UNDERGRAND
Ho
Starting off the New Years Eve
weekend on the 29th, with a curfew
show at the Mab, were Tales of Ter-
ror. Living up to their name, the
opening sequence from A
Clockwork Orange flashes before
the eyes. You know, little Alex and
his band of pillagers, marauding the
countryside devastating all in their
path. The singer maintained his
cocky, irreverent tormenting haran-
gue throughout, while entertaining
all with back flips, thrusting pelvis
action, and a twisted grin. The band
followed his lead, goading each
other into outrageous feats of show-
manship: a glant game of chicken.
Watch out for Tales of Ter
ror... They could bring trouble to
your town. The late show the same
evening, featured Three Mouse
Guitars, another band to watch out
for. Their style is comprised of many
influences, each adapted well. The
funky bass riffs continuous with the
"Three Mouche" switching instru
ments intermittently. A tight stylish
band...
...The Afflicted's new demo tape,
recorded at the Automatt, getting
airplay on KQAK, KUSF, KALX. It's
a polished and professional tape,
Also, one cut "Here Come the Cops"
stands out on the newly released
"PEACE' compilation....In Feb.club
Arg. an underground after hours
traveling club, will be running strong,
featuring bands, Libations and Fun
Time... Two shows are scheduled
at the Victoria for Feb. The dates
aren't confirmed, but if they are any
thing like the Slovenly, Ruin, don't
miss them....Rock 'n' roll, ruffian
wrestler types, Hüsker Dü made an
appearance at the I-Beam in S.F.,
wazooing the ear-drums of those
who were fortunate enough to catch
them. Someone said that they unof
Hüsker Dü
to a changeover in the club policy
no more live music...or limited live
at the very least. Now all this may
change in the future, but for now that
leaves Philadelphia with a very li
mited outlet for live music....Then
again, others are now working to re-
medy that fact. The Rock Against
Hunger shows have been doing ex-
tremely well-the C.E. Center show
with Corrosion of Conformity,
American Dream, and Malifice
went smooth as could be-which
means other shows may fake place
there. This is in addition to the Abe's
Steak shows where a lot of the Rock
Against Hunger shows take place
(a really cool steak shop with a back
room for shows-food, music and a
place to hang out...an unbeatable
combination). Some shows in the fu-
ture will feature Gangrene, Iron
Cross, Obsessed and Rat at Rat
R...The group of concerned artists
and promoters who met to discuss
the lagging state of things in
Philadelphia now have become an
entity? They are the Concerned
Arts Coalition, and will hopefully be
sponsoring shows and helping
others to do shows in the not too dis
tant future...as things come to
gether for them they'll be putting out
a newsletter with information and
hope to be available for a reference-
type situation for people who want to
do shows or benefits but don't know
where to begin... Someone else who
is trying to get some things going is
Lee Paris (215) 592-0554, an inde
pendent promoter who works out of
a few different spaces, and also has
a column in the South Street Star, a
major local paper. Contact him if
you're interested in tapping into
some press and possible shows
here in Philly-he's very supportive
of independent stuff (Lee used to be
with the Ripley but left when things
got raunchy with club policy for
bands and entertainment) and also
has a good perspective on things
here in Philly... Now that people
have started to get involved with
doing benefits and shows together
some different bands have been
getting attention: the Morefiends
are great-you never know what to
expect when they take the stage; the
Proles-a politically-inclined rock
band who have been gigging quite a
lot in and around the city: Homo Pic-
nic (featuring members of Kremlin
Korps) which started out as a fun
project and now has blossomed into
a full-scale band. A recent tape of
some of their material was pretty
good...Ruin have just finished as-
saulting the west coast, and the
word from the west was, "Devastat-
ing Chuck (ex-Y DI) may be
forming a new band with Chuck
Treece (ex-McRad)
ficially challenge any band to a tag-
team, no holds barred wresting
match in a locked cage. Hey Prince,
Michael Jackson, Boy George,
Dolly Parton, Stevie Wonder,
Duran Duran...what are you wat
ing for? Here's your chance....Don't
know how they manage, but after
two attends at dying the Drunk In-
juns re-emerged once again for a
Brawl-style gig at the Mab. In atten-
dance were: T.A., Mondo, the
JAK'S team, Y.A.A. girls, Michael-
Tik (from S.J.), Sushi, and several
others, for a show honoring
Michelle's b-day. Highlights in-
cluded eight-to-ten deep dog piles
on singer Joey Headbone, broken
bottles and 993 bruises....Rock
takes a tum for the worse with the
ridiculous appearance of a band of
nerds, the Jerry Lewis Brothers
Experience, complete with white-
sox, slide rulers, high-water flood
slacks and taped together specta-
cles. Agent Orange deranged a
club, the night of "Lance's Lock,
with a hot opening act, Salba's; the
Flamethrowers. The place, Oscar's
Comhusker. Quote of the night from
Oscar, "What about $500 for being
assholes?"
...NEWS FROM PHILADELPHIA
(And other assorted areas)
Bah humbug! First the Eastside
closed, and now the Ripley-barely
open for more than a month or so, is
the next to go. The Ripley Music
Hall, which was received with high
hopes and expectations has proven
to be a false lead for shows in the
city of Philadelphia. Complaints
about loudness (they pulled the plug
on the Replacements when they
played there), lack of a proper sound
check and poor management, along
with a confused notion of what the
club was trying to do, all contributed
and
others. Good things have been
happening for the Sadistic Exploits
who have been playing pretty regu-
larly and may be doing a movie
soundtrack....If you like to know
what's going on, but you're not big
on reading fanzines, perk up your
ears and give a listen to this: Bang
Zoom-a cassette fanzine that fea-
tures music and interviews. Word on
this so far has been really good-a
chance to hear the music as well as
chance to hear the music as well as
the thoughts of different bands. Con-
tact 33 Gold Street, #705, New
York, NY 10038 for information-this
is definitely worth checking
out!!!...Also in New York and worth
checking into is Big City Records,
which has quite a few interesting re-
leases out right now. Contact Big City
for a complete list of both their re-
leases and also a fanzine publication
they have at 2329 Vance Street,
Bronx, NY 10469...If you have video
and you'd like to get some airplay,
contact Real George's Backroom,
P.O. Box 724, Cp, NY 12065 for info
The show features a whole lot of alter-
native music-no Cyndi Lauper-
Styx-Journey rock for these guys!!!
Drop them a line and they'll send you
their specifications...
Metal slashing madness, with the
break-up of Hellhammer Switzer-
land's unrelenting black speed al-
tack, two of the members have re-
formed a new band called Celtic
Frost, whose debut vinyl is sonic
blistering deliverance, the U.S. re-

