Now, it just so happens that on the
particular weekend in question a major
storm blows in and deposits a record
depth, something like 3 ft in 12 hours. After
numerous phone calls to the Highway
Patrol, contest coordinator, Charlie
Barnett and the creator, Mike Chantry,
three things are discovered; CHP says the
highway is closed, Charlie says the contest
is off and Chantry says him and Terry
Kidwell are snowboarding down to the
local 7-11 for provisions. That does it. Now
we're definitely going up, but we'll leave
tomorrow.
Next morning it's Me, Bryce Kanights
and Cornhead piling into the already
loaded down Rabbit for a 7 am departure.
A call to Chantry's hostelry confirms that
the two day event is now one, everybody's
either there or on their way and the
weather is breaking. Let's go.
Well, to make a long story short, it takes
us 8 hours to make what should've been a
3 1/2 hour journey. We got waylayed in
Sacto looking for Cornhead's chains and
then there were snowplow delays all the
way up the mountain. We arrive at Soda

just as the lifts are shut down at 4:30, but
we're still stoked. A quick scan reveals
quite a turnout of competitors and prac-
titioners. There's Chantry coming down
from the snow halfpipe loaded with video
equipment. There's Blackhart, Steve and
Urban finishing up a half day after spending
a wild night stuck in Auburn due to the
gnarly conditions. Andy Coughlan and
some of the Burton Team are all out from
Vermont. Tom Sims and his crew including
Tahoe locals, Kidwell and mini-shredder,
Sean Palmer are on hand. Ken Achenbach
and his brother are down from Calgary.
Joel from Sessions along with fellow San
Joseans Andy Berendson and Ross
McGowan.
Bryce and Cornhead decide on some
night boarding under the lights at Soda
Springs' sister resort, Boreal Ridge, right
down the road. As we adjourn to the
parking lot who comes snowboarding by
but Damian Sanders scamming a rope tow
behind a fishtailing Volkswagan. The kid is
rad and his local status makes him a terror
on the slopes.
After checking the night action at Boreal,
Mike Chantry
Bryce and Com join the rest of a large
audience at Chantry's watching videos of
past action. Highlights included: Kidwell
and the boys shredding the Tahoe City
snowpipe and flicks of Tony Alva spinning
360's down the slopes at Soda. Blackharts
comment: "Now I don't feel so lame."
Contest Day: After the harsh wake up
call clears the Creator's house
(...........m Sorry, lan and Minor Threat
at No. 10 volume) everybody arrives at
Soda for the full days activities. Most of the
competitors head for the slalom course
half way up the mountain while we opt for
chair No. 3 to the top.
A few delays later the slalom is well
under way with Tom Sims dominating the
clock and teamer Terry Kidwell a close
second in the Pro division. Mark Hiengar-
ten and Andy Coughlan follow up with a
3rd and 4th, respectively. In the Juniors
(16 & under) Shaun Palmer ripped first
followed by Brian Johnson, Jason Atwood
and Vito Lo Conte. Women's division saw
Christine Johnson edging out Amy
Roberts.
Meanwhile, elsewhere on the mountain,
Blackhart is doing off the lips down the
ditch-like track created by the snowcat.
Cornhead (Craig Williams, by the way) has
yanked his rear bindings right through his
snowboard while taking a header off the
summit cornice. Imagine your rear truck
falling off during an acid drop into a pool
and you'll get somewhat of an idea how
Corn felt at the time.
Over at the half pipe a heated practice
session was starting to brew. Under a fully
blazing sun the temp was up to Spring
levels while the snow was fresh and soft. A
couple of guys were riding sans shirts, one
even went with shorts on, comfy but harsh
if you fall. All manner of airs, handplants
and lip carves were being showcased back
and forth along the 200 foot long 1/2 pipe.
At one point photographer Bud Fawcett
was showered by a roostertail of snow,
necessitating a dry out session for him and
his gear. Alan Arnbrister was popping
shirtless 360 airs while Tom Sims was
drawing long carving edgers on the almost
vert walls. Crazed Canadian, Ken Achen-
bach was blasting wild style air, but usually
landing outside the pipe. Andy Berenson,
Evan Feen and Ross McGowan were all
looking smooth with laybacks and airs
down the line.
The Pros took two runs each and before
the last roostered flakes settled it looked
like Terry Kidwell had wrapped it up with
Tom Sims right behind him. Ambrister got
burned out of the top 12 while Craig Kelly
took 3rd. Tom Burt pulled up fourth
followed by Andy Berenson (5) and Evan
Feen (6). Juniors division was close but
really no contest for Shaun Palmer's long air
lines and stylish hand grabs. Radical Vito
Lo Conte chased him for second. Watch for
both of these shredders as snowboarding
rages on. Women's 1/2 pipe saw Christine
Johnson again landing a first place.
After a flyaway photo session at the end
of the half pipe it was time to pack it up and
go home, broken boards, sore limbs and
all. We know we'll be back and if you try it
you'll go back too.
Vito Lo Conte, backscratcher.
