SPRING JAM
WARNER-ROBBINS, GA.
THE TASK
To make it to Warner-Robbins,
Ga., to run and skate in a contest.
We leave Thursday nite for a 400-
mile adventure bus ride stopping in
Gainesville to rest and pick up
Monty Nolder.
Off again, early in the morning
with Monty as our new passenger
We are now a tightly packed crew of
seven. Our five-hour drive goes well
except for a flat tire at a rest area.
Everyone but myself makes it into a
terrorist curb session. We hit the
road again and finally arrive in
Warner-Robbins around noon. I am
surprised to already see some skat-
ers from Tennessee and Michigan.
The ramp is 20 feet wide, 10 feet
tall, with 20 feet of flat, has a 4-foot
channel, and a new layer of wood.
This well built ramp is located at
Russ Mullis parents house. A
strange situation since Russ doesn't
live there.
We start to skate and find out the
ramp is as slow as a turtle due to the
morning rain. As the day wears on,
more skaters arrive and the ramp
starts to speed up to the pace of a
jack rabbit after some good sun-
shine, and some heated sessioning
starts to take place.
As the evening sets in, a few head
over to Kevin's to watch some skate
films and consume brew.
We arise Saturday morning to an
overcast, damp morning. We catch
some biscuits for fuel. We arrive at
the ramp to find that more skaters
have arrived during the night and
morning hours.
By noon the sun is out, the ramp is
dry, everyone is ripping, even Ray
Underhill. Ray unwillingly went for
the body abuse method by bailing
off the ramp and ripping his arm
open. Well, at least some stitches
were able to fix it.
Registration starts and we have
10 sponsored and 20 unsponsored
skaters going for prizes and trophies.
With the help of locals Russ Mullis
and Kevin Pruit the contest is about
to get under way. Each skater will
take two runs with the best run qual-
ifying them for the jam.
The unsponsored jam cuts to
eight and the sponsored cut to five.
Monty Nolder, Cleo Coney, and
Ripped Ray Underhill are our
judges.
Joe Bowers and Pat Clarke
Monty Nolder takes to the ramp
between qualifying and the jam, ex-
citing everyone with his aggressive
style and abundance of tricks.
Those skating in the unsponsored
jam were Joe Bowers, Tommy Kay,
Jay Cabler, Mark Smith, John
Hughes, Tim Aldworth, Jeff Ste-
phenson, and Mark Noland. These
guys skated well and all deserved to
make the cut.
In the sponsored division Bill Dan-
forth, Pat Clarke, Lyle Donoho, Britt
Parrot, and Randy Barfield all made
the cut into the sponsored jam.
Now the excitement builds higher
as the skating gets better and the
energy starts to flow through the
crowd.
The unsponsored have a jam,
then the sponsored jam, then the
unsponsored and then the spon-
sored again. The scores from each
jam are combined to determine the
winner.
The second jam brings out the
best in everyone. Joe Bowers is
looking the best with a variety of
tricks combined with consistency.
Tommy Kay is skating like a mad-
man slashing all over the ramp, little
Tim Aldsworth is stoking everyone
with his inverts and airs, while Mark
Smith is ollieing the channel and
sketching all over but is staying on.
The sponsored have a heated ses-
sion with Bill Danforth blazing all
sorts of tricks, Pat Clarke skating
fast and aggressive, Lyle Donoho
doing tricks in his own unique style,
Britt Parrott doing consistent airs,
and Randy Barfield doing rad egg-
plants.
In the unsponsored Joe Bowers
ends up the winner with Tommy Kay
in second, Mark Smith in third, Jay
Cabler in fourth and Tim Aldsworth
in fifth
In the sponsored division Pat
Clarke is first with Bill Danforth close
behind, Lyle Donoho in third, Randy
Barfield in fourth and Britt Parrot
fifth.
After the contest there was a skat
ers party with a band and a soon
emptied keg. Most partied till late
while some had to hit the road at
night.
The contest was a big success. It
was a good way to tie the souther
and northern amateurs together.
Now that my task has all been ac-
complished, I must bid you a good-
bye.
