THE RAMP PAGE
Ramp Accessories.
More and more ramps are built everyday. Ramps are the
predominant factor in the progression of vertical skateboarding
today. Some skaters spend all their time and resources making
their ramp the best in town, others may spend little time and
money and create just as functional a structure. Still others may
expend a fortune and their ramps are rarely skated because they
are of bogus design..
Any other skater who spends a good part of his or her life
building and skating ramps has probably thought of a number of
ways to improve on the basic skate ramp structure. For instance:
some build the bio rollout deck area with full railing, banner
space, etc. Others will make a small clubhouse, tool shed, or
similar enclosure behind their ramp. Many prefer to alter the
rideability of the ramp itself with various extensions, channels
and even lipslide areas.
Let us look into some possibilities existing for general expan-
sion on the basic ramp idea. Starting with the rollout deck, there
are dozens of things that can be built or done to expand its use.
A good rollout deck should stretch four to eight feet back from
the lip, be very well supported, and provide those waiting to drop
in room enough to stay out of the way of those skating Rollout
decks can be shaded with old plywood or canvas canopies. On
the deck one might include: couches, lounge chairs, ashtrays,
astroturf or outdoor carpet, electric fans, bedroom-to-ramp roll-in
planks, photographers' trapdoors for low-profile shots, and
stairways providing access up the back and sides of the ramp.
The ramp itself may have tombstones, canyons, deathboxes,
plexiglass sections, curved sections; even removeable, inter-
changeable sections or coping. Around the structure one may
provide stands for spectators, benches, tables, garbage cans.

launches, retractable covers for wet weather, built-in stereo
system with speakers in each of the corners of the ramp, judge's
stands, kneepad drying racks, spare lumber area, hanging
flourescent lights, a ramp rules poster, equipment lockers, etc.
Under the rollout deck many ramp owners have built
clubhouses or storage areas. Some of these clubhouses might
include a cooler, chairs, tables, magazine racks, beds, first aid
station, telephone, plumbing for a wet bar, sink, shower, out-
houses, full electrical wiring for a closed-circuit television screen,
a refrigerator, or a band practice room, etc.
The storage area may consist of a broom or squeegy closet,
fool bench, spare parts or hardware bin, industrial blower for
dust and moisture, duct tape, rack of tools, spare paint cans,
nails, screws, and any other constructive/maintenance mate-
rials.
The idea is to expand on the basic structure and create the
ultimate, full blown superstructure, a temple to the skategods.
Use all available resources and get the most out of your ramp.
