DIEHARDS
11:15 Time to head out to "The Chasm" and check out the slam
session. Slam is the ultra hardcore section of the skate populace, the
absolute most die-hard of us, the epitome of the go-for-it-and-possibly-
die attitude. I myself do not belong to this group. I skate, sure, but, I
do other things too. You'll see shortly why I'm not with them.
Maria and I lugged the cooler out of the Land Shark and strapped
ourselves in. She fixed it up, and eased into first. With a lurch and a
whine we were on our way. First stop was Gordies, he'd session with
me at The Chasm later, after the slam session. Maria screeched to a
halt and laid on the hom. Gordie somersaulted through the back door
and flipped to his feet, pitching his skate bag through the back
window. "You going yet,Gordie," I casually asked, trying to see his
eyes behind the dark shades. Nah, but I will be by the time we skate."
he replied, digging some lumps of banana from under his nails.
Gordie's a good dude but a little farther up in the stratosphere than
most. He enjoys sessioning while hallucinatory. How he concentrates
is beyond me, but he claims it's second only to sex, and he often
orgasms during frontside airs,
On the highway, Maria opened up the blown V-6 the whistle of the
supercharger turning to a biting whine that perfectly complemented
the hypersonic tunes spewing from Gordie's box. Kicking back, I
cranked open the sun roof and lit my first cigarette. Today we would
witness some of the most bio and absurd skating known to man, and
there would be blood. No, I'm not one of them, you'll see why.
Halfway there I had to pump a few rounds into a furry black lump
that attached itself to our fender. Tenacious bastards, we were going
85 when it hit us. Things aren't what they used to be.
We were lucky-got good seats for the slam jam. The crowd was
swelling, and already a few slammers were flying up and down the
Chasm. The Chasm is a ditch, you see, of unequaled radness. The
main section is just over eight feet high, with 8 feet of flat and roughly
50 feet long. It doesn't quite reach vertical, and has the smoothest
surface. The far end, where it widens into a capsule end has a rough
drain grate at the bottom and 2 feet of vertical. The cement is crumbl-
ing a bit, and it's here where most of the water of life will splash. The
other end, going uphill gradually fades into smaller banked walls till "
it levels off.
Describing all the action is impossible, so I'll limit it to a few
highlights. Slam 1, a big boned fellow from the western province,
wowed the crowd with backside airs to fakies, he'd blast off and
contort 360° in mid air to come down backwards. Truly impressive till
a seemingly clean 4 footer hung up. He flew backwards and straight
down, as if dropped from a plane, catching himself with a stiff arm
that snapped with a crack that echoed down the Chasm. He bounced a
few times, and has yet to regain consciousness.
Slam A5, a bad mouthed farmer from Aggro-City was backside
boning so cleanly I almost cried. Slam 6 provided the gnarliest
spectacle. You don't often see 4% foot lein airs. On his third flight his
re-entry killed him His gloves snagged on his too-long bolts, at least
that's what is thought, his balance was off, and leaning too far in be
didn't let go of his board, which tilted forward and trapped his arm,
flinging him around like a judo throw. He cartwheeled once and his
skull clanged off the grate, his body landing in a limp pile. When they
