MUSIC APPRECIATION
Lesson One:
Listen up kiddo's, it wasn't by ac-
cident that while on a secret infiltra-
tion assignment in the womb of
Dogtown, that our own Photo
Editor, disguised as a surf-guerrilla,
and tutor Skip Engblom attended
the Social Distortion/Mentors/D.I.
gig at the too-hop-to-hip. Music
Machine. Although they accidentally
only stayed for the Mentors set, the
secret-agent-types left a definite
amount of calling cards in more than
a few discreet places. Mr. Engblom
took an immediate liking to the
executioner-hooded Mentors. He
says they reminded him of all the
wrestlers that used to hang around
his house when he was a kid. Final
comment: the Mentors are
slimy NARD ROCKERS, Agres-
sion have temporarily receded from
the stage lights. Don't fret fans,
they be back sooner than you
think, and with a new line up too. Big
Bob says that there will be two new
guitarists (old guitarist now gone),
and a bigger sound.... SKATE
ROCK VOL. 2 is selling wildly ac-
cording to Rough Trade, our dis-
tributor. It seems we can't keep
enough in stock.... Latest name
change for Brian Bannon of J.F.A.,
"Lloyd Mongo!".... Black Flag re-
cently hit the Stone in S.F. for a stint
with Saccharine Trust and Chuck
Dukowski's new band, October
Faction. Saccharine Trust blazed
strange and unnerving swirls of
noise, while the singer read from the
bible (don't ask). Black Flag were
good, but not as tight as last remem-
bered. 'Slip it in is the new 'big-fave
song in their set. It seemed as if

by his gazing glares towards the
crowd as his long brown hair swirled

about from the blast of the amps.
Even a long-haired metal punk
joined in and tried to sing along. Dif-
ferent than in the past, but still one of
the best. Bring your beads and
check them out....and what about
this? The likes of Steve Olson
(bass) have been recently jamming,
slamming and generally playing
much too loud with a S.F. 'speed
metal band featuring Eddy 'Let's
Fight Jennings (guitar/hair) and
Matt Let's do the lunch thing!"
Etheridge (drums). Although nar-
rowly surviving but a few practices,
everything is progressing rapidly,
and live shows, recording, tours,
and fatalistic break-up are promised
to be just around the corner. from

ing "Screaming Lord Salba' (lead

Edward The Monster Best

out some of the flashiest, trashiest
hardcore Rock & Roll this side of
Mick & Keef. The 'Throwers have
been playin' around town alot lately,
opening for Rank N' File at Club
Lingerie and Agent Orange at the
Music Machine. Their sound is a
witch's cauldron of influences, in-
cluding da-blues, R & B, 70's glitter
& glam rock and 77 style punk

Throwers say, "We want to melt
your soul.... Up in the northwest,
some heavy ferocity will soon attack
the brain waves. Poison Idea has
just finished recording some new
tracks which will appear on another
self-produced 12", plus three cuts
will go to Pushead's Cleanse the
Bacteria compilation album, out
real soon. The new Poison Idea
material is strong and effortlessly in-
tense, and shows a vigorous prog-
ression in their approach. Up in the
Seattle area The Accused have
added ex-Fartz front man Blaine to
the vocal duties and boosted up
their sound with a grinding metallic
flavor. New recording sessions
show that their style has favorably
changed, going under a "Splatter
Rock label. Down in Portland,
rapidly rising with their intense as-
sault of crucial mayhem, Final

LA's own Youth Brigade are on
tour, already across the United
States and Canada, then entering
the first stage of their European in-
vasion, with dates in England, Ger-
many, Holland, Italy, Poland and
more. But the tour did start off on a
bad leg with trouble in 7 Seconds
home town of Reno. If travelling
through Reno, beware! As three
members of the Youth Brigade en-
tourage were arrested and jailed for
12 hours for (get this) crossing in a
side walk, pulled out of a casino on
their way to get a bite to eat, and not
told of their crimes. The 3 were vic-
tims to a new series of Reno
sweeps. Also victim to this harass-
ment was Chris Doherty of Gang
Green/Jerry's Kids fame, who was
on the tour with Strangle Hold. 10.
o'clock in the morning, Chris was ar-
rested for walking out of a casino
with a skateboard. He spent 3 days
in a Reno jail with unfair charges.
Again Harassment!.... The tour to
watch for is, 7 Seconds with their
new BYO released LP, Kevin and
the boys will bring their positive sing-
alongs to the voices of America.
Also on tour will be the Offenders,
whose sonic barrage is not one to
miss, and talk of yet another Dead
Kennedy's tour, with Jello planning
on stops in Alaska and even Boise,
Idaho. The scenes will get a well de-
served treat. SSD are making plans
to travel west with their new refined
power sound, as the action still con-
tinues with their abundant energy.
Watch for SSD's new LP How We
Rock.... Suicidal Tendencies are
making plans to record a new LP.
after debuting their new guitarist (is

