Lance Mountain?
What can you say about Lance. He
personally scarred every inch of lip at this
park. Egg plants, 360 degree lien, fakie
plants, he can pull 'em all. Lance is
unpredictable. He could take this one.
Okay, thanks Gnarl. We'll get back
'atcha later on. Right now, we've got Keith
Butterfield over in the freestyle area after he
just took first in the Sponsored Am freestyle
event.
Keith how did you do today?
Well, I took first. My first run was
satisfactory but my second was terrible. I
had a good time. Good contest.
How are the Pro's skating today?
Rodney's going to win. Primo is blazing.
Everyone is rippin' but there's only five or
six, you know.
Think you'll be up there soon?
Rocco told me I should go Pro and
others have said I should do it, but, not with
the way I skated today. Obviously I'm not
experienced enough because I gag under
pressure.
Thanks, Keith. We also have word on
the Unsponsored Am freestyle with
another Nor Cal trickster Ray Gardea,
taking that event. Now back over to you,
Gnarl.
Well, I'll tell ya Ted, Chris Miller has just
put on a show over here in the keyhole to
capture the Sponsored Am pool event. But,
not before surviving the hotly contested
and tightly scored final onslaught by Eddie
Reautigui (2nd), John Lucero (3rd), and
Kevin Staab (4th).
Chris, you won the amateur here, a
repeat of your performance at Upland last
week. What do you think?
I think I'm pretty happy.
Are you happening.
I guess. It was close, I just got lucky.
Maybe I'll go Pro at Del Mar, or whatever's
next.
Who's going to be your toughest
competition?
Everybody.
Thanks, Chris. Back to you Ted.
Gnarl, I've got Rob Roskoff from Cherry
Lane Ohio here beside me, Rob just pulled
a stalling invert that was so long the whole
park just went silent as he pulled it back
into the tri-bowl.
Rob, what do you think of the scene out
here in California?
It's great, really hot.
Does it push you to skate a little harder?
Yeah, 'cause it's hard to get runs in. The
whole park is pretty nice.
What's brewing in Ohio?
There's going to be a mini-series
through Ohio, Detroit, Tennessee, In-
dianapolis, they're trying to get that
together. There are a lot of skaters out
there.
Thanks Rob, keep skating.
Right now, we're going to check in on the
Pro freestyle program over here in the
banked freestyle area.
Per Holknekt, I see you got a new
camera. How's it going?
Click! Whirrrzzzzt! Yeah! Pretty good.
What's new?
Rodney's tricks. I called him the other
day and asked him about his new tricks
and he couldn't even explain 'em. That
tells the whole story.
What does it take?
Discipline. That's what it takes. Everyday
of skating. What Rodney does is, if he
misses a trick, he does it about five times
and if he still misses it he'll stop and go
back to it later. And eventually he'll get it.
Okay, thanks Per, and we wish you the
best of luck, but right now the subject that
is on everybody's mind and on everyone's
body also is the rain. It's raining at Skate
City...and yes, we've just got the word from
Don Hoffman that a rain delay is in effect
and all the proceedings will resume
tomorrow, Thursday. With me now is
Jeanne Hoffman. What can you say,
Jeanne?
Well, it's really a rotten break. Can you
believe two days of rain in two weeks and
we catch both of them. It's still exciting
though and the turnout has been real
good! I hope everyone will come back
tomorrow.
Okay. We would also like to give a heap
of thanks to Jeanne and her girls, who
graciously volunteered their most efficient
help in registration and statistics tallying.
Carol Sanderson, Joyce Nichols, Sonja
Catalano and Peggy Heath, as well as big
daddy Frank Hawk should be commended
for their fine efforts, which really help keep
an event like this running smoothly.
As the umbrellas go up and the skating
surface takes on a watery sheen we will
take our leave over to the Cove Theater in
Hermosa to see The Joneses', Steve
Olson's band. So until then this is Ted
Tharee...and Gnarl E. Grind...saying, see
you at the show. Until then, skate safe
today, and skate tomorrow.
Hey! We're back again, this is Ted
Tharee...and Gnarl E. Grind...coming back
at ya live from the Cove Theater in
Hermosa Beach where hundreds of punks,
preps, wavers, rockers, and beach
hangers have conglomerated to see a
show featuring The Joneses, Red Kross,
and The Alleycats. At $7.00 a pop it looks
like somebody's getting reamed here,
Gnarl.
Yeah, Ted, it's a shame for these kids to
have to pay this heavily for a badly
produced and coordinated show such as
this one. The good size crowd here at the
Cove has been waiting for over an hour for
The Joneses to come out. Seems to be
electrical malfunctions.
