Help:
I need help in finding a book on
"Skateboards" how to do tricks, stunts.
what is a "clean 360 turn" etc. Have you
any info in that direction?
Thank you

lan Baby, you're in luck. The trash depo
has come up with quite a collection of
manuals on the skateboarding subject.

The Skateboarders Bible
by Albert Cassorla
1976 Running Press, Philadelphia, PA
204 pages, $4.95
This little puppy almost comes close to
what its title promises. Starts with a fairly
comprehensive history of skating (up to
76) and rolls through the basics of mainte-
nance, safety (using a friend with a whistle
to signal approaching autos while street
skating) and games (basketball, hockey,
and even "jousting" where the object is to
knock the other guy off his board).
This baby doesn't let up either, throw in
a catalogue of then-current skate equip-
ment (average deck length, 27") and a
manufacturers-distributors index (90% of
which no longer exist, interesting to note
which ones do), and you got the complete
picture of skating in the mid-seventies. All
in all the "Bible" is full of info and, at the
least, an interesting and sometimes.
hilarious read. Last, but not lost check the
skateboard glossary of terms includes
"bongo," "road rash," "jam" and "having it
wired."

SKATITECTURE
Skating is where you find it. In this case
a carload of bloody, bloomin, bleedin,
blimey blokes from England, with names
bike Shane Rouse, Danny Webster, Sean
Godd and Gary Lee were on their way
back to merry ole England after the Euro
champs in France. Passing through Calais
(France) our troops happened across a
street skaters dream. It seems that some
enlightened architect had blessed the
Calais customs building with a perfect
three foot transition all the way around.
Even though there was an inch thick lip
that kept them off the vertical brickwork
this able crew of travel weary skators
ripped it up.

This manual is probably the most
outdated of all with a complete breakdown
of loose ball bearing wheel systems and
some other ancient history. But, we had to
check it again to see the shots of Tom
Sims riding in the classic no shirt, no
shoes mode. Last photo in the book is a
classic shot of early Z boy Paul Constan-
tineau (we think) grabbing what could be a

By Pahl Dixon and Peter Dixon
1977 Warner Books, New York
234 pages
A more evolved look at skating in the
later seventies, lots of skate park stuff and
some of early skatographer Warren
Bolster's classic photos. Cool reservoir
act on with Stacy Peralta and the Northern
California Championships, indoors at the
Cow Palace in S.F.
Like the others much of the copy is worn
out, but, actually talks some common
sense language about skating.

SKATERVILLE
Down in that hot bed of suburban skate
activity called San Jose, the raging never
stops. Particularly when there is a "skate
party" going on at the locally renowned
Montague banks. One recent holiday
gathering looked something like this: Two
cars strategically parked with stereos
blasting, barrels of beverage being tapped,
various boy/girl twosomes lip locking in
cars, Kingpins and Faction stickers being
plastered about and at least six skaters
ripping side to side at all times. Minor
casualties: Shutter girl, Barb Fahrney.
getting chopped by Bob Denike's flailing
axe, other than that good times had by all.
One question: Are Craig Ramsay and
Loreen still an item?
Speaking of the Kingpins, they've added
two members, sax and piano... and skates
of course. The Faction have been holding
down semi-regular gigs here in the Bay
Area. Steve ("I play guitar now") Cabal-
lero leaked word of their next tour, slated
for early summer, and says they will swing
through the south first and actually play
Dallas this time.
SKATING TO AND FRO
Ramp ball sessions on Lance's ramp are
getting a bit rambunctious. We don't know
too much about it but it's like soccer only
you play it on a ramp in your socks with a
tennis ball and you slam a lot.
While traveling through a small lowa
town, Paul Dove managed to snap a pic of
Thrasher's Hardware. Paul also sends
along some additions to the "Typical Dip
sayings that were run in Sept. 84:
1. How come it's so big?
2. It looks like a surfboard!
3. How fast can you go?
4. You really shouldn't do that around
here!
IT'S NOT WHAT YOU THINK
Here's a pic dug up from the files that
was sent by John Harms of Eau Claire,
Wisconsin. No, it's not our printer so don't
go hassling him for back issues. It's Dale
Thrasher, proprietor of Thrasher Printing,
Inc. in Brentwood, Missouri near St. Louis.
John flowed Mr. Thrasher an issue and a
sticker and we'll flow John a Tragedy
T-shirt for uncovering this skate coinci-
dence.
YOU'RE OUTTA HERE!
About a dozen skaters, who had recently
taken up residence at Steve Keenan's
Bed and Breakfast Inn, Alhambra, got the
boot from "Big Steve recently. Charged
with "overstaying their welcome" Steve
had to tell 'em all to go home, which won't
be real convenient for some. Four of the
skate nomads, Steen Webster, Bevan
Phillip, Gregor Rankine and Tennis
Chris happen to be on extended leave

from New Zealand. Three or four others,
including Steve Douglas are defecting
from England at the moment. All wore
thankful for the say though.
Gregor Rankine, by the way, has
relocated northward to Cab's house in San
Jose and can be found on the ramp during
most waking hours. Gregor says high to
Lee and the boys in Zealand and says he'll
bring Cab back in a trunk or something.
ART OF SKATING
Every so often we'll uncover an example
of skateboarding being portrayed in the
fine arts and other mediums. We've showed
you Santa Monica Airlines pilot, Skip
Engblom's famous skate furniture. Even
high society arteests like Leroy Nieman
have portrayed the skater in their works.
More recently we received photos of Dave
Lewis' wood cut-out skate art characters.
Dave operates in Seattle, Washington and
is quite active in that scene. Among the
vanous items in his portfolio of skate
related activities is a skate show in a
gallery, Dave installed some of his works
on the walls and built a small halfpipe to
boot. Steve Caballero just happened to be
in town, on tour, and put in some ramp time
as well as played the gig. Great fun had by
all as bands thrashed in the basement
while boards thrashed the ramp upstairs.
Other Seattle skating has a pool coped, 16
wide, ramp in Lynwood with a couple of
local contests to its credit.
Dave closes with "Somehow, just
because I build one puddie jumper skate
ramp, I suddenly become Mr. Ramp or Mr.
Skate Artist, well, as long as I can do
something like build ramps for skaters that
are short on funds or know how, it's worth
to me. Now, if I could only learn to stay on
a skate. You'll get it Dave.