new platter, and possibly a video.
Suicidal Tendencies getting major
exposure on The Cutting Edge prog-
ram featured on MTV, where
Michael Muir talked of green's and
other informative subjects. Those
speed slices of metallic fury were
raging rampantly recently at the
Eastern Front show. Slayer domi-
nated with their quick lightning as-
saults of iron power, as the crowd
went absolutely berzerk, with mas
sive thrashing and hectic stage
leaps. Slayer continued their domi-
nation as the fastest metal band,
don't miss this act or their new 12"

ing barnstormer, another fine perfor-
mance. Also those blood festered

havoc they love to dish out. Watch

Raw Power from Italy, who played
Philadelphia not too long ago (and
really RIPPED) are now trying to set
up a tour with the aid of Christian
(215) 662-1739 and Lenny (609)
931-7828 (of Murgatroyd Produc-
tions). They have an itinerary plan-
ned-the tour should run from
November 1, 1984 through to March
1, 1985. It will start from Philadel
phia and move up the north coast to
Canada, then circle round through to
the west coast, down towards the
south, and then wind their way back
up the north again. They UR-
GENTLY would like help with people
setting up shows and also hook up a
van for them (either they can drive it,
or rent it to the band). The band is
top notch, and worth seeing. Con-
tact Christian and/or Lenny if you
have anything you can contribute to
the tour plans....On a more local
front, the Dead Milkmen have de-
cided not to release the third tape.
they were planning. Instead they are
going to take the material and see
about the possibility of working it into
a vinyl project. They are also cur-
rently setting up a mini-tour of the
East Coast (be on the look-
out!)....The Sadistic Exploits
have a new drummer. They're also
planning on hitting the studio to do
some recording and hopefully be re-
leasing vinyl. In the meantime, they
have cut a featured SCREAM re-
lease (Sampler Containing Really
Exciting American Music) on
Thirsty Air Productions out of New
York.... Some new bands have
popped up and are really generating
interest: be on the lookout for a band
called Psychotic Norman, another
one called Homo Picnic (featuring
some ex-members of Kremlin
Korps), who recently did a tour of
Chicago, and a band called Mad
Dog who are rumoured to play the
meanest music around and feature
a cross picking of members from
several top-notch area bands....
Y Di are playing a game of musical
members: they now have a new
drummer in the band-Wayne
Paupst (ex-Little Gentlemen), and
are unsure about the bass situation
yet again.... Butcher Brothers are

new bounds by the new surge of
speed metal. Watch for Switzer-
land's Hell Hammer, with their
brand of maniac metal tumbling cha-
otic thrash. Intense. Bulldozer, from
Italy, are a potent Venom sound-

with. Find their 7. And Atomkraft
from the U.K. delivering some tar
nishing aggression. Plus the grow
ing of the metal hardcore bands in
Japan, this could be the current rage
as metalers and thrashers come to-
gether with outrageous riffs.... In
the Metal circles, the talk still goes
on about Megadeath, rumored to be
the crazed man's version of thunder-1
ing speed and force fed power. A
band whose reputation is wide and
curiosity abounds to hear that blis-
tering sonic sound.... NEWS FROM

blend of several styles, an urban
reggae with a nod to ska oriented
styles; this combination has won
them an enthusiastic follow-
ing.... There's a new hall in New
Jersey that is doing shows called
New York South. A lot of the shows
have been all-ages shows done in
evenings and matinees. More about
them to follow.... Reptile House
from Baltimore are setting up a mini-
tour with Samhain (the new Mis-
fits). They are currently breaking in
a new guitarist. Word is out that
