Board Hacky, anyone?
LOW BLOWS
ASK THE DOCTOR
Last month I was laying low on vaca-
tion and missed the article, again! Didn't
notice eh? Oh well. Anyway we were
talkin about skate slams and related in-
juries a couple of months back. I'd like
to reiterate on a few points regarding
the most common skate injury that
we've seen, that would of course, be the
knee. Funny thing is you don't really
have to slam hard to tear or stretch
those delicate knee joint ligaments to
shreds. Just the slightest off balance.
twist at the wrong moment can render
your knee literally useless for months at
a time, as well as being extremely pain-
ful.
But, what can you do?d Before the in-
jury, not much, there's no way to antici-
pate it. If you're trying not to injure a cer-
tain area you're not concentrating on
your skating as much as you should-
that could lead to a fall or a twist. Basi-
cally, go for what you know, stay healthy
and skate with a clear head. A set of
kneepads will give you support as well
as protection.
If you've already injured yourself slap
an ice pack on there A.S.A.P. Once the
swelling subsides completely start in
with some Jacuzzi whirlpool warm
water treatment to jack up the circula-
tion. If you don't stay off it and let it heal
the next time it happens it could be
worse and you may find yourself going
under the knife.
Once you are on the road to recovery
and can get around pretty good, try
some easy workouts like just pushing
down the street on your board. Another
thing that I've been getting into quite ex-
tensively is Hacky Sack. You know, turd
soccer, the game that everyone hates
until they shut-up and play it. I still
haven't figured out whether it's good or
bad for the already injured knee, but it
seems to help with your balance and
coordination.
That's about it on knee damage. If you
skate a lot of vert consider yourself
warned, it could happen and I hope
maybe these suggestions will help. Of
course, when in doubt, check it out.
Have a doctor put you back together if
you feel at all questionable about a
skate injury.
O.K. On to those letters. (YAY!)
TAKE IT WITH YA
My problem is one that most all school
goers face. It is "What to do with your board
when school starts?" Most boards don't fit
in lockers or backpacks and dip-shit knows
not to put it in the bushes if he wants to see
it again. Please help.
Sincerely Thrashing

Hey, now you're skatin' up my alley.
My skate got me into more trouble at
school than you'd believe. As a matter
of fact it was my board that got me
kicked out. I went to Willow Glen-they
had this gym that had a round roof with
a flat/banked area on top, the banks
were about 10 or 15 feet wide at about
20 slope with a 10 foot flat center, in
other words just enough to get a cruis-
ing gyration going, plus being 70 feet or
so in the air was a rush. Anyway it was
lunch one day and they had this big jock
rally right in front of the gym and it really
sucked, but, there was about 2 or 3
hundred people out there. So I decided
to give them a little taste of skating. I
went up on top and did handstands
back and forth, well a few people
noticed and somebody said something
on the loudspeaker. Next thing I know.
every official in the school was there
along with 3 or 4 cops trying to get their
hands on me. Well fortunately I escaped
through the field. The next day when I
skated to class as usual, there was the
dean of boys waiting for me to explain
why I had been expelled. Anyway that
was then and this is now. So to answer
your question:
What's the matter with taking it with
you? I did. I'm sure a lot of skaters ride
their boards to class. It's one of the fast-
est ways around. You've just got to get
off your ass and skate to class.

NOT IN OUR POOL!
Why us?
Dear Rick:
Why do Thrashers stereotype us
BMXers? We (BMXers) don't put any B.S.
in our mags. BMX action considered put-
ting skateboarding into their mag. I'm a de-
dicated BMXer and love it, but still I have a
board and like to ride it.

What is BMX anyway? I mean what's it
stand for-Motocross, right? And what
is Motocross? It's dirt, mud, rocks 'n'
shit. Not skateparks and pools, I mean,
hey, I can appreciate BMX; in fact, I used
to race. But, the fact is the true skater
doesn't want a bunch of wannabe
BMXers invading our skate terrain. You
wanna ride a bike? Do it in the dirt. We
don't skate in your toilet; don't piss in
our pool.
RAMP SMARTS
I'm going to build a halfpipe soon and I
have some questions:
A: If you lay the plywood lengthwise in-
stead off widthwise will it reduce cracks and
make a smoother ride on the ramp?
B: This may sound stupid, but I heard if
you put egg cartons under the ramp be-
tween the 2X4's under the plywood it will
reduce the noise. Is this true? Are there any
other ways, like insulation?
C: And last, if you sealed up the plywood
with polyurethane and then put two light
coats of paint, would it be a slippery sur-
face?

Well, number one, if you lay the ply
with the grain in the same direction
you're skating, the biggest result will be
an increase in speed and yes, a definite
smoother ride. As far as the cracks,
there will most likely be a decrease be-
cause of less stress per square foot.
And number two, I would say you're
right again. I think you give yourself less
credit than you deserve, egg cartons,
fibreglass insulation, or even old blan-
kets, tacked in underneath the transi-
tion, behind the ramp, will reduce the
noise considerably.
Number three: what you suggest is an
excellent method for not only sealing
your wood but also insuring a decrease
in splinter problems and ultimately in-
creasing your speed. As far as the slip-
pery surface, you can get away from
that just by using a non-glossy or ex-
terior paint. So don't worry, you're
headed in the right direction.
