GLOSSARY OF
SKATE TERMS Palmdale Ramp
INCREDULOUS-A statement of intent
that seems unbelievable and yet still has a
hint of credibility. Example: "You mean you
found a perfect 10 ft. deep, kidney pool
with 20 ft. of flat bottom...that's incredul-
ous!" A look of incredulousnecessity.
UNRULY-Almost disgusting and semi-
obscene. Shouldn't even have happened
or been pulled off. Example: "That frontside
hang-up grind was unruly, he shouldn't
even have made that."
NOT EVEN-not even.
REALM-The whole spectrum of
skateboarding and everything that evolves
from it and revolves around it.
H
Resurrected from the dead: the one and
only Rodd Saunders-now masquerading,
as a roustabout-is attempting a comeback
as "The Classical Skater." His term, not
ours.
In fact, Steve Olson and our loveable
Dr. Blackthing held an impromptu skate
session in our editorial offices. Damage list
is as follows, two broken drafting tables,
six lacerated ankles, one broken chair, a
cracked comode, a busted door, and last
but not least, a heavily scuffed floor that
required waxing and finishing. Thanks
guys, it's nice having friends, why don't
you take all our money too! Come back
soon, we'll be waiting.
Some of you readers might be wonder-
ing why, in some copies of last month's
issue there was a page missing. Well it
seems that some "older-than-thou" types
(names with held) didn't dig the content of
said page, and therefore censored it from
you. A sort of "we can't let young minds be
exposed" gesture. Don't get gypped,
regardless of what your mother thinks.
UNITED SKATE SCENE
There's ramps around everywhere. The
Sheethead Skate Team in Chico, Ca. has
a good halfpipe and Mark Mastrangelo
said there's a gnarly halfer, owned by
surfers in Methuen, Mass. Mike DeLong
said that there are several ramps under
construction in Knoxville, Tenn. Puker of
the Toke Team tells of ramps in Rockville
and Potomac, Maryland. In North Carolina,
Mark Duong has a halfpipe in his back-
yard. Pools shall not be forgotten. There's
a highly skateable pool in Simi Valley,
informs one Steve.
The phones here at THRASHER have
been ringing off the hook with suggestions
for the second THRASHER sponsored
invitational ramp competition, "The Middle
America Ramp Clash." Heading the top of
the prospective competition sites is Joe
Bowers' ramp in Oak Ridge, Tenn. But
you never know, maybe we'll have more
than one contest and we'll need another
location. So, keep building and sending
photos.
Speaking of ramps, our very own Doctor
in residence, R. Blackhart, paid a call to
our financial department and so informed
us that he's now in the process of con-
structing his very own ramp. The cost of
said info-$100.00-who said that the
cost of medicine was cheap?
ROCK SKATE
We know all you music/skate junkies are
all craving our up-coming "skate bands
only tape. Hold your "pockets of pretty
green, it's coming your way real soon.
Latest, out of the studio is Los Olvidados,
and coming in with a new addition to the
tapes line up are The Big Boys.
Mr. Wilson from Halifax N.S. Canada
says that his skate communique machine
has been churning out massive interna-
tional info.
It seems that the Kellingrove Skate park
in England is still in ripable condition and
lots of other parks are being built or
renovated.
There are only two skaters in the
U.S.S.R. and they repeatedly do rail slides
on the Kremlin Wall!
Kiyose skatepark in Japan is happening!
It has a halfpipe that's 15 ft. high with 1%
ft. of vert and 25-30 feet across.
H+E
In the Netherlands are some good
ramps, a new one in Amsterdam. Plus
contests and demos that are all skater
organized.
Most of the skaters in Italy are into
slalom, although there is a nice indoor
skatepark in Torinto, and a good halfpipe
in Geneva.
The Linkoping Skate Dominate Sweden
team did a demo for 1000 people one
evening during the Swedish Grand Prix in
Tennis.
"Gee, thanks Mr. Wilson!"
A skateboarder is skating across
Canada for the benefit of the handicapped.
Twenty-nine year old Don Taylor's
skateboard marathon began August 8,
1981, in Vancouver, B.C. and he has been
averaging 35-50 miles a day. He was
forced to stop at Thunder Bay in Dec. '81
due to bad weather. He began again in
July '82
All along the way he promotes work of
the centers for the mentally handicapped
and the sport of skateboarding.
Taylor says of his trip, "I am a favorite
target for dogs, but people have been
great."
For energy he carries a backpack filled
with chocolate bars, which he constantly
consumes. He estimates he expends
10,000 calories a day compared to a
normal 2,000 to 5,000.
He's been combatting the forces of
nature along his way, at one point while in
Ontario he was stalked by some animal for
a few miles during the night, while again at
other times, he's had to skate in tempera-
tures just above the freezing mark. He's
had hypothermia eight times already.
The end of his trans-Canada journey lies
at St. Johns Newfoundland but he would
like to extend it into the U.S. or the U.K.
Video Notes: No doubt you've heard of
Don Hoffman's heavy-duty skate video.
No harsher critic than Mofo, he's called it
"The ultimate video experience." It's worth
checking.
MORE RAMP JIVE
Concrete is somewhat "passé" at least
as far as new skate structures are con-
cerned. We notice the presence of trees
and other natural elements incorporated
into ramp structures more often these
days.
MORE GLOBAL TIDBITS
Constant communications from Italy
yields that skaters shred the fountains
whenever the authorities drain them.
Agent extraordinaire, Jan Soderhall of
Sweden, tells us of heavy indoor skate
action. Likewise is evidence of increasing
heavy activity in Japan, Australia, and New
Zealand.
VARIABLES
Now that Skate City has been shut
down, for who knows what reason and
really who gives a fook, Sir Lance of the
Mountain's ramp has become the focus of
heavy activity in the Whittier area.
More Vari-Able stuff-Ray Losi Sr. (aka
Big Daddy), and his son Ray Jr., were in
New York doing one of their many "shows"
when Jr.'s eye was caught by a leggy
blonde. Results, a heavy slam due to
roughly navigatable, icy turf, plus a
mandatory broken legbone due to sexist
motives.
Speaking of broken legbones, Seaflex
signature dude, Mark Edwards managed.
to create, what he calls, "A freestyle trick
that is so dangerous, that it has only been
done once." The trick starts out like this, as
witnesses explain it, first you drink a lot of
beer until you get real dizzy, then lie down
in bed and start spinning. Next you call
your friends and tell them to come to your
house, turn on the stereo and start dancing
and screaming. Next you get out of bed
and join them, you jump in the air and
before you land on your board, you vomit
all over the place and land on the board,
breaking your leg. Mark doesn't recom-
mend this trick to novices or the
squeamish. As of yet the trick has no
name, any suggestions?
QUOTES FROM THE GUT
"We're gonna pack some extra
grindmasters and just take off." Don
Pendleton of J.F.A.
"I like T. & A. as much as any man."
Jerry Madrid.
"Wot, a THRASHUH Magazine T-shut.
ol' right!" Keith Levine & John Lydon.
