RASIE
"The sky is blue, 1 touched her
eyelashes and she made me the Sicilian
garlic supremo." Yup, the life of a guy who
writes about food. I've received one or two
letters from "junk food junkies" across the
nation, to the effect of how much they think
this column sucks. A) I've noticed a lack of
"J.F.J.'s coming up and saying it to my face,
and B) does this mean you're anti-food? A
wise old Nordic man once told me, "If you
don't eat, you don't do No. 2. If you don't
do No. 2, you'll die!"
Not very many of my letters are very ex-
treme. I've received several letters from
skaters moms and grandmums who hail
this column. They rejoice in the fact that
their little skatepuppies and skatedoggies
are beginning, to spend more time in the
kitchen, making their own meals instead of
hanging out in front of the 7- 11 or Captain
Convenience stores. Sometimes I even re-
ceive recipes. Here's one sent in by Matt
Arluck of San Jose, Calif. Just another one
of those exotic improvised gems that you
can whip up on an "inclinized" impulse.
You'll need these vital ingredients: 12-
ounce can of chile con carne, 1 raw ham-
burger patty, and 1 container of leftover
noodles (any type is fine).
First off, start heating the chile, which
should have directions on the can. Put a
slab of butter in a med. skillet or pan, add
the burger and cook to liking. Chop burger
into small chunks and blend in chile. Warm
up the noodles in a pot over medium heat.
Be sure to add a little water so the noodles
won't dry out. When done, add to burger/
chile mixture-voila! You've got your...
uh... uh, well, just make up a game!
BULK FOOD BINS
Did you know that those bins in the groc-
ery stores, from where you've been stealin'
handfuls of sunflower seed kernels, chunks
of chocolate, jelly beans, peanuts and
candy for all these years, are really inex-
pensive food sources. Bulk food bins con-
tain about twenty pounds each of selected
food items.
There's usually a large variety of bulk
foods, including snack foods, chips, candy,
certain grains, assorted drink mixes, mixed
nuts and trail mixes.
All of you must have realized by now that
when you're buying food, it's the expensive
packaging that is keeping the prices so
high. The way it is these days, I spend way
too much money on food each month any-
way, so I don't need no fancy boxes. You
hear what I'm saying? So, one good way
to avoid high-cost packaging is to go the
bulk food route.
Trail mixes are a great snack food idea.
Normally, trail mixes consist of several
kinds of nuts which provide essential pro-
teins and fats, dried fruits and raisins, which
are great all-around foods. A lot of trail
mixes I buy seem to have these funny look-
ing turd things. I'm still not positive what's
in these turds anyway, but my sometimes
accurate sources tell me that they're made
from refined sugar. The only use I get out
of these turd things is throwing them at
people I don't like. (They're called dates,
Ace ouch! Ed) Trail mixes provide
complete proteins which make them ideal
for any meal.
As I mentioned earlier in this section, a
lot of the bulk food bins are filled with sugar-
loaded goodies in the form of carob- co-
vered, chocolate-covered and even yogurt-
covered nutts and/or what have you. Most
bulk bins have the ingredients labeled
somewhere. Read them all, and if sugar's
the first ingredient, or even close to first,
avoid this munchie if you know what's good
for you. (You're getting too cliché there,
chef!-Ed)
A few questions have been raised by
health officials concerning the bulk bins.
Certain people feel it's unsafe or uncleant
to buy from an open container like a bulk
bin. Also, there's the "pig-type person" prob-
lem, i.e., one who'll do the hand-to-mouth
thing right over the open bin. I say, "B.F.D."
Regardless of the clean factor, bulk bins
have proved to be a low-cost source of
highly nutritious skarf. What, we'll stop
breathing because the air isn't clean? How
much $ is air?
