POSITIVELY SKATING
Welcome to 1985 It's time to wipe the
slate clean and start out new and fresh.
Sure Eve made a few new years resolutions
just like I've always done in the past, but
usually about two weeks into January I can
never remember what they were. Enough
about my problems, how about you? What
are you going to do in 1985 that you didn't
seem to get around to in '84. Shower more
often? Clean those skateshorts? How
about listening to your older sister one day
a week? No way, those aren't any fun, be-
sides your big sis doesn't make any sense
anyway. Let's see, what can we pick up
that will really change your life (and your
skating). How about if I run through a few
things that have helped me in the past,
things that improved my life and in turn im
proved my skating
POSITIVE THINKING
Success or failure in anything I've done has
been directly related to how I was thinking.
What is stronger in your daily life, positive
thoughts or negative ones. If your mind is
usually sitting in a negative groove thats all
that is ever going to come your way, all
kinds of negative. If you continually strive to
think in a positive manner, things that you
attempt (like a new skate move) will come
Post-action. Luis Espinosa has put it to work in the last couple of years.

much easier. Another area where positive
thoughts are essential is dealing with
others, after all you are living with other
people on this earth. Many people jump
right in and rag on people without taking a
moment to check on their own faults. The
best thing you can do is keep an unpre-
judiced, unbiased and open mind when
judging others. This isn't a problem really,
because skaters are the most open minded
people I've come across. So let's see. New
Year's resolution #1: Thinking.
DEALING WITH PROBLEMS-Some-
times it is really hard to think positively
when things just aren't going your way.
Don't get discouraged when you can't
seem to do things right, just let the problem
rest and come back to it later. Most impor-
tantly, don't give up. Usually when I'm deal-
ing with a stressful situation, I'll just sit
back, take a deep breath and relax for a
moment. The restorative powers of a sim-
ple inhale/exhale are tremendous and will
usually calm you down, sort your thinking,
and above all help you relax. Try it some-
time when you're trying a new skate move
and having some difficulties. Therefore,
New Years resolution #2 is: When a prob-
lem arises, stop, relax, try it again.
ONE STEP AT A TIME-The worst thing
something is to bite off more than you can
you can do when trying to accomplish
chew. Start off slow, attempt simple things
first and as your confidence builds, aim for
things more difficult. Devote all your ener-
gies to mastering one thing at a time; don't
scatter your energies. So we come up with
#3: Take things one step at a time.
DEALING WITH FAILURES-All failures
in your life should stir up a sense of deter-
mination. When you fail in something.
analyze why you failed so you can avoid
these problems in the future, then don't
give up. Try it one more time. The best
chance for succeeding in something is right
after you have failed, this is when your
inner drive can be its strongest. Successful
people reject the thought of failure at all
times, while always striving for a positive
attitude. #4 then will be: Never Give up.
SUCCESS-This is probably the hardest
thing I have ever tried to some to terms
with. A lot of skaters I've come across will
say things like "I'm not a very good skater,"
or "I suck as a ramprider etc. Well do they?
Compared to what? Do they have fun when
they skate, whether it be on a huge halfpipe
or a flat sidewalk? If the answer is yes, I
consider them to be good (successful)
skaters. Measure your success on how
happy you are, not how many tricks you
can do. Don't make unhappiness a habit,
rather keep your thoughts positive and
compare your success only with yourself.
Is there a resolution in here somewhere?
How about: Measure your successes with
how happy You are.
So there we have it, five simple ideas we
have loosely fitted into being things to strive
for in the New Year. The big question is do
they really help when applied toward
skateboarding? Sure they do, in fact, they
apply toward anything in your life. Give
them a try, and I'll guarantee a happier new
year. Take care and skate safe.
