest surf rat would have thought of going
barefoot in order to keep his shoes dry?)
Lucero's conceptual freestyle mockery
was superb as were Mullen's ultra rad
one-wheeled one-footed nose and tail
360's Grisham's unveiling of the trick of
the century, the fakie body slam, also was
noteworthy, new training techniques were
also revealed by Billy Ruff who insisted on
working out all night in preparation for the
final. Conspiratorial gestures were per-
petuated by Blender and an unlabeled
provocateur who attempted to subvert the
contest's high ideals by inserting a bogus
compulsory trick in order to stimulate a
All contests are Pro/Am events, however
the number of Amateur contestants will be
limited in order to keep a reasonable con-
test level. All ages compete as one group.

now skate trend. Undoubtedly the low
point (or high point depending upon your
personal interpretation) of the event was,
the beer can and money toss. In close
contention for more marginal manipulation
was the visiting Maori warrior who repor
tedly performed the stick sit trick with a
pointed broom handle. To describe the
crowd as overhyped would be sheer under-
statement. The only source of sanity in this
sea of skate psychosis was "don't call me
Disco Brad Dorfman's massive
motorhome and hospitality room. In this
mobile apartment complex hundreds of
pounds of free food were voraciously
consumed by the mongrel hordes who
managed to clear the Vision magnates
elaborate security measures. Perhaps it
should be noted that the crew had installed
a fail safe destructo device that was clev-
erly disguised as Paul Schmidt's tuna
salad. Strangely the team locos never
touched this mysterious culinary concoc-
tion. Elsewhere, America's newest man-
ufacturing darling, Hosoi, dispensed decks,
decals, hats and shirts as promotional
items, Day Glow attire appeared to be the
new standard of the masses. Despite
abundant distractions Lester Kasal and
Chris Miller managed to turn in splendid
runs. Other desperate acts included:
Owen Nelders' golden gloves demo,
Grossos' mysto deck sponsors, Jay
Smiths' coaching attire, Bob Skoldberg's
vow to regain the slalom title Ty Page's
parking lot freestyle demo and the ar-
ganizer's persistance in managing to keep
all of that nasty dirt off of those slick new
trophies. For good measure on his way out
of town Tommy Guerrero somehow
snagged Bryce's skate stuff and plane
ticket thus stranding the latter several
hundred miles from his home. How's that
for Happy Easter Guerrero stylo?

CASTING CAN DEPT.
With the rise in skate popularity it's only
natural that the mass media starts paying
attention. When the Coca Cola Company
recently cast a commercial for Cherry
Coke they put the word out tht expert
skaters only need apply. Of course over
two hundred acting hopefuls armed with
brand new unnidden cheapo toy store
reject skates showed up. Following the
survival of the fittest format the field eventu-
ally narrowed down to Billy Ruff, Erick
Sanderson and Marc Hostetter. These
genuine sorts put on such a show that the
crew applauded upon the commercial's
completion.
GIFT DEPT.
Talking real dirt: Just in time for Passover
that considerate young man Craig
Johnson left what in modern circles is
politely described as "the ole number two"
at the front door of a prominent Newport
Beach skate manufacturer. And for those
of you who still don't get it, it wasn't wrap-
ped.
Talking more Texas trash: viscious
twister type tornadoes ripped the over
famous Clown ramp from its moorings and
carried it into a nearby power pool offec-
tively destroying most of its much admired
contours. Newton and the gang are re-
building
For public exposure of another sort
consider the collection of beaten, abused
and very used Fogtown cues that ended
up in the hands of mannequins in Neiman
Marcus' plush S.F. store window. How
they got there is anyone's guess, but a
persistent rumor blames of the actions of
an alleged Salinas Bail Bondsman.
CIVIC AWARENESS DEPT.
Cities across the North American conti-
nent seem to finally be turning into skate
energy. Virginia Beach, Burlingame and
Roseville are each considering possible
variations on public ramps and public
skate parks for their citizens.
CAUGHT IN THE ACT DEPT.
Right there, standing in the deep end,
paint brush in hand was one Stacy Peralta.
On the deck was the uptight ultra conserva-
tive apartment house manager. The ques-
tion was why. The answer: apparently Mr.
Peralta just happened to be skating by
when he observed some misdirected
youths vandalizing the empty apartment
house pool. Being your basic good citizen
Stacy chased them off and just happened
to be cleaning up the mess when the
manager arrived. And if you believe that
you'll also probably believe that Tony
Hawk just happened to be hiding in some
nearby bushes by coincidence. Apparently
quick thinking and good citizenship goi
hand in hand.

GIVE A BOY A HOME DEPT.
G.S.D., that typical homeless wait, most
recently was evicted from his latest ad hoc
housing arrangement when a misdirected
roll sent Davis' body crashing through the
ceiling of one Tracker industries. A sub-
sequent survey of the damage caused one
Uncle Tom to have homeless Gary exiled
from the factory loft. Undaunted G.S.D.
was later busted (again) for sleeping in J.
Grant Brittain's darkroom sink. Word has
it that a GSD model is being considered so
that its massive revenues can be used to
house this homeless person. And if you
think you can crash for free examine the
plight of a gaggle of skaters who unfortu-
nately chose to crash in an annonymous
Encinitas home. This house belonged to a
notorious redneck who involuntarily forced
the crew into hard labor in exchange for the
supposedly free accomodations. Imagine
Grosso, Blender, Primo, Diane, Lester,
Lucero, Terrance, Roy, Louise and who
else but G.S.D. executing common
yardwork.
Grigley, Schmidt, Nolder, and Chuck
Holty also among the ranks of the home-
less following eviction from a certain fac-
tory. Could it be possible that the lads were
involved in the spray paint on the carpet
episode in a certain sponsor's bedroom?
RUMORS
The new Faction release is touted to be
hot.

nite Cal sojourne.

ble street models,

soon, but hasn't he just scored a new
apartment?

seen in Baja on seven separate trips in the
last five weeks. With airman Natus
Kaupus in tow; stories survive regarding a
secret abandoned airforce base with a
massive pool and banks down south of the
border.
