The C.A.S.L. season had started
again, but this time it did not take on
its typical, uneventful, "Let's get it
out of the way" attitude. Instead the
Upland CAS.L proved to be a
much more interesting and enjoy-
able contest than those previous to
it. Most felt that the reason for its
success was due to the change in
terrain. The contest was held in the
pipe bowl, which is very difficult to
find good lines in, causing some
skaters to complain.
While the 1A, 2A, and 3A skaters
rode well, it wasn't until the spon-
sored skaters rode that the crowd
became enthusiatic; which was due
to some encouragement by the
incredible master of ceremonies
John Lucero
Standouts in the sponsored
division during practice were Don
Pollard, Eric Nash, Chris Robinson,
Gary Sanderson, Eric Jueden, Jeff
Grosso, and especially Rick De-
Montrond. As the skaters took their
runs it seemed as though the only
ones who might be able to beat
"Spidy" would be Eric Jueden, Eric
Nash, or Jeff Grosso, Grosso came
close, as a result of his first run, in
which he did a backside ollie into the
pipe, locking on the rim of the pipe
and making it. He also did high
frontside thrustors in the pipe,
backside airs, and sadverts.
The top spot went to Rick DeMon-
trond, and it was well deserved.
Rick rode the pipe bowl for what it
was, doing hot lay back lipslides,
incredibly fast sweepers out of the
pipe, tail stalls, edge carves, four
foot plus pipe flyouts, and the
highest frontside thrusters in the
pipe all day.
In the sponsored bank slalom,
Dave Crabb picked up a very fast
first place, followed by Grosso
picking up his second, 2nd place of
the day. In third was Dave Duncan,
who is one of the most fearless
skaters on the scene.
This contest seemed to generate
some needed energy and interest in
the C.A.S.L. Series. The pipe bowl
proved good terrain, testing the
creative skills of the skater. Possi
bly, in the future, a Pro contest could
be held in the pipe bowl, which
would test the adaptability of each
skater,
