TRASH
Who knows what? Well, pardner, we know
all! Just as boredom was staling our minds,
out of absolutely nowhere appears this
full-splash '83 Cadillac Seville (all white, no
less) stroking into the parking lot. As if by
radar, the inexcusable Traitor Vee's' eyes
turn, he screams 'El Gato!' Sho-nuf, out of
the Cad steps one of the most legendary
skaters ever to have touched concrete.
After a few intros and other formalities, we
came to find out that Eddie Elguera is now
one of the top freestyle skiers in the world.
He was thus flowed the proper 'SKATE &
DESTROY tee and hinted towards a
future skate photo session.
L to R: Lowboy, 'El Gato' and Traitor Vee.
Speaking of legends, it has come to our
attention that the scene in (infamous)
Dogtown has suddenly re-kindled. New
blood, Christ Hosol, is now sessioning
with Jay Boy, Pat Ngoho, Stacy, Dennis
'Polar Bear' Agnew, and T.JA.
Furthering the legions of legends was
Jay Smith in his girlfriends top-fuel street
racing machine. Live fast...it's exciting.
It took awhile but things are finally sorted
out for our MID-AMERICA RAMP CLASH.
Details are as follows: Date: June 12,
1983, Place: Britt Parrot's ramp in
Nashville, Tennessee. Thanks to Britt
and Joe Bowers for their help in organizing
this event.
The SKATE ROCK tape is completed,
so buy it now. 9 bands; THE BIG BOYS,
BLACK ATHLETES, DRUNK INJUNS,
THE FACTION, J.F.A., LOS OLVIDADOS
MINUS ONE, RIOT 303, and THE
SKOUNDRELZ. Also rumors have it that
there is a tape release party in the works
featuring all of the bands featured on the
tape. Potential date is Memorial Day
weekend at The On Broadway in S.F.
Rock Skate, live!
Back to ramps. The Summit Ramp in
Nor Cal has been the focus of much skate
action, including a semi-pro skate contest.
Now we (THRASHER) have been ap-
roached by it's owner Craig Ramsay to do
a PRO RAMP contest at this spot.
Spy News: One of our well-placed
internal spies has infiltrated the Upland
fraternity to discover that Don Hoffman
(video master and fantasy voyeur) has quit
managing the Pipeline and is now persuing
a career as an actor.
The Milwaukee Journal yields further
skate knowledge. It seems that the old Turf
Skatepark in Greenfield, WI has been
reopened as a night club 'Bell E. Buttons,
featuring nude dancers. It seems that the
club was shut down because it was in
violation of municipal zoning codes
because city permits had been issued
solely for the use of skateboarding. The
owner had obtained the permits from the
old owner. The local council had approved
the permit for operation in Jan., under the
impression that it was to resume its
function as a skatepark. But no! Instead
they open a place for naked broads to
dance and there's a two softdrink minimum
(no alcohol is served) at $3.25 a shot.
The new owner of the now closed strip-
joint said he might reopen the building
as a skatepark and charge $11.50 for
sessioning time and offer free entertainment
featuring nude dancers. Sounds like a plan.
INTENSIFIED SKATE HARASSMENT
The worse case of skate harassment
that has reached our ears to date:
It seems that in our fair town of San
Francisco, the last word in "Authority"
(the lawmen) are beginning to start their
own new trend of harassment of the
innocents. In the Sunset district, Friday
the 15th of April, the victim (whose name
shall be withheld for the sake of embarass-
ment), a married man in his early twenties,
skated from his house to purchase some
sandwiches, for he and his wife, at a
nearby store. What is usually an ordinary,
simple routine, turned into a skater's
nightmare. He was abducted by a black &
white police paddy (van) wagon on the
corner of Fourth and Lincoln. From the
victim's description of the ordeal, the two
officers of the law (one dressed in a blue
jumpsuit with a sewn-on badge) occupying
the vehicle pulled his shirt over his head to
reduce his ability to struggle. His wrists
were then bound with white cords (not
handcuffs). He was beaten and extremely
humiliated. They pulled down his pants,
called him a fag, while grabbing his private
parts. The ordeal lasted nearly two hours
as the van cruised the City.
At this point he says that one of the
police officers attempted to bind his feet.
The victim managed to struggle enough to
kick his assailant in the face, then began to
scream "bloody murder."
Panicking, the officers dumped him onto
the street somewhere around Hayes and
Divisadero streets. His pants were at his
knees, his nerves a wreck as he rose to
see, a block away, the officers of the law
dumping his board, money and posses-
sions, out of the van onto the sidewalk
All he can remember is that the officer who
did the assaulting was a big, chubby, man,
40 to 45 years old, with light brown hair,
while the driver was in his early thirties
with a lighter build.
Is that what you call "To Preserve and
Protect"? OUR ASS! This is just one
isolated incident. Multiply that by a million
skateboarders and see how many horror
stories you'll hear.
On a brighter note, two days later on
April 17, 1983, history was made. The first
ever Streetstyle contest was successfully
pulled off. Another "first ever" was the fact
that it was the first time that an Amateur
came out on top of the Pros.
Who was the guy to beat out top
streetstyle skaters like Chris Cook, Rob
Roskoff, Steve Caballero, Kevin
Thatcher, Neil Blender, Billy Ruff, Street
Scott, Jay Adams, Christian Hosol,
Stacy Peralta, and many more? Check
the next issue for the most explosive
party/event ever to hit San Francisco,
THE INVASION OF THE SKATERS
FROM OUT OF TOWN."
STICKER WINNER
Here it is, the winning entry to the slightly
revised THRASHER-sticker-in-the-
wierdest-place contest. The revised
contest is the THRASHER sticker-in-the-
coolest-place contest, and this sticker is
definitely stuck in a cool location.
The fact that the sticker found its home
on a street sign in at middle class suburban
neighborhood in Colorado means: (a)
typical suburban individuals may know
more than we thought; (b) the company
that makes street signs has a skater
working for them; (c) the THRASHER
mentality is taking over the world and this
is proof.