Thanks Gnarl. Meanwhile let's take a
look around at some of the notables here
tonight. I see "Bulky" Olson himself sitting
over there chatting with K.T., Fausto,
Duane Peters and side kick Tom Bixby. P.
Holknekt, his camera, and a lady friend just
sat down up front, and hey! there's Paul
Hoffman checking the terrain and Annette
of The Bangles, what....Alabama Jay's
here, whaddya say Jay?
Sheeit, what 'er you guys doin' here?
Came down to see the Whittier Christ-
mas Classic, thought we'd check into a
show.
Let's go ride that pipe!
Alright Jay, always stoked...and here
come The Joneses, now let's see if we
can't get a closer look, Gnarl (shove)...
whoa, watch it Ted...you assh't§
(slamẞ%/Sskank%Se£, flabadaba)....
Well, it looks like we lost Gnarl, hey!
Who cut the power, it's starting to get ugly
in here. I hear glass shattering in the
streets, these punks are pouring into the
streets of Hermosa, smash "%"
AARRGGHH!!
Good evening and welcome to the six
o'clock edition of the evening news on this
Thursday, Dec. 27th.
I'm Jim Shatmire.
A big item in sports tonight, as Neil
Blender of Anaheim, Ca., took first place in
the $1,000.00 Skate City Pro Christmas
Classic out in Whittier today. But not
without a tough push from teammate Billy
Ruff (2nd), of San Diego, and rival team
duo, Lester Kasai (3rd), and Christian
Hosoi (4th).
It wasn't easy for powerskater Blender,
who hasn't seen the winners circle in
sometime, to overcome the hot skating
that was in effect at this rain delayed event.
Coming back from a severe hipper that he
sustained during a semi-final, losing match
up, with Billy, Neil came back strong with a
barrage of contorted plants, and demented
board slides, and aerials. Neil the show-
man, put together several flawless runs in
coming back from the losers bracket,
barely edging out Lester Kasai in the
semis, only to meet up with Billy again in
the main event.
The Ruff kid had skated through the
finals with trick to trick precision, hardly
losing a matchup the whole day. Billy
combined back to back bio backside airs,
liens, and Miller flips into 540 degree flips.
At one point, during a match up with
Christian, Billy dropped in and performed
without music, to a silent gallery of blown
away spectactors.
It was Ruff for Hosoi on this skateoff as
Billy matched Christian's score twice
before advancing. Christian, although
blasting some of the highest aerials on the
day during this matchup, bailed on his last
move in one run, which could have made
the difference. Hosoi pulled a lien air that
was so high some photographers got off
two shots. Other moves in Christian's
repertoire included deathly high mute airs,
ollies, and his own version of the "Boneless
One." Both Christian and Billy were heavily
fatigued from having to go the two extra tie
breaking runs. Christian had no more left in
him when he went up against Lester Kasai,
who was still fairly fresh and popping side
to side frontside, backside, and alley oop
aerials at over 4' levels. Lester blazed both
of his runs to take 3rd place, settling
Christian into 4th.
Other outstanding performance were
turned in by Mike McGill (5th), combining
contortion on his handplants with board
grabbing, fakie 360 degree airs. Tony
Hawk, who makes all of his difficult tricks
look routine, lost his board during what
proved to be a critical run against Lester,
and had to settle for 6th.
In the Pro freestyle main event it was as
everybody suspected. Rodney Mullen
taking first place honors with Primo
Desiderio 2nd, Per Welinder 3rd, and Per
Holknekt rounding up 4th. Rodney is so
flawless during his routines that it is hard to
realize how difficult some of his unlimited
supply of tricks really are. What looks like
routine space walks are compounded by
the fact that Rodney is smiling and waving
to the crowd and he is rolling backwards
instead of forward.
Primo did his best to try and upset
Mullen with his contrasting style that relied
on super quick, to the beat, footwork and
rail, and fingerflip tricks.
Per Holknekt
Rodney and fans
Neil Blender
(
SIDE
Welinder had some difficulties in his
routines but managed some mind boggling
riffs that were highlighted by his handstand
flips.
One highlight in this event was Tony
Hawks' hilarious "impressions" routine
where he imitates the other skaters' styles.
His version of D.P. was worth his 5th place
finish by itself.
In an unrelated incident last night down
in Hermosa Beach, two reporters were
pummeled severely when they got caught
up in a riot at the Cove Theatre.
That's the news. Have a nice tomorrow.
Good Night.
