There was a contest in Houston at the Texas pipeline when
that was still open. Well, we just got back in from Florida, and on
the day of the contest, was the day the hostages were taken (in
Iran). That's the only way for me to remember that," Jeff said, just
before swallowing his last piece of fried cheese.
"Who are some of the guys who have stuck with it since the
beginning?"
"Well, there's people coming back. As far as the hardcore guys
in Dallas, there's Jeff Phillips, Dan Wilkes, Craig Johnson, Allen
Guimond. They've never quit, and their skating shows that
they've never quit."
"Who was that guy with glasses? The one they called
Poindexter or something."
"Oh, Brett Anderson, he's been around. He went to the pipes
with us."
"What about his goofy friend?"
"Oh, that's Kenny Peyton. Goofy in a good sort of way though.
There really is a big skate crew that comes out for these
contests, a lot of them didn't even show up for this contest. I don't
know why. Whoah, we're loosing the ketchup."
"Where's that Burris guy from?"
"Planet Earth. That guy is out of his mind. He has good
intentions, but his brain is on backwards, or something."
"You mean he has an awkward way of going through life?"
"Yup! He's entertaining though, he wouldn't hurt you. He's an
innocent. When we were in New York he'd go,'yah, I'd like to live
here and live on the street, it'd be great! and we'd say, 'O.K.
then we'll leave you here. Then the next place we'd go to he'd
say, "Yah, I'd like to live here, and live on the street, it'd be great!"
He'd say that everywhere.
A lot of guys from Houston skate now: Gibson, Todd Prince,
Hubert, Joe Nichols...maybe I shouldn't even mention him...
yeah, I will, Joe Nichols. The Johnny fan club. Those are the
rippers of Houston. The Johnny Gibson Fan Club. They all ride
one of his boards, even back when he was riding for Caster, they
would ride the identical set-up."
Do they call themselves the Johnny Fan Club?"
"No. No, no. If you called them that...they wouldn't like it.
There's a lot of locals on the other side of Houston that ride
something else, they don't want to look trendy. Oh, I just
remembered another guy from the old days, Mark Dick, the other
Mad Dog. That guy is the wildest guy you'll ever meet. He and
his brothers 'The Dick Brothers'-you don't mess with the Dick
Brothers.
"Were you around when all of the Pros came out-Blackhart,
Wally, Schnieder, you know, all of the infamy in San Antonio
circa late '78."
"Blackhart did not really throw a T.V. out the window. We were
up in their room, a penthouse. I don't know how they raided a
penthouse. It had a living room and two adjoining bedrooms.
They didn't even skate. Blackhart and Schnieder staying in that
room, and they didn't even skate. But the part about the
sculpture, this big, steel thirig, it had all these arms and things.
They rebent it around., You couldn't tell the difference though. A
lot of holes got put in the ceilings of the hotel hallways. Running
down the halls, punching holes in the ceiling. Also, one of the
Pros, not mentioning names, but one of them left behind
something that turned into another human being. At least that's
what some of the guys in Corpus Christi said. That was a long
time ago. In those days I met the 'Big Boys' before they were a
band. They were skating Pflugerville before there were even
parks. They would wear their wheels down to the bearings. But
the 'Big Boys' are some of the biggest hearted guys around.
They're from Austin. What other band would come all this way to
play for free?"
"What about this contest? How do you feel about it?"
"Not as big of a spectator turnout as I expected. But the
spectators that did show up were quality people, so, I have no
reason to complain. The people who were there wanted to be
there."

on the couch.
