Real Skating
Well, here it is 1983. that makes it about
oh, eight or nine years after I first started
skating The one question that I used to
hear a lot was. "Wow, like, how long have
you been skating, man? Now it seems the
only thing I ever hear is: "Wow man, like do
you still skate? whether I happen to be
skating at the time or not. So I just give the
usual answer, "Yeah, man I still skate, as I
wonder to myself how they can be so lame
minded. I guess you can't really blame
them, though. If they think. "Well, here's a
guy who's got some notoriety, we've seen
him in the mag (I'm talking about the first
mag), and we see him skate. OK, fine.
Then we don't see him in the mag and we
don't see him skate. Does that mean he's
not skating? Maybe yes, maybe no. Only
his skate mechanic knows for sure.
The point is, once a real skater, always a
real skater. Whether you skate constantly
or just have the right skate of mind, only
you know as you lay at night dreaming of
that outrageous move you just conquered.
Or, you worked your fingers raw sweeping
out some half-ass ditch, just to get a couple
of measly runs in, or perhaps you just
talked your friend into letting you build a
ramp in his backyard only to turn around
and have to tear it down because of some
wimpy non-skaters reason. Only then will
you say to yourself, yes that's right people.
I am a real skater.
Yes, I live to skate, skate to live, skate or
die, skate or be late, skate or hate, skate or
go home, skate or come home, skate or be
discombobulated, skate or be left behind.
skate or be forgotten, skate or be pitied and
looked down upon by the entire human
race.
A Question of Freestyle
Dear Rick,
DRB
Here in the Seattle area there aren't very
many real skaters. Sure we have a lot of
people who happen to ride skateboards.
but they are mostly total hippies who can't
skate worth squat
I am 13 and have just gotten into frees-
tyle and I have a couple of questions
First of all, now that this trickster freestyle
trip is really growing, do you think it will
keep on growing, or fade off?
Second, I was just down at Skate City for
the Christmas Classic (it was hot!) and
everyone said it is closing temporarily.
other people said it was closing perma-
nently. If you have any details at all, could
you please fill me in?
Thank you, Steve Fletcher
Mercer Island, Washington
I hate questions about freestyle.
Why? Because to me it's boring. Stay-
ing in one spot, hopping around, it gets
monotonous. Now that's just my opin-
ion because I never was into freestyle. I
just can't get any feeling out of it. It's not
even like street skating. There's no real
gut feeling involved. I really don't see it
getting anywhere even close to, say,
vertical skating, which is, far as I'm con-
cerned, the only kind of skating there is.
Of course, I'm not trying to put anyone.
down for freestyling. if that's what
they're into. If you skate freestyle, far
out, solid and right on. I just don't dig it.
As of this writing, Skate City in Whit-
tier has water in the bowls and is not
open. Furthermore, there have been re-
ports of skaters being busted and or
kicked out. As far as being permanently
closed, who knows, it is now. That's all
she wrote.
RAMPING OUT
Dr. Blackhart.
Blikhet
I was wondering if you could send me
some blueprints for a half pipe. We have
one at our park but it's bunk. The owners.
are too concerned about making the place
an arcade than fix the pipe. The park's fal-
ling apart, too. Cracks everywhere. So, if
you could find it in yourself to dig up some
blueprints it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jim Poe

Hey, no problem. Check out the Feb-
ruary issue. This is an excellent exam-
ple of a fairly easy ramp to build. Al-
though there are many different ways to
build, this one works well. So, get down
to the lumber yard and get down to skat-
ing.
