Not a bum, just hungry
With Chef-Boy-Am-I-Hungry
It was the day after the Capitola
Streetstyle contest, and I decided to
hang around so I could try and get to
know a girl who kept saying, "Sushi!" I
was Intrigued, plus she skates. So, I'm
hanging around this health-food mecca
out at the beach, after some lengthy
swims about 60 yards off shore while
sipping on a red, white and blue cold
one. So I'm thinking "This is really livin'!
Great. Paradise, blah, blah, etc."
Later I go skating (which I seem to
rarely get a chance to do) at this cool,
private spot and, "Wham!" a slammo on
the old wrist. "This is livin'? Great
Paradise?" Now it hurts to write. So, this
month I've enlisted the help of guest
chefs, Billy Runaway, and Cornhead.
Billy is going to give a few helpful tips
on fast food junk establishments and
Cornhead will offer a few enlightening
words about vitamin C.
CORPORATION INDIGESTION
By Billy Runaway
As the good chef has mentioned in previ-
ous articles, fast food joints are as valuable
to your body as square wheels are to a
board, so, avoiding them is a key to stay-

ing alive until you die. OK? On occasions
you might find yourself traveling with less
enlightened individuals who prefer a chunk
of dead, greasy animal to something edi-
ble. When this is the case, and there is no
other way out except to follow the crowd
into a burger sleaze nightmare, here's a
few tips on how to escape with your life by
eating sensibly.
First let's take a look at the main course.
See that extra double flame grilled super-
burger glistening with junk up on the
board? Well, look past that, if you're going
to get out of this place alive. Try a veggie
burger, which is a standard bun, minus the
meat, but foll of lettuce, tomatoes, pickles,
cheese, etc. Better yet if you have the luck
to land in a place like Wendy's or Carl's,
head straight for the salad bar these estab-
lishments have, and stuff yourself. This
alone could probably supply you with
enough energy to finish a day of session-
ing.
candy, etc. (i.e. sugar). This latter type of
carbohydrate will, in fact, give you energy.
the bad news is by the time you put your
pads back on simple carbohydrate energy
is gone and then you experience a let
down. Complex carbos keep your energy
going for a long time, hence more skate ac-
tion is achieved. Throw in some milk with
your meal instead of coke and you're on the
way to eating better already. Just stay
away from the dead cows and sugar, OK?
Utilize these few simple tips for eating in
a fast food type joint and you'll be feeling
better and skating longer in no time.
Guaranteed.
If you're at the Colonel's, try some corn,
baked beans, milk and salad. There's
enough energy sustaining complex car-
bohydrates in that meal to keep you grind-
ing for a long while. What are those, you
ask? Well, complex carbohydrates come
from food such as grains, potatoes, vegeta-
bles, fruit, pasta, etc., whereas your simple
carbohydrates are comprised of coke,
AND NOW A WORD ON VITAMIN C
By Cornhead
Foods today are so over-refined and al-
tered, some don't even look like what
they're supposed to be once they're pro-
cessed. The foods that have remained the
same, take fruits and vegetables for exam-
ple, are, very simple foods. When we say
simple, that just means your body can
break down and digest these simple foods
easier than say, an over-refined food, i.e.,
Twinkies.
Hows about it, are you eating enough
fruits? Fresh fruits are very high in vitamin
C and fiber. Most of you could likely use
more vitamin C in your diets. Unless you're
eating several pieces of fresh fruit a day, I'd
recommend you take a vitamin C supple-
ment. Vitamin C is non-toxic and safe in
any given amount, it's a water soluble vita-
min, which means it leaves the body within
3 hours or so from when it was taken. Be-
cause of this, vitamin C should be taken at
least twice a day. In stressful situations,
vitamin C is used up quickly and should be
taken even more often.
Good sources of vitamin C can be found
in fresh citrus fruits, fresh vegetables and
other fruits. A lot of you might be drinking
frozen concentrated OJ in the morning and
thinking that the juice is supplying you with
enough vitamin C. When frozen concen-
trated juices are made, they go through a
process that ends up killing all the vitamin
values. In order to keep that frozen juice
high in vitamin C, some companies fortify
the juice with added vitamin C.
Fresh juices are the only ones which
contain all remaining original vitamins.
If you maintain a high input of vitamin C
during the winter, the odds of your catching
a cold are greatly reduced, it's very impor-
tant that you keep vitamin C flowing
through your body. Vitamin C is necessary
in maintaining proper growth and health.
Vitamin C helps repair bruises and dam-
aged skin, as well as helps burns recover
quickly. Signs of vitamin C deficiency in-
clude general weakness, bleeding gums,
swollen joints, slow healing wounds, im-
paired digestion and shortness of breath.
Think of it this way. Equate vitamin C
with the oil that you use in your car. If you
forget to keep the oil scene up in the old
auto, it's gonna choke and croak.
If vitamin C is so important why aren't
you getting more of it? You don't even have
to go out of your way to get vitamin C.
Munch on some fruits and take a vitamin C
supplement for insurance. It's that easy.
