very small boy. It was that song "The
Merry-go-round." So, since I knew it,!
started singing the words to it, pretty loud,
in fact. But not TOO loud, mind you. Isang
it sort of quiet. Matter of fact, I just whis-
pered it, if you want to know the truth. The
words went something like this:
Sitting on a horsey, up and down
Sitting, going around and 'round
Thinking of no one or nowhere
Mother, may I ride again?
The old man continued to play, but I
couldn't sing any more because I forgot the
rest of the words. So, I just kept listening to
him play as I stared up into the night-time
sky, looking for something. And then
suddenly, the music died.
"Hey...boy. Only you know the answer
to that one. But don't worry 'bout it. Life's a
joke, son, I'm tellin' ya. Life's a joke."
But the thing is, I didn't know the answer.
I really didn't. And my heart ached to know
the answer. But a couple of minutes later, it
didn't even matter, 'cause we both got up
and walked over and carved our names
and junk deep into some wet cement with
a stick on a brand-new block of sidewalk a
little bit down from the curb 'cause we
didn't have anything else to do."
"Just think, boy..." he said. "We'll come
here 10 years from now and just stand and
laugh at this here."
Then the old guy sat back down on the
steps and started playing his harmonical
again. He was playing another song back
from my childhood and it just moved my
soul. For a minute, it took the sad out of
me. I started skating around and 'round
there on the sidewalk while the music filled
my ears. I skated free in a circle there
under the faint glow of the street light while
he played the blues. And a little while later,
we were finished. Everything was quiet
once again.
"Well, son. I think it's about time for me to
pack it up and move on," the old man
spoke as he stood up.
"Yeah, I've got place to go myself," I told
him. He then started to walk away from me.
"Hey, maybe I'll see you around some-
time, huh?" I said.
"Yeah, don't make a stranger of yourself,
now.
"I won't. I won't." I said. I meant it, too. I
thought about everything for a minute, and
then I started skating away from him.
"hey, thanks!" the old man yelled, as he
turned around toward me.
"Thanks for what?" I said. I stopped
skating. I didn't know what he was talking
about at all.
Thanks for being my friend," he spoke.
Then he turned around and walked away.
Well, it's been a couple of months since
that day, and I haven't seen that old man
around anywhere. I've been skating and
hanging around on the corner every
evening near twilight, hoping that he'll
come around sometime. And last night,
just after sundown, I went to go take a look
at our names that we carved into the wet
cement that one time. And when I got there
to that spot on the sidewalk, I looked down
upon the concrete, and my name was still
carved in there. But the old man's name
was gone.
