RIPPIN' DISCIPLES
Howz it goin? Your mag puts all
other zines to shame. I live in Val-
lejo, California, the skate scene here
sucks! there's nothin' but shitty
streets and nothing vertical at all.
I've been skating since I was eight.
Up until 2 years ago Petaluma had a
park. (Empire Skatepark) now that's
gone. I'm 15 now and I'm sick of this
shit. I want something to rip on.
Have any places that you know of
round here?
P.S. Is there something wrong
with being a surfer and a skater, I rip
on both water and street. I thrash
whether on my G&S Billy Ruff or my
G&S Shredder.
Also is there something wrong
with being hard core and not always
listening to head bangin' music. I go
both ways; punk and metal.

SKARFER
I really enjoy the Skarfing Material
section. When I first saw it, I didn't
think much of it, but then I started
reading it and found some good
meal tips and recipes. The recipes
are good and I'm glad to see that th
food in this section isn't focused to-
wards junk food. So, keep sending
the mag and the recipes.
THEY'LL LEARN
Jason Haddad
The skating scene here is growing
but there are a lot of kids that buy
boards and don't even know how to
skate. Chope and I are the skaters of
Waldwick, N.J. Real skaters.
Your skating friend,
COOL LAW SAYS
LAW UNCOOL
Larry Scozelly

The other day my brother was
skating in the street downtown and a
cop stopped him I went over to see
what was going on, and instead of
bitching at my brother, the cop was
being very nice. He told us that the
law against skating on the street or
sidewalks in our town was stupid
and he told us we were cool and he
doesn't hate punkers. Some cops
can be really cool, just give them a
chance.

SANITONIO
Hey down here in San Antonio the
skate scene is ¼-ass, everybody
wants to skate my ramp (16 ft x 10,
12 ft flat) and for a while everyone
did, now its gnarly with holes and
broken 2x4 on the flat, oh it's skate
able but definitely thrashed and
everyone said it has become stale
now.
Pretty soon I have a few more
layers affixed 2x4's and maybe plat
forms, but all this will be done with
me and 2 or 3 other skaters, out of
the other 25. They are all cool per-
sons but I'd wish everyone down
here was serious and built a way hot
ramp, and then other ramps.
When the ramp is repaired they'll
be around again, maybe I'll let them
skate once in a while because
there's nothing like a hot session.
Maybe this letter will work if it's
printed, if not it's cool.
REAL COOL
I Just Wanna Skate,

The skate scene here (Waldwick,
ago there were only two kids with
boards and now everyone has a
board. There are still only a couple
of real skaters. Most kids just buy
em to be cool. We have a school
with a good bank and great curbs to
hope to build a ramp soon. Keep up
grind that we ride everyday. We
the good work, your mag is great.

BETTY ON BOTH SIDES
In many previous issues of
Thrasher, I have noticed a lot of
space in mail drop, devoted to the
rivalry between hardcore and heavy
metal fans.
I have been subjected to my share
of both, and see qualities of each.
They both are exceptionally decent
Why don't readers wise up and com-
prehend that people are entitled to
their own opinion of music? Should
one be put down for what they like?
No! People should be encouraged to
express individuality.
So let 'em listen to what they like,
not the expectations of others.
Many thanks to Thrasher for
showing both sides of this issue, and
not being opinionated.

Mullen would be appreciated im-
mensely.
SKATE WOES
My bearings are dead. Get-a-way
is closed. "The Ditch" is wet, our half
pipe is taken apart. Our kick ramp is
a
piece of trash. The dead pigeons
are back, and my JFA tape is
screwed up. But I'll keep skating!
Your truly.

again!
NIGHTMARE
This is dedicated to my in-
fluencers, the people who write to
Thrasher. I don't need people telling
me to cool out on the P.R./heavy
metal war. To be truthful I can't
stand heavy metal. Why? you ask. I
work in a warehouse fixing vibrators
and the bosses' son comes in at the
same time I do and for 8 hours it's
nothing but a bellowing obnoxious
long-haired spandex queen spew
ing out high pitched hormone kept
screams. Yes, 8 hours of this crap
and you ask me why I don't like
heavy metal.

