ition you'll be able to comfortably shift your
weight and utilize it to project yourself up the
ramp. Notice that I said your weight must be cen-
tered over your board, because as you begin to
get higher on the ramp your body oftentimes
won't actually be over your deck, but from a
physics viewpoint, your weight will be.
You're now ready to do some successful
fakies. Step up on the ramp, take a few pushes
backward up the transition, push off smoothly,
hop up into the knees bent position I've de-
scribed and roll across the ramp up the transition
you started on. Don't worry too much about get-
ting any higher right now, just concentrate on
doing some smooth and clean fakies until you
feel comfortable with rolling backwards. Also try
and learn to look back behind yourself so you
can see when you're going to hit the transition.
Don't move on until you have fakies dialed.
Once that is mastered, you're ready for the
next step which is to start increasing your height
up the ramp with each fakie. In order to do this,
you have to sort of "Push" your deck with your
feet, legs, and hips at the peak point of each
fakie. You can learn to "push" your board by
standing on your deck on some flat ground and
sort of nudge it forward and back. This may
seem awkward at first, but just nudge your deck
along the ground by thrusting with your legs,
feet, and hips. This little thrust is exactly what
you want to do on the ramp at the peak point of
your fakies. Go give it a try. Push off, roll up the
transition and just as you change direction give
your board a little "push." Roll backwards, across
the ramp, up the transition and "push." This
"pushing" will be accomplished by slightly thrust-
ing your weight up the transition, slowly getting
higher and higher.
After a while, with a little trial and error also,
you'll be winging across the ramp doing smooth
fakies with no problem. At this point you are
ready for the next step of mixing in some
kickturns while at the same time maintaining or
increasing the height you're reaching on the
ramp. Now don't freak out at this point. Usually a
beginner will have some good fakie action going
with bent knees and a relaxed body when all of a
sudden, when the kickturns begin, the body
tenses up and the legs go straight as a 2 x 4.
You'll want to keep your knees bent slightly, body
relaxed, arms out in front. Roll up the transition,
lift the front wheels off, pivot the board and body
around, put your weight back on the nose and
roll down. One fluid motion. Roll up, lift nose,
pivot board and body, nose down, roll across! It's
that simple. If you have trouble completing your
kickturns, do them on flat cement or an inclined
driveway until you have the mechanics dialed.
You'll probably find that you'll fakie nice and high,
begin your kickturns and slowly lose all your
speed. That's ok. Do this for awhile until you can
get in about 3 or 4 progressive kickturns.
Now once this point is reached, you're ready
for the final step. Do a few fakies back across the
ramp and on your next kickturn thrust your board
up the transition just like you thrusted when
doing your fakies. That's all you have to do,
thrust up the transition, kickturn and roll down.
Do your thrusting again with your feet, legs, and
hips by slightly compressing and straightening
your legs right at the transition. You'll soon
realize that you can also thrust down as well as
up the transition while rolling through this part of
the wall. With that, you've got all you need.
Wait a minute, somehow you're lost. Well don't
get frustrated, I never intended this article to be a
gyrating a ramp in 1 easy lesson" type of thing.
Just read what I've written, look at other skaters
who know how to gyrate kickturns and fakies and
take note on what I'm trying to put across. The
main thing you must realize is no matter how bad
you want to do that bionic move, you'll have to
nail down the basics first in order to get there.
Once you do, the sky is the limit. Take care and
skate safe.
