producer type cat. Paul Mandi,

DR: The Deity of Dials
The AFFLICTED have earned the
reputation, in the SF/Bay Area, of
playing any gig, anytime, any
where. Has this helped or hin-
dered you?
BW: I think that sort of reputation is
true of us because it affirms our
commitment to our music and the
SF Bay Area music scenes, that's
why we do it. We do it because we
love it.
DR: Hay, we're party kind of guys.
FL: We just want to make the
nightclubs move.
Have you played anywhere other
than the Bay Area?
DI: Sure
FL: Nowhere outside of CA.
DR: We cover the Waterfront.
Have you any touring plans in the
near future?

BW: Well, we're going to LA at
end of April, tentatively. We want to
extend that into a national, possibly
world wide tour.
DR: As soon as our manager gets
off the old bum smeggey and gets a
record pressed and books a four.
We are going to get things on the
road.
Do you consider "Summer of
Love" as an anthemn for today's
youth, as "San Francisco" was
for the youth during the late
'60's?
BW: We think "Summer of Love"
reflects the nihilistic society which
left the post hipple era of the Haight-
Ashbury district
Do you feel the opening lyrics,
"Young and white tired of the
disco shave your head and come
to San Francisco," are parallel
with those of "San Francisco," If
you're going to San Francisco be
sure to wear some flowers in
your hair."?
BW: Excellent analogy. I do see a
parallel there. Not to me but I'm sure
there's a parallel to somebody,
somewhere. Checkawoump...
What's a checkawoump?
FL: It's whatever you want it to
mean.
BW: But it only means something if
you know how to skateboard.
FL: It's just another skate word
derived from the roots of other skate
words. It's like when you're in the air
and you forget what you're doing or
what you're supposed to do. But
you don't have to skate to use it.
BW: Checkawoump is the nirvana
we hope to achieve.
DI: Let's pretend I said that, I like it.
Is "Here Come the Cops" based
upon a singular real life incident
or a culmination of events?
DR: It's more a culmination of
events rather than a particular
incident.
BW: It describes the exasperation
with modem day police tactics.
"Here Comes the Cops" happens
everyday. That's life.
FL: It happens in every city with a
population of one cop or more. It
only takes ONE cop to ruin a real
rad cool party.
What is the band afflicted with?
DR: Idealism.
FL: Pain and suffering
BW: We're afflicted with having to
see the truth.
DI: One has skater's foot.
DR: Laryngitis.
FL: I want to use the answer on the
first interview tape that was ripped
off.
Interviewer's note: House was
ripped off three days before
deadline. Old Interview tape
gone.
DR: Let's track down the stolen
interview. I think the whole theft was
just a front to get that tape, because
they were offered big money from
out of town, and release it as a
bootleg album. "The Afflicted at Los
Portales."
Why are you the Afflicted?
DI: No one else will do it.
BW: Somebody's got to be Afflicted.
What are you trying to say?
BW: We're spending our whole lives
trying to say something; we're not
just saying it now. After we're dead,
then people will know what we had
to say. Since we aren't, it won't
make any sense.
DI: Do you know what he's saying?
BW: You can't really tell what
someone has said until they are
finished talking
Do you have any shows coming
DI: Friday, we're playing an equip
ment benefit for Capp Street
Studios...then, two weeks from now
at the Mab, supporting Richard Hell
with Napalm Beach...Friday, April
19th we're playing the Nunz reunion
show at the Mab
What bands, If any have the
Afflicted evolved from or evolved
from the Afflicted?
ALL: Short of Insulation, Live Nude,
Stupid Losers, Home Brew, Urban
Assault, League of Bastards, and
Juvenile Justice
What bands would you like to
play with?
BW: Any cool bands.
FL: Anybody.
BW: We'll play with anyone from
Albert Lee to Zev.
DR: We'd play with Alvin and the
Chipmunks if there's an hors
d'oeuver tray.
DI: We're working on a gig with The
Partridge Family, possibly at a
Shriner's convention.
