IGOR
record collec
As always, I'm searching for
records with cover songs to add to
my collection. Now, just this month,
I came across a diverse mix of
cover-vinyl. Check it out: Nick
Cave, The Pretenders, R.E.M. and
Tina Turner cruising across my
turntable, one after another:
R.E.M.
"So. Central Rain"/
"King of the Road"
I.R.S. Records
R.E.M. came to my attention
because of this single from their
latest album, Reconing. On the A
side is "So. Central Rain." This
song, like the rest of the songs on
the album, is in the same vein as
last year's critically acclaimed
Murmur, so not too much new here.
However, the flipside of the single is
a version of Roger Miller's "King of
the Road." This, perhaps, is an odd
choice for the band, since it contains
no vague, hidden messages. Just a
straight-ahead song about being
broke. It sounds like it was recorded
at a rehearsal, or maybe it's some
old throw-away tune, but at least it
shows that these guys have a sense
of humor.
NICK CAVE
Featuring THE BAD SEEDS
"In the Ghetto"/
"The Moon is in the Gutter"
Mute
Now I don't know if Nick Cave
has a sense of humor, or if he's
really serious about singing Elvis
Presley's "In the Ghetto. It's hard to
tell. "In the Ghetto" is a depressing
song about a kid growing up and
dying in Chicago. Pretty serious
stuff, but it's right up Nick's alley.
Having loft Birthday Party last
year, Cave has recruited the Bad
Seeds (a good group in their own
right) to record with. The band plays
a somewhat straightforward ar-
rangement behind Nick's desperate
vocals. This song is not included on
his new album, From Her to Etemity,
and is only available as a single.
THE PRETENDERS
"Thin Line Between Love
and Hate"/"Time the Avenger"
Sire Records
Chrissie Hynde and her Preten-
ders' latest single, "Thin Line
Between Love and Hate," covers
the 70s soul hit almost the same
way it was originally recorded. This
song comes off the album Learning
to Crawl, and fits right in with her
"I'm down but I'm not out" style of
songwriting.
The flipside of the single is a live
version of "Time the Avenger."

TINA TURNER
Private Dancer
Capitol Records
Tina Turner is a singer and not a
songwriter, so the songs on her new
album Private Dancer are all written
by other people, and I can't get
enough! The best of them are Al
Green's "Let's Stay Together,"
which is also a single (with a great
flipside, 1 Wrote a Letter,), and
David Bowie's "1984, both of
which are worth checking out. This
woman can sing like no other, and
as you may already know, she has
had a few years experience at this
game. She can make almost any
song a personal statement, from the
slow "I Can't Stand the Rain" to the
mega-rockin' song "Steel-Claw,"
which features Jeff Beck. All are
delivered from the heart and soul of
Tina Turner. I can't recommend this
record any more strongly. Don't
miss out. I know it ain't thrash, but
hell, ya gotta have some roots, ehl
FANG
Where the Wild Things Are
Boner Records, 2146 Boner St.
Berkeley, CA 94702
If you were any kind of decent kid,
you read (or were read) the book
Where the Wild Things Are. Well
that's the name of this 10-song, 12"
recording by FANG. Sammy and
the rest of the teeth punch out some
discordeous clammer that punches
you in the face and gut. I love this
record! My faves on this disc are
"You're Cracked," "I Wanna Be on
T.V.. "Suck and F..." and "Every-
body Makes Me Barph." The
ultimate tune, bound to make the
A.M. top 40 radio charts is "Berkeley
Heathen Scum" (Well, Berkeley's
full of heathen scum/I should know,
I am one/I'm a drunken, junkie
bum.) Beautifully tasteless material.
Get it now buddy, we're talkin' ten
stars on this one boy!
THIN LIZZY
Live Double Album
Warner Bros. Records
You're all probably coughing and
gagging on your mohawks, but you
deserve a little cultured, seasoned
and experienced rock 'n' roll. I
noticed this album only about two
months ago (it was released in '83),
and being an ardent Thin Lizzy fan
since my days at Del Dios Junior
High back in 1973, 1 just couldn't
pass it up. Here are 19 mind-boggl
ing tunes, where more than half are
bound to set your hearts on fire.
Those of you who are unfortunate
enough to not be familiar with these
guys are truly missing out. We're
talking capital M-E-T-A-L from
w-a-y-y-y-y-y back. Songs like
Thunder and Lightning" (like
thunder and lightning/God damn
it's so exciting), "Angel of Death"
(and I forsee the Holocaust/An
angel of death descending to
destroy the human race), an old
fave, "Jailbreak, and (you must
have heard of this one), "The Boys
Are Back in Town." Almost all of the
tunes are full power except for a
few, like a slower version of the
usually fast "Don't Believe a Word"
(Your heart is like a promise/that
was meant to be broken), and the
heart-jerker ultra-slow, with killer
guitar leads, "Still in Love with
You." This shreds, and you'll never
know till you try it.
