Next the ramps were brought in and set
up in a random fashion within an area of
people about 100 feet wide. It was like the
Roman Colisseum relived as the "gladi-
skaters" rampaged around the "pit" of
action barely missing themselves and
piling headlong into the audience when
they tripped at full speed.
There were three ramps: a big four-foot
high slant, a small wedge/transition
back-to-back structure and the infamous
"pyramid" ramp. There were also various
other scurbs and street-esque things
strewn about with no strategic alignment
intended. This made the streetstyle event
a true test of streetwise ingenuity.
Some standouts during the warm-up
battle were Rob Roskopp, Bryce Kanights,
Kevin Thatcher and Bill Ruff. The contest
started and the large contingent of 33
whittled down to 10. Those to make the 10
were: GSD, K.T., Meek, Cab, Kanights,
Spidy, Rosko, Guerrero, Arabia and Ruff.
These ten formed five battling pairs of
two, and were pitted up against each other
in a minute-long jam. The judges merely
picked out who blazed the most. At times
the action would reach such a frenzied
point that there would be four hell-bent
demons of destruction in the arena at
once-blazing past each other and
sometimes through each other-all at full
tilt speeds.
The chaos continued uninterrupted as
shoes went flying, boards launched out of
sight, bodies hurtled into the crowd, and
pieces of ramps literally were torn off.
Lance Mountain, in a fit of crazed
activity, ran up to one of the ramps (sans
board) and hit a fully laid-out back loop!
When all jousting was over, and the dust
had settled, Stevie Caballero had taken
the numero uno place and $300 in cash.
Close behind was Bill Ruff netting $200,
and Rob Roskopp with a $150 prize. Kevin
Thatcher improved his standing over last
year with a fourth place, using a 36-inch
longboard. GSD got fifth and $100.
In the amateur division, the impressive
field was led by Bryce Kanights, who really
was outstanding on the ramps, virtually
inventing new moves as he rode. Last
year's champ, Tommy Guerrero, blazed to
a second with Keith Meek in third. In fourth
was Chris Cook, who pulled off some
extension ladder bombers and other heavy
duty slam-defiers. Next (5th to 8th) in
order were Rick Demontrand, Joe Arabia,
Jon Insco, and Corey O'Brien.
The event ended quickly as skaters
raced off to practice for next year, or
terrorize their own street, or build a street
ramp, or learn a new trick, or maybe they
went off to let the indescribable occurrence
they had just witnessed sink in.
What is streetstyle? Some may know,
some may not, but clearly those in atten-
dance on that afternoon saw the best of
them put words into action.