extra tracks. Watch for it soon!! Mas-

of that fun fest, is Slayer's new lp.

mons in blood thirsty quickness.
Venom's new 12", Manitou, is out,
the B side running rampant, just a
teaser to the upcoming lp. German
metal comes fast and furious in the
forms of Sodom whose Ip will be re-
leased in the States. Destruction.
also to have an ip out in the States,
and Dark Angel who hit with meaty
quickness in the form of Metallica or
Slayer, simply the band to watch for.
Possessed, the Bay Area's lethal
metal speed attack slated to have a
vinyl release on Metalblade. New
Metal Virgins Ip out, an incredible
disc. Corrosion of Conformity
have signed to Metalblade Records,
but under a new label name possi-
bly, this their 2nd release should
explode with turbulent power.
S.N.F.U., the Canadian pow-
erhouse hardcore band have just
finished their visit in LA, where they
recorded an ip's worth of music to be
released on the B. Y.O. label. One of
the hottest LA. bands is Iconoclast
who mix raw power with strong polit-
ical beliefs, this is the band to watch
for. Onslught have recorded an p
with "Children of the Revolution" in
the U.K. This new positive label will
also release the Stupids vinyl who
are similar to D.R.I. Also in the U.K.,
an individual effort by Dig & Kalv will
show a world compilation flexi out
soon, slated to appear on it is Septic
Death, the Stupids, Civil Dissi-
dent, and still yet unnamed bands.
This starts out a series of flexi discs
to feature worldwide bands at low
price. These flexi's will be available
in the U.S.A. also. Sam Hain's now
12 is due out soon, and Poison
Idea is slated to record some new
stuff in the near future. Plus another
new Hüsker Dü release is finished
and out soon. These creative guys
just churn them out....Hey, do your
part for humanity, buy a gun, or any
weapon, and destroy it!
