T.S.O.L. are back from their ex-
tensive national tour, and, boy, did
they ever have a good time. Out on
the East Coast, they hooked up with
the Subhumans and continued for
about seven shows together, which
included one 1%-hour jam a la
T.S.O.L./Subhumans and an inter-
national soccer game between Amer-
ican, British and Canadian bands in
Montreal. But, because the girls
are so ugly in England, the boys
play soccer and are better than the
U.S. boys. So U.S. bands lost. But
so far to date, T.S.O.L. has logged in
70 shows this year and hope to log in
160 by the end of the year. Also
watch for a new T.S.O.L. LP in Sep-
tember. Brian Brannon of the
rock group J.F.A. is coming out with
his 'zine Bow to No Man soon. Also
out soon is the J.F.A. songbook....
New, New, New: the Jungle Studs,
a new band featuring the likes of
Steve Depace (Flipper) on drums,
Tony Chattman (Hanger On) on
bass and vocals, Darren Peligro
(Dead Kennedys) on guitar and
Bruno De Smartazz (Sluglords) on
the other guitar. They perform a
unique style of jungle rock and
should be watched.
More D.K.s Dept.: Jello
Biafra and crew made another ap-
pearance after a lengthy absence
from the gig scene at the infamous
On Broadway club for a show with
D.O.A., Tales of Terror and Fang.
The club was maximum capacity,
and the Dead Kennedys introduced
a few new tunes, one which re-
nounces MTV. It's about time people
started putting their foot down
against that mockery of the rock biz
Also, rumor is, there is no truth to the
rumor that David Kennedy died just
to join the Dead Kennedys... Be on
the lookout in next month's issue for
some heavy-duty coverage of yet
another Skate Rock weekend. One
of our illustrious staff members vol-
lunteered for the ferocious mission
of flying down to Hollywood for
show dedicated exclusively to skate-
boarding (which consisted of Tales
of Terror, Ill Repute, Aggression,
Faction, J.F.A and the Big Boys),
and riding on a school bus back up
north for a show the next night in
S.F. (Big Boys, J.F.A., Personality
Crisis and more), plus some added
crazy stuff in between...Everyone
take this moment to bow their heads
in homage to the On Broadway,
which will close its doors to H.C. for-
ever and become some sort of disco
joint. The O.B, has offered some of

ing out with a new album soon?
Someone said that there were
rumors that Mike Ness died, but
then again, someone said they saw
him thrashing at a Ricky Nelson
show, and screaming. "Ricky, I can
identify with you totally, man. I know
what it's like to be a teen idoll.
Trend of the month: "No Michael
Jackson" buttons. C'mon, some-
one said he's a nice guy... Speak-
ing of nice guys, the Joneses look
like women. This is serious. Besides
being the West Coast's answer to
Johnny Thunder's old Heart-
breakers, the Joneses have been
inclined to draw a serious chick
groupie type audience. People just
probably crave to see things that
have been done before. Hey, Elvis
impersonators have made a killing.

Plain Wrap!?!!? What about
them? Skate Rock? The Ex-
ploited is right. It was a jam-packed
house at the On Broadway, Kraut
had just finished playing and the
headlining group, The Exploited,
were to go on next. Everyone was
ready, but then The Exploited re-
fused to play. Something about no
free beers, no food, etc. Talk about
babies. The club was forced to give
refunds, and everyone loses... Well
then, just shut up, and be glad you
didn't read anything about John Be-
lushi's fiery career in this column.

T.S.O.L
Change Today
Enigma Records
A new T.S.O.L., a new sound, a
new album, and a new attitude to
what has always been a somewhat
controversial band. Their new set-
up has aroused more than a few
ugly heads of the old-core T.S.O.L.
critic-fans. It seems that every time
there's a T.S.O.L. change, everyone
hates it. Well, their new album has a
few good points, and a few bad
points, depending on the way you
look at it. The songs are good, but
they're not thrash. If you're looking
for thrash, don't look here. Some
people say it's over-produced, and
that makes it shitty. But they pro-
duced it themselves and the previ
ous comment only serves as a com-
pliment. Another popular criticism is
that new singer/guitarist Joe Wood
sounds like a Billy Idol/Jim Morri-
son rip-off. Well, it seems that no
one can make up their mind, and
why doesn't anyone call Billy Idol a
Jim Morrison rip-off? Joe sings
with clarity and if it sounded like the
old T.S.O.L., people would say he's
a Jack rip-off. The lyrical content is
deep and well structured, and Joe
has a wide tonal range. "This is un-
heard of in Punk Rock." But this is
just rock and roll and anything goes.
The big question is, where do peo-
ple get off trying to dictate how any
one band should sound? The album
is good, so buy it. Listen to it for what
it is, and judge from that. Or maybe
you're afraid to think for yourselves
and are locked into a hardcore box
of slam-bam. T.S.O.L. obviously
aren't

8 Miles High
SST Records
P.O. Box 1 Lawndale, CA 90260
How many bands have covered
this tune, I don't know. However, this
is the best version yet. Husker Du
pumps this old Byrds' tune up with
lots of adrenalin, distorted guitars
and crushing vocals. The flip side of
this 45 rpm single is a live version of
"Masochism World," again with
guitar and vocals delivering the
punch. Look for the purple and black
picture-sleeve at your local shop or
write SST at the above address.

Wild Thing
Electra Records
Skate to it, dance to it, sing along
with it. This song is the biggest hit of
the summer, and it has nothing to do
with Michael Jackson or Culture
Club. "Wild Thing" is the latest
single by America's best known sec
ret, X. The song has its roots in the
60s psychedelic sound, but X brings
it up to date with a heavy-metal
sound that is new for the band. No
rockabilly riffs from Billy Zoom on
this song, only power chords over
Exene's screaming vocals. How-
ever, individual effort shouldn't over-
shadow what the band has attemp
ted to do as a whole, that is try out a
new sound and see what happens.
With the help of producer Michael
Wagener, X lets the spirit of the
song take over the recording and
you're left craving for more, but
TRUE SOUNDS OF LIBERTY

John Cale
Caribbean Sunset
ZE Records
John Cales' dark visions of the
world have emerged wrapped around
many different styles over the years.
His latest effort, Caribbean Sunset,
continues in the straight ahead, rock
and roll style that Cale has been
using lately. The songs, most nota-
bly "Hungry for Love, Model Beirut
Recital" and "Magazines," have
been in his live shows for the past
year, and this band is abit to deliver
crisp versions on this record. If
you're a John Cale fan, this record
should be added to your collection. If
you've never heard him before, check
out his 1978 release, Sabotage Live,
and hear how the dark side survives.
