DROPPIN' IN
The skatepunk band Slam whips off
"Wild Riders of Boards," while Hans
"Puttis Jacobsson is interviewed by
Per Holknekt about his life as a skater
in Sweden:
P: Tell me a little about yourself.
H: Well, I'm 18. I work as a cook, I've.
been skating for four years and I've
got a girlfriend named Helena.
P: Why cook?
H: What else should I be? I don't
wanna sell cars (Volvo, of course) like
my dad.
P: So you're in love, you're a cook
and you're a rich man's son. Then
how come you don't play tennis.
H: Well, actually my dad has his own
tennis court, but still it's too late to be
no. 1 in tennis.
P: So you skate only to become no.
1?
H: Not really, cause it's really a lot of
fun. But still I wouldn't mind being
best. And I'm gonna start it all by beat-
ing all the top Swedes, though I'm al-
ready better than those guys.
P: And then?
H: In a fair contest I could probably
match the American dudes, I mean in
a ramp. In a pool they sure would kick
my ass. What I need in a pool is some
time....just look at Tony Magnusson!!!
P: Caballero first and McGill secorid
in Kona's ramp right after the camp in
Sweden, and still people say that
some of you Swedes skated better
than Mike now and then at the camp.
H: No, don't write that! Then me and
Mike will be in a fight again. Just like at
the camp when I poured water inside
his sweater....Hey, c'mon! Don't even
write that
P: Tell me a little about the Swedish
skateboarding summer camp.
INTERVIEW:

bearings with two layers of those little
metal balls. That's my very own
idea!!!!
P: HA HA HA HA I'm sure. Well, what
about tricks in the future?
H: A lot of freestyle on vert: And
backwards riding, variels, reverts and
into-fakies.
P: What's gonna happen to slalom,
downhill, etc.?
H: I guess that there will be some
poor suckers left. Though I can't even
see why people skate slalom
P: I agree! Streetskating then...do
you do a lot of that on your spare time?
H: Sometimes. Approximately 7 per-
cent of my skating time. Goddamit...I
can't even answer a simple question,
Sorry.
P: What do you think it takes so that
skateboarding won't die?
H: A new Swedish skateboard feder-
ation, more people like me, who
makes TV come to contests and stuff.
And why not a demo at the 1984
Olympics in Los Angeles. And, of
course, a lot of more places to skate.
But I think that it'll survive any
ways...why shouldn't it?
P: Are you asking me? Rank the
world's top skateboard countries.
H: In vert I'd say Russia, Japan,
Nigeria.
P: Come on!!
H: Okay, in vert USA, Sweden, Eng-
land, and in freestyle Sweden or USA,
and then West Germany. Though I
don't know a shit about Canada!
P: You are know as being arrogant
and Mr. "Too Cool." Would you be that
way if your hottest trick was a one-
wheeler?
H: Definitely not!
P: Why not?
H: Because then I'd just hang around
being ashamed of my own skating like
everybody else.
P: Do you have any goals?
H: Yeah, to beat Bauta (Hans
Göthberg) when everybody else is
watching. And to get some more
sponsors. A big THANK YOU to
Tracker who is my only real sponsor.
Quite the chef, Hans whips up a batch of his favorite trucks and rips a
handplant on his ramp, built inside of his father's indoor pool.
climate and our "president."
P: What skaters have influenced
your skating?
H: D.P. HA HA HA?!?! My ex-
nickname was "Duane Puttis" be-
cause of my style. Other guys are
Gator and Cab.
P: So do you wanna become fa-
mous, a good skatter or both?
H: In Sweden both, and in states I'd
just like to be considered as hot!
P: Do you only skate vert?
H: No, I even skate some freestyle
H: Well, it's been goin' on for four occasionally, and banks too. I'm actu-
years now, and I've been at three. You ally a pretty hot all-around skater.
almost do everything but skate: mess P: Do you think that vertical skating
around with the grouples, party, skim, will be ahead of freestyle even in
have food fights...and I guess we about five years?
skate a little too. Mike and Steve have H: I think so, but Rodney has done a
done a lot for the camp. Hot skaters, lot for the freestylers, so now even the
good instructors, and damn good cowards will get into the mags and
friends.
rags now and then.
P: So what would you teach if you
were the trainer at a California camp?
H: The Swedish way of living!!!
P: So you're pretty proud of being
Swedish?
10
P: What do you think that the equip-
ment will look like in the future?
H: Nothing much will happen. Maybe
the boards will shrink a little as skaters
become more and more consistent
H: Definitely!! Though not about the By the way....what do you think about
P: Does it make you happy to see
your hardest competitors injured right
before a contest?
H: Depends on what guys....no, not
really.
P: Musik?
H: All kinds!
P: Including disco? Getting pretty
trendy, huh?
H: Yes, because if you go to a disco
with a chick you have to look like you
dig it.
P: I hope it's not the same with skat-
ing musik.
H: It depends.
P: So you mean that Simon and Gar-
funkle would make you aggro enough
to skate okay?
H: Gimme a break...fast musik...loud
musik...type CH 3 and Subhumans!
P: Does skating and punk have any-
thing in common?
H: Yeah.
P: I guess you slam too.
H: Yeah, but it depends on what kind
of shitheads there are around. But if
Bauta is with me, I've got nothing to
worry about. As my lifeguard he
serves his purpose perfectly fine. I
don't think that anybody is too big for
him. Well, maybe I am, as a skater.
P: How long do you think that you'll
be skating?
H: Not too long, unless they start sel-
ling new knees. Right now mine are
terrible. Sore and full of water. You
should see me fall nowadays. I can't
even do kneeslides anymore!
P: Yeah, I've seen you, ha ha. Well,
while talking about knees, what is The
Locals?
H: The world's first skate rag. Every-
body else stole my idea. It isn't very
serious, but goddam fun. Kinda pro-
vocative against every other skater
except from Hazze Lindgren, the
other "Local." It's a very good way of
taking people's money away from
them, subscriptions, etc. HA HA. Me
and Hazze arranged a series called.
"Locals Cup," with cheap prizes and
high entering fees. Made some good
bucks even there. I won, by the way!
P: Kinda like a certain Mr. Rocco's
way of earning money, huh?
H: Hey, everybody needs money,
right? If people are stupid enough to
buy my mag, it's up to them. So every-
body who wants to buy it, just send a
lot of money to me, and I'll send you
the mag. If you're lucky, you might
even become a member.
P: So what should I ask you now?
H: Ask me what I did in the States!
P: What did you do in the States?
H: Skated Whittier...sort of tricky to
skate on cement when you've spent
all your life skating wooden ramps.
Also, Del Mar, though I broke a rib the
day before the CASL contest, so I
couldn't enter that one. I also skated
Smith's ramp at Denise's, drank a lot
of burping liquids, checked out some
punk gigs, and I also saw Stacy P.
without shades, and that was really a
great experience.
P: Closing comments?
H: I simply don't know any such. Say
HI to Paul Hoffman!!!
P: What would you do if you were
Ronald Reagan?
H: Build a hell of a lot of skateparks,
and then "shove it"!!!!!
