San Francisco is famous every
year for its street fairs. At these fairs
there are a variety of street vendors
selling their wares. At the Haight
Street fair, the street vendors sell
food of every kind, beer, wine, cham-
pagne, tie-dyed everything (Thai
died?), leather everything, kites,
mobiles, candles, sandies, just
about anything anyone stuck in the
past could ever want. Working my
way down the street I came across a
different booth that finally had some-
thing cool to offer without natural in-
gredients or vegetables: Yo-Yos!
The No-Jive Yo-Yo is a product that
is tops in versatility, performance
and quality. The yo-yo is made of
wood and finished with a thick layer
of varnish to keep the friction down.
Most yo-yos have a metal axle
with no way to dig out radical knots.
The No-Jive has a T-nut aluminum
axle with a wood sleeve that fits on
to offer an optimal spinning surface
and easy knot access. You can take
it apart by turning the two halves to
unscrew the No-Jive and also create
three different configurations. The
No-Jive Yo-Yo comes complete with
two spare wood axles and even a
spool of yo-yo string to make new
strings. There is also a booklet with
very clear-cut instructions on as-
sembly and maintenance and a few
tricks tips with a bibliography of
other yo-yo books that are available.

ALVA FISHSTIKS
When you look at the shape of a
board, what do you see? The same
thing in a lot of designs. Alva Skates
6
had a new idea to add to the evolu
tion of skateboard's design with the
Hosoi & Alva Fishstiks. The Hosol
model is 29% x 10% and is availa-
ble in white with red graphics. The
Alva model is bigger, measuring in
at 31 x 10% and comes in black
with red and white graphics. Both
boards feature 15 kicktails for more
leverage and control, major concave
and 4 of upturn in the nose, all bas-
ically for better foot placement. The
Alva and Hosoi models have blunt
noses that make grabs easier and
also help prevent impact damage.
The fish boards have pulled in hips
(à la winger) that gets rid of excess
weight and distributes it to more crit-
ical areas. Keep an eye on these

BRAND X-CON
The X-Con deck is the latest)
board offered by BRAND-X. It is
available in blue with a 10-color
screen on the bottom that features a
skull in the middle with wings creep-
ing out from behind, snakes (cobras)
and a purple heart which the skeletal
hands are holding. The Brand-X
logo on the bottom uses crossed
bones to create the "X" in Brand-X
Definitely a different a colorful
graphic scheme. The specification
on the X-Con deck is: 30%" x 10",
7 ply hardwood with a 15" kick in the
tail. It also has the right amount of
concave to keep your feet where
you put them. Brand-X says the X-
Con deck is the first in a line-up of
four new boards with killer high-
