FROM THE UNDERGROUND
WARF RAT TALES
Warf Rat Records
Garage music. Real garage music.
Some of you younger pups may not
remember, but back there in the "six-
ties," which fell in between the Rocka-
billy "fifties and the progressive
"seventies," was the inception of the
garage band. Now this was before
rock 'n' roll was considered to be any
way to make a living, let alone be-
come a superstar. Sure, the Beatles
were there, and the Stones, Yard-
birds, Kinks, etc., but that was differ-
ent. They were all English. Besides
somebody had to write the songs so
that us American kids could copy 'em.
And copy we did. Hey, England may
have had the initiative but America
had the suburbs. And with the suburbs
you got garages. Preferably a two-car
garage. All the more room to house
those Fender and Vox guitars and
amps, a Farfisa organ, and basic Lud-
wig drum kit. Throw in a couple of tam-
borines and maybe a harmonica and
you were happening. Cover tunes of
the day were "Under My Thumb,"
"Satisfaction," "Gloria," "Louie Louie,
"All Day and All of the Night," and
maybe even a few Beach Boys num-
bers. Oh and of course, the Beatles.
But that was then, this is now.
Twenty years later. Get with it. Get
NEW ORDER
From Manchester in 1977, a band
called Joy Division came forth to as-
sume the reins during a tumultuous
time in British music. Joy Division
was about the most influential British
rock band to arise after the initial im-
pact of the first punk bands such as,
The Clash and The Sex Pistols.
When their first LP, Unknown Plea-
sures achieved unexpected success
(it sold over a million copies
worldwide). It was more than enough
proof of Joy Division's preponder
ance. Tragically, their ascendency in
British music was checked in 1979 by
the sudden suicide of the lyricist and
lead vocalist lan Curtis. Joy Divi-
sion's second studio album, Closer,
was released after Curtis' death, for it
had already been recorded.
Following a brief period of disunity,
the remaining members of the band
reorganized and appeared as New
Order. They produced a rather tenta-
tive first album and a few excellent
singles. The emphasis switched from
the characters of one man to the
dazzling capabilities of the whole
group. Their music has been skillfully
developed, but it still preserves the
original sense of strain and tension in
its uplifting sound. After the addition of
Gillian Gilbert on keyboards and voc-
als, New Order released an album
called Movement in twelve countries,
to meet a demanding market.
In Power, Corruption, and Lies,
New Order has reached a new

by nine new L.A. garage bands: The
Point, Wednesday Week, Rain
Parade, The Leaving Trains, The
Last, 100 Flowers. Unless you live in
LA, you've probably never heard of
most of these outfits. But here they
are. Garage music of the '80s. No-
thing of the "major breakthrough" cat-
egory here as far as new sounds go,
but all of these bands have a fairly
gutsy popedelic sound that is refresh-
ing, even if it is a throwback to the six-
ties.
It must be the energy of youth that
sounds so familiar. Ripping ax men
are all over this album. The Last,
Leaving Trains, The Point and The
Questions all feature future guitar
heroes. Great vocal arrangements
can be found in Wednesday Wheels
and The Rain Parade. There is no
shortage of song-writing talent, all 15.
songs are originals and I think this is
where the similarity in the sound
comes from. All the musicians on this
album share the same surroundings,
same garages, maybe the same
guitars, yet every song is unique and
every song is good. I have to hear
more from all these bands.
KT
band provides a unique blend of new
and old as it interplays the guitar and
bass with surging synthesizers while
supporting all with sharp, crisp drums
of driving force. Fortunately, instead
of
being completely effaced, the qual-
ity and force of the traditional musical
instruments are enhanced and
strengthened by the electronic ac-
companiment.
The vocals have uneasy, cogitative
characteristics, similar to lan Curtis
style, which are reinforced by Gilbert's
histrionic expertise on the keys.
BLUE DEVILS GONE RED!
One evening I unknowingly found
myself at Radio City (AKA. Roach
Hotel). Upon entry I was shocked by
the powerful sound emanating from
the Bettie on stage. This quickly drew
my attention. The band's sound was
clean but had a raw attack. The bop-
pin' beat had my feet moving at once,
and before long I was dancing with
every kitten I could get my hands on

myself dry, I peered through the

smoke and saw this kat flailing on his
five-string upright bass, with the ag-
gression of a skate rat doing a gnarley
frontside grind. His right hand was
slappin' so fast it was a mere blur. I
didn't think his bass neck would make
it through the next number.
After gassin' on this goner I couldn't
help but notice the drummer with his
mouth hanging open, obviously gap-
ing for oxygen in the smoke-filled dive,
he pounded his skins with his left hand
open, which is a real treat in this day

The tracks Age of Consent and The
Village have uplifting spirit and they
dynamically radiate a lot of energy.
Your Silent Face is, a slower paced
track, but its lavish tunefulness makes
it just as good as the others.
Power, Corruption and Lies, brings
lyrics remindful of its rather menacing
title with emotional renascence and
extollations of love, that are emphati-
cally provocative, because they totally
surpass New Order's unpleasant
times past.
New Order has come a long way
from its roots in Joy Division. Its
sound has even changed from the
early days of its reorganization and
the production of its infamous Blue
Monday. New Order's style keeps im-
proving with each release, it is obvi-
ous by this new LP, Power, Corruption
and Lies, that New Order's future is far
from bleak.