ONLY ONE
Six years ago, I moved from the
East Coast, suburban D.C., to
nowhere, Rolla, Missouri. Back in
77 and 78 I hit the ramps (home-
made) all the time, it was big then.
When we moved everything was
and chewing skoal is big time out
zapped up and away. Pickup trucks
here (spare me). Talk about rough
transitions.
Well, this summer I stayed with
my cousins in Maui, H. and Wood-
land Hills, CA for a while. Ocean,
surfing and basic up-beatness hit
home with me. When I got to Mis-
souri I ordered a board and hit the
streets. No ramps here, in fact, in the
past long six years, I've yet to see
another skateboard.
Mainly, I wanted to show that
deep in the cracks and crevasses of
our country there are skateboard en-
thusiasts perhaps I'm between a
softcore and hardcore local. It's hard
when you're the only one in the city
who knows anything about
skateboards. No one understands
(esp. the cops! dammit). At least I
know I'm the best around.
WHERE IS THE
RIPPER, NOW?
LAME BUT LIKED
Keep skating.
Katy Marchello
Rolla, MO
When I read what "The Ripper"
wrote in your mag I had to write in
He is so lame, it's pathetic, I'm glad
Adam Bomb set him straight. It
doesn't matter what kind of music
you listen to, as long as you skate.I
have been skating for a large portion
of my life, and when I first starting
skating I didn't even know what
hard-core was, I liked Zeppelin,
Kiss, the Doors, and Zappa and i
never heard of Suicidal Tendencies,
Faction or J.F.A., but I skated any-
way. But for the last 2 years I've
turned over completely to hardcore.
But I still don't cut anyone down for
liking metal. I liked the guy who said
that BMX was No. 1 and Duran
Duran ruled. He was really lame,
lamer than "Ripper, and that's
pretty lame.
Thanx for printing this.
Skate hard or ride a bike and lis-
ten to Duran Duran.
Now if we can just work out the skate
vs. BMX riff we can move on to world
peace and the question of life. T-ed.
AND JIMI'S DEAD
Your mag rules. It's the only way
we can get our equip. in Colorado
Springs. The skating here is kind of
down. Me and 3 other friends are the
only ones that skate in a school of
800. We have one thrashed pool
that's far away.
The punks vs. heavy metallers is
lame. Both of these kinds of music
are only okay. The real kind of music
is Van Halen, Scorpions and Jimi
Hendrix. All of these dudes drink,
and do drugs. Their kind of music
isn't pop or new rock, this kind of
music is rock 'n' roll. The only way to
skate is hard rock 'n' roll.

you never see Colorado Springs

LEGAL LUMBER
I just found out a rad way to get
good wood pretty cheap, without
breaking no laws, ye, legally. Me
and my friend are building a cool h-
pipe so we bought some used wood
at a salvage place, it saved us quite
a few frogskins. Our ramp is going
slow cuz my friend has a busted
wrist, but besides that its rad. The
skate scene sucks cuz everyone's
either a stoner or a goody two shoe
prep.

HERE WE GO AGAIN
It's obvious by now that
skateboarding is growing once
again, and I'm wondering if it's for
better or worse. I mean, what was
wrong with skating around the time
when Thrasher came into exis
tence?...nothing!! Skaterz were rip-
ping more than ever, ramps were
being built, and we all realized the
values of both unity amongst our-
selves and of alternative terrains.
We were having a blast. We didn't
need more than that and we still
don't
Some growth is good, of course,
but now that skating is on an "Up-
swing" again, pages that could have
rad pictures or stories on them are
being wasted on bullshit, quick buck
manufacturers. It's a waste of
time...and paper!
Wait and see, when skateboard-
ing drops again these asses are
gonna cop-out due to the no cash
mash, leaving nothing in their
shadows except bunk equipment.
Like it has already been said, "Stick
with the manufacturers that stick
with you," and no one will suffer, and
don't cry when Thrasher is the only
skateboarding magazine left...cuz
Thrasher was, is, and always will be
the only, real skateboarding
magazine anyway.
