DEEP PURPLE-
AT THE COW PALACE
THURS. JAN 31 1985-7:30 PM
I was thirteen when I bought my
first two record albums. They were
Led Zeppelin's 'Houses of the Holy
and "Machine Head" by Deep Pur-
ple. I liked Machine Head best, and
set out to buy as many Deep Purple
albums as I could. I bought "Book of
Talysien used, "Fireball," "Shades
of Deep Purple," "Who Do We Think
We Are?", "Purple Passages,"
"Made in Japan," and one album
that they did with the Royal Philhar-
monic Orchestra. The band was a
god! They played, what was proba-
bly the first "Heavy Metal and not
what a majority of the new "METAL"
bands of today, try to pass off. Hell
much of this new stuff is just a
polished, mutational off-shoot of
hardcore speedrock, which is often
mistaken for Heavy Metal Deep
Purple played hard-edged, progres-
sion-escalation styled tunes, verge
you out to madness, to nervous-
ness, then to an everyday scene.
You realize that it's all one theme
maybe. It was my dream, as a kid, to
see them live. But I, ignorant of the
media, only knew of their existence
through their records. Then, only to
hear of them playing the vicinity.
days after the fact. So, I never got to
see them "Tive."
That was ten years ago, and till
this day I've plopped my favorite
Deep Purple songs in amongst
today's favorite songs on my home-
recorded cassette driving-tapes. To
hear "Highway Star" right after Black
Flag's "Rise Above," or "Rat-Bat-
Blue right before "Another State of
Mind" by Social Distortion,
Then the word was out. Deep Pur-
ple had reformed and were to com-
mence on a world tour and were to
play the "Cow Palace' on Jan. 31. Id
debated dealing with the masses,
and wondered if these guys were
just coming back, with insincerity, to
merely play for reasons of trend. I
opted for going, regardless of the
$13.50 door charge. Hey, "child-
hood dream," you know. As it turns
out, the guys were up there, on the
stage, and they were ripping. They
played every song note-for-note,
better than they ever did, even in my
wildest dreams. They did "Child in
Time," "Space Truckin," "Smoke on
the Water"...but, the great thing
about the whole ordeal is, that they
didn't look pretentious up there on
the stage. They were smiling, and
playing hard. You could see it in their
faces that their hearts were into it. It
had seemed that it was now time for
Deep Purple to come back and play
metal, in a way that makes the
generic stuff of today (rich kids, who
get guitar lessons on Marshalls that
daddy and mummy bought 'em) with
satan, demonesque themes, look-
like high school marching bands.
Long live lan Paice, Jon Lord, lan
Gillan, Roger Glover and the guitar-
god, Ritchie Blackmore.
