SOMETHIN ELSE
THE CLASSICS
When a long skated spot is suddenly rendered
useless by forces that are beyond our control, it is a
time to reflect upon some of the classic moments
before searching out the next thrashable terrain. Such
is the case with a local (Bay Area) spillway known
variously as the Belmont Drop, the Backdoor, etc.,
which was recently steel-barred and clamped shut to
skating after a 10-year hiatus. The lady whose yard
provided access for the thousands who have skated
there over the years was completely cool towards the
skate scene. But the city finally prevailed and destroyed
the spillway.
This photo of an unknown butt boarder jumping a row
of skates in 1978 sums up the type of radical and
spontaneous sessioning that went down.
