ice is now broken. The Breakouts
debut E.P. No More has exploded
onto the airwaves with a gutsy
locomotive drive that is familiar yet
distinct. By far one of the best re-
leases out of the tail end of 1983. The
title song, No More, receives a lot of
attention by the deejays in my home-
town. I first heard of this band through
Street Scott, who just happens to be
the upstairs neighbor of Danny, The
Breakouts guitarist. In fact, Danny's

Thank you. After reading that silly
Skate Rock interview with Agent
Orange in last month's issue, I just
had to check out their latest release,
When You Least Expect It, on What/
Enigma. The album title says it all. I
would've never expected anything
like this from this band. Not that I'm
saying that it's bad. "Oh contraire." It's
excellent. It's just that these three
gentlemen are talented enough to
convincingly mold their style, while
maturing their whole sound. Although
lacking the high energy aggro-ness of
the Living In Darkness EP, from a few
years back, this new release is still
conceivably well rounded. Out of the
four songs, half are covers of other
songs. They are: "Somebody to Love"
and "Out of Limits." "Somebody..." is
an excellent rendition of that old Jef-
ferson Airplane song, and they also
do justice to what's probably an old
classic Ventures instrumental "Out of
Limits. Word has it that Mike (singer/
guitarist) learned to play guitar when
he was a little kid of eight, to his
brother's surf records. As for their
originals, hmm, mmm, hmmm. Tasty
and tasteful. The poetic sounding "It's
Up to Me and You" is far from hard-
core. This tender melody is sure to be
"Our Song" in many romantic circles.

"That is a good disc. Mellow but
good. I went down to the Thrasher edi-
forial offices last week to see if any
good promos had floated in. There
were a couple of record packages.
One was curiously creased. It was the
size of a record, but since it was bent,
PDER
I figured it was merely photos or
something. Nope. I opened it and it
was a record from the Los Angeles
area band Circle One on Upstart Rec-
ords/11343 Homedale Street/Los
Angeles, CA 90049. There was a
crease right across the front of the
jacket. Things didn't look good. I'd
seen this band a long time ago at one
of the Berkeley outdoor H.C. shows,
and was anxious to hear what this rec-
ord was gonna sound like. My worst
suspicions were correct. The record
was fragmented inside the jacket.
Busted into seven pieces."
"You mean you went through all of
that, and the record was broken?"
"Yup, but it's supposed to be good."
"Why didn't you talk about a record
that you listened to?"
"Wait. There was another package."
"What was that?"
"Well, it looked just like the other
one. But it wasn't creased or broken. It
was from a band called D.I. on Re-
venge Records."
"What's D.I. stand for?"
"Don't know, but the record is good.
It has about five songs on it. One of
'em is called Richard Hung Himself.
Pretty creative lyrics, "Richard hung
himself/He did it just the other day/Je-
sus came and pushed him off the
shelf." Another song, one of the faster
ones on the album, is called "1 Like
Guns. This song is "way-cool." "I like
guns/They keep America free..." But
out of all of the songs, my favorite is
called Purgatory, which is a slow
heavydirge-metalesque type song that
just shatters my soul. This is a pretty
hot disc. For information write to: P.O

"Are you through?"
"Never, what do you have next?"
"Well, I was just going to tell you that
last night the Dead Kennedy's played
in downtown San Francisco, over on
Castro St. as part of a city-wide pro-
test against the city's twisted judicial
system. Namely the widely publicized
cone and homosexual councilman
Harvey Milk in 1978. The whole city
was up in arms, because a man got
away with murder and basically was
punished with little more than a hand
slap. They say his excuse was he was
high on Twinkies."
1 kept my ass away from there. I
thought the gays were gonna riot
again."
