THE P.I.L MEDICINE SHOW
SF AND SACRAMENTO STOPS
October 19, 1984
This isn't a critique of the S.F.
show, because like most S.F. rock, I
worked. From 6 p.m. til 12:30 a.m.,
noise resounded within Pier 2, Fort
Mason Complex. The immensity of
the building allowed for the simul
taneous performances and exhibits,
causing a continuous din. Thanks to
Mark Pauline and crew, quite a few
people have raspy voices from try
ing to talk during their performance.
The bands playing were Junk 57,
Rhythm & Noise, and P.I.L. The
audience numbered 3,000 or so:
special exhibits, videos, sculptures
combined with the bands, suc-
ceeded in entertaining a vastly di-
vergent crowd. Due to the compe-
tence and professionalism of the
technicians and security staff, what
I could have become a disastrous
chaotic debacle, was instead the
positive artistic event intended.
October 20, 1984

Sacramento by 1 p.m. Upon arri
val at the Crest Theatre I saw an
honest to goodness Willie Nelson
cowboy squiring his lady downtown
She had on a satin-backed, puce
lace dress, fake mink jacket, 8
heels and beehive hairdo, at 1 p.m.
They gawked at me, with my
skateboard, as I gawked at them.
The Crest Theatre is an old movie
house, red flocked wallpaper, lots of
gilt on the ceiling, rows of theatre
seats, balcony, and small dance
floor. Reminiscent of a defunct Bay
Area nightclub. Opening the show
were The Hot Spit Dancers, who
combine funky riffs with hardcore
energy successfully. The vocals
lacked clarity, due no doubt to being
the first band and P.I.L. sound crew
being unfamiliar with their style. Au-
dience reception was warm; a local
band and the singer skates. Their
short set, followed by a quick set
change, led to the unintroduced
Minutemen, from L.A. I've seen this
3-piece band many times, their
music has grown through the years.
The lyrics are satirically thought pro-
voking. The guitarist has become
comfortable with his physical stage
presence and his intense involve
ment with his instrument. The guy
can move, taunting the immature
fists raised in ignorance (that's what
you do at Van Halen). The crowd
loathed them, chanting "You suck,
go home," throughout most of the
set. A lengthier set change brought
Dirksen frontstage to introduce the
Mutants. Other than a soundman
persisting in cutting off the blonde
slut's vocals, they gave a strong per-
formance in the face of a hostile au-
dience who were expecting TSOL
Members of the band used their
many talents during the short set
The blonde talked dirty and the
brunette showed tit without eliciting
a continuous tide of response from
the disgruntled crowd. Ending the
set by dedicating "New Drug" to
skateboarders who were out there
brought a few more people to their
feet. The new drummer zipped
through the set, but where did he get
that shirt? An intentionally pro-
longed set change motivated ten-
sion: the pit grew, all were ready for
THE PIL
MEDICINE SHOW.
Johnny Rotten, perfect front man
for the polished band he put to-
gether. Aided by the best sound sys-
Tem heard in ages, P.I.L. used all the
components of THE STAGE in con-
junction with ROCK 'N ROLL, mas-
terfully. A new song Trials and Tribu
lations, revealed the twisted inten
sity Johnny hasn't shown in his lyrics
since Bodies, which incidentally he
closed his set with By M. Rebel
Even though the demise of the
Misfits, which brought out the rising
Johnny Rotten
of Sam Hain, Misfits vinyl is still
coming out, due to the outrageous
demand, Word from Plan 9 Central
is, a limited Misfits seven inch box
set, featuring two of the rarest Mis-
fits releases. The set contains The
Static Age-7, Horror Business 7,
Bullet 7 and the never released
Where Eagles Dare 7. This will be a
well sought after collection. Also
plans to release Beware on a 10.
quite possibly on limited white vinyl.
And if you didn't get one of the rare
marbled or white vinly Sam Hain re-
cords, it's soon to be a limited, white
with red splatterings. Collectors
bound to go bananas!! 7 Seconds
having a successful U.S. tour.
stopped in D.C. and recorded some
new tracks for future vinyl with pro-
ducer lan Mackaye. Kevin claims
this is their best stuff yet! Youth
Brigade over in Europe getting
good responses and stuck in Poland
for a few days as their van broke
down. Now they're in the UK. re-
cording some new material when
back home Shawn will be quite busy
with new BYO releases and plan-
ning of Germany's Upright Citizens
Summer U.S. Tour. Word has it over
in D.C. that the new Scream LP is
recorded and waiting to be pressed,
plus a new Minor Threat EP will be
out soon!! Suicidal Tendencies
video now on MTV, Rock America
and others. Will this mean broader
success for S.T.? Plus they just
scrapped their entire studiosessions
for their new demos, unhappy with
the overall results. Toxic Reasons
still over in Europe, have been there
most of the year. They're expected
to be back in the states in early
1985. New English releases out
soon will be a new 7" by Discharge,
a new Varukers 12", English Dogs
12, and Chaos U.K. has reformed
and will have a new brain blistering
LP out soon. A new Angelic Up-
of P.LL
starts LP featuring the legendary
Max Splodge, making this release a
cross between Upstarts and
Splodgeness Abounds. But Max is
reportedly going to reform Splodge-
ness Abounds, so that craziness
will go on!! New compilation albums
out are Pushead's "Cleanse the
Bacteria, featuring lots of music
from international bands, with songs
by 7 Seconds, Septic Death,
Poison Idea, Seige, Instigators,
Civil Dissident, Mob 47, C.O.C.
and many more...a definite must!!
plus out soon, MDC's Peace compl-
lation, double album featuring repor-
tedly over 50 bands from across the
globe...and in the UK, Conflict's
Mortarhate label will be putting out a
3 album compilation of U.K. bands.
Looks like some good music to in-
vest into! Lastly, word has it that the
hottest up and coming record store
for hardcore, and whatever, is
Raunch Records, located at 375
West 400 South, Salt Lake City,
Utah 84101. Bard and Daph are
stocking all the hottest international
releases, plus forming a great mail
order service. Prices are low, and
bands should send their releases to
them, as Raunch has a radio show
also.
Also, rising like a wounded fire-
breathing serpent was The Cinema,
on Markel St. in downtown San
Francisco. Some heavy rockin took
place there with some fine nights
with D.O.A., D.K.'s, Leather Angel,
Crucifucks and Die Kreuzen. Due
to
some unmitigating circum-
stances, the venue has closed its
doors once again till after the first of
the year. Info call Kim Robinson
(415) 552-6688.
Decrys 19A.D.4 Tour is raging on-
ward. So far, they've been covering
the Midwest and working their way
on from there. For DECRY TOUR
