KT: What do you think of the Pro park
contest format?
MM: They're not sticking with it. Now there's
the World Series but there should be another
series like the Hester Series. They don't have
any kind of a system right now. They're just try
ing a little bit of everything, like at Del Mar, that
system just stunk.
KT: Did you see what was going on there?
Were you confused?
MM: No I understood it afterwards, but they
admitted to me that they had blown it.
KT: I did notice you were eliminated kind
of early?
MM: Yeah! It was the first match-up, I lost, no
losers bracket, I was out. So the best I could do
was fifth. I didn't know I was out of it until Stacy
said, "You're done." That single elimination stuff
is stupid.
KT: Since that's kind of fresh on your
mind, how about the judging?
MM: You never can tell...the judging was
good....Don't you think sometimes there should
be a second set of scores almost, you know,
style, or degree of difficulty or something like
that? But the judges are always different which I
guess they should be.
KT: Do you think it all comes out in the
wash anyway?
MM: Yeah. Well, whoever is going to be at the
top has weaseled his way through there.
KT: What about the series set-up as op-
posed to the session format?
MM: I don't even think they needed the
scores, like at Joe's Ramp Jam. They (judges)
were marking falls but I think they were kind of
just looking to see who was shredding, who was
skating the best. At first they weren't counting
falls but during the second session I saw a lot of
the judges marking 'em down every time some-
body fell. So I thought, "Well, I better stay on my
board for the second session. The first session I
think I was behind a little bit 'cause I was going
for bio airs and stuff and I would just keep skating
until I fell. During the second session I stayed on
my board.
KT: You probably put in the most time
skating on the ramp that day. Although Steve
(Caballero) seems to get more energized the
more he skates.
MM: Yeah, he has a lot of endurance for a lit-
tle guy. He turns on, he had a lot of good tricks
there too, Miller flip canyon!!
KT: What would you like to see in the fu-
ture for contests? Different formats, different
judging, different events?
MM: Well, I think when there's a contest on a
halfpipe it should almost always be a jam ses-
sion. It's just too hard to do runs and people are
basically just doing the same moves so it's hard
to judge. You can see the skating more in a half
hour session than you can just taking a few runs.
When you have a pool like Del Mar you take
runs. It should be broken up. You don't want to
do the same thing over and over. I don't want to
jam all the time, you want to be able to make your
own run, practice it and make it real spectacular.
KT: Do you pull off things by yourself that
you don't even try in a contest?
MM: Oh, yeah. I skate a lot by myself in
Florida and I hate skating by myself 'cause
there's nobody there and if it's not fun why do it,
then it's like work. But you get done what you
want to get done. If you want to practice say fakie
hand plants there's nobody to distract you. But
then it gets boring after a while. So I go and ride
St. Pete or I drive to Orlando.
KT: What is the status on the movie? It
was called 'California Cowboys' and has
since been changed to...?
MM: It's been changed to 'Escape from El Di-
ablo' which has been changed again. I guess
they want to shoot some different scenes. They
opened it up somewhere in the boonies and as is
