BAND UNKNOWN
Hey, skaters unite! If you see a
skater who's not so good help him or
her out instead of laughing! Maybe
then with more skaters we'll get rid
of those fuggin' BMXers.
Also, I live in Santa Cruz, with so
many skaters you think there'd be a
skate band, well no such luck. Back
in Yuba City there weren't half as
many skaters, but we had a way hot
band (Child Support). Get some
thing started, so if any skater In
Santa Cruz wants to get something
flowing drop me a line.

Local S.C. band "MAD" might like to
hear from you, if you don't hear them
first. They all rip sticks. T-ed.
THANK PETE
At a recent contest in St. Pete,
Florida (Elroy's Ramp), the Bay
Area was able to see some real ska-
tin. Thanx to your magazine for
sponsoring it. As a local at John's
ramp I'd like to congratulate your
staff for surviving through the past
so skatin' and skaters can be recog
nized.
John Clark

You're welcome John. We here at
THRASHER would like to thank
John Grigley and his family for host-
ing the St. Pete Jam. T-ed.
POLITICO
We have just build a new halfpipe.
It's 8 ft. high, 10 ft. wide, and has 16
ft. of flat bottom. We built it inside a
barn so it can be ridden all year long.
In the last couple of issues I've no-
ticed some of your articles have
taken a political tum. I agree that
world events are important but they
should be left to magazines like
Newsweek that can cover them in
depth and give an unbiased view.
Thanks

You've got a point there Chuck. All
you skaters who read Time and
Newsweek raise your hand. Hmmm;
just as I thought. We realize a lot of
types skate and read THRASHER to
get away from all the political crap,
but never before has humankind
been on the brink of world devasta-
tion like we are now. Skaters are an
aware bunch (more so than those in
mindless jock sports or BMX, etc)
and it is evident in your letters. All we
ask is that we should all be aware of
what's happening around us. If
you're not then ask questions of
your parents or older brothers and
sisters. If you're curious, and you
should be, then find out, speak out.
Skate and Destroy ignorance. T-ed.

I'm truly glad to see metal rep-ning his hands across the chords as
resented in your mag. It opens your fast as he can, not knowing what the
readers' minds to a broader span of hell he is doing. I also want to say
music. I hear too many of my friends that Dan "Headbanger" Lutz sounds
preaching against heavy metal be- pretty cool-just get the hardcore
cause that's what hardcores are, out of your mind, Dan. "Heavy Metal
supposed to do. It is true that a lot of Rules.
self-proclaimed heavy metal sucks,
but if one were to look into the field
more deeply, he would find metal
that would really get some adrena-bers that skate and a lot with mem
line flowing. Bands like Metallica,
Rave, Venom, Motorhead, and Bat
tle Axe are prime examples of pure,
raw, crunching metal. The reason
metal appeals to me is because it
has the speed of hardcore yet with a
much tighter and cleaner sound.
Skating to metal is even better.
There is nothing like blasting an air
to the beat of Metallica.
Oh yeah, that reminds me, the
skating scene up here is getting
stronger by the day. Two halfpipes,
two shreddable pools, and some hot
street locations make up our basic
turf. During the winter months, we
are forced to the slopes on our sno-
boards. The only problem with the
scene up here is that Vermonters
are generally "out of it" when it
comes to skateboarding. A skating
day does not pass without our group
hearing some old conservative Ver-
monter saying "Looky thar Maybel,
them are one o' them board-skat-

METALCORE
I'm writing in to set a bunch of
readers straight. Anybody who thinks
punk or skate bands rule over heavy
metal, better take their head out
of their ass, and take a good look
around. Heavy metal is here to stay.
It always has been alive and always
will be. And these kids who write in
and say heavy metal is #1 but punk
is rad too, they're all fake rockers.
I don't understand how you can
call one section of your mag "Skate
Rock. It's not rock, it's punk, it's
trash. Rock is a group of highly
skilled musicians playing music that
fits together and performs a good
sound; punk is an out-of-tune guitar
本
bers who don't. Those of the first
category we call "Skatebands" or
"Skaterock," those in the second
group make up the rest. We cover
both, and more, and you can call it
whatever you like. Read on. T-ed.
NO TOLERANCE
Your mag is obviously the ruler
and so is the Boston Skate/Hard-
core scene. We don't have 12 ft.
high halfpipes or backyard pools.
We are not going to lie and tell you
about the table tops, varials, hand-
plants, etc. that we have done or can
do. We (the Boston/West Rox Crew)
skate non-stop no matter what it
takes. We steal our wood and save
our boards, because we can't afford
the shit that all you rich liars buy. We
have been skating longer than most
of you out there, but who gives a
poop! We must unite to fight against:
poverty, brutality, racism, and lame-
ness! Until next time.
Go skate or Go mate! Love,

Dearest Thrasher, my friends and
I are totally hardcore skaters and we
thrash the suburban streets we also
shred on my halfpipe at home, the
skate scene here is radically ripe.
One thing that bugs me is there are a
bunch of chokey boys that think they
can cope with any vertical bank, or
any steep inclines. My friends and I
are working on our Charprico flat
twist, somewhat like a backside aer-
ial. My set up is an Uncle Wiggley.
Trackers and Street Cubics.
Some of the hottest boarders in
my area are JJ 'Skate' Olivoti, Chris
Cruiser' Hoy and Doug 'Rad' Can-
ning. And the hottest girl skater
is Lena Nordstrom from Sweden.
Please print this letter so you can
encourage people to skate all over.

FAKIE
I'm writing from Cross Lanes,
West Virginia. Skateboarding is
growing here, but that's not what I'm
writing to tell about. I always read
letters of how the skaters, bikers,
and surfers hate fakes. Well, I'm one
of those so called fakes. I'm the kid
that went and got a skateboard
'cause everyone else had one. I'm
the kid who goes out to skate and
doesn't accomplish shit. I'm the kid
who subscribed to Thrasher be-
cause everyone else did. I'm the kid
that everyone, skates or not, thinks
is an asshole. I'm the kid that dress-
es, talks and acts like everyone but
himself.
Ya know, but now I wonder if all
I've done is all in vain. Now I'm not
accepted by all the people who used
to be my friends nor by the people
who I have been trying to get ac-
cepted by. Is it really worth it?
Thanx
Rican

SKATE SCENE
I'm a 15-year-old skater from
Westwood, Mass. I've been skating
for about eight years, but I just start-
ed skating vert this year. I have an 8
ft. quarter pipe that will be a halfpipe
sometime in the near future. We got
about 15 skaters here that are pretty
hot; we take a lot of bullshit from the
cops. They harass us because they
got nothing better to do. We keep
busy in the winter by skating malls,
the school halls, and having lung
freezers at the porta-quarta. Todd B.
and Steve M. thrash heavily.
Skate forever,

PUZZLER
I just recently moved to Beaufort,
S.C. from Virginia, Beach, Va. The
skate scene here is non-existent,
but I built a halfpipe which has the
locals puzzled. No one down here
likes hardcore but I don't care I know
skating lives and hardcore rules. I
was wondering are there any other
skaters in S.C.? It gets pretty lonely
down here.
