QUESTIONS ARE MANY
I am an avid skater and have my talents
developed toward freestyle. I used to skate
the Endless Wave and I still skate our
halfpipe every other day. My questions are
many, but I feel that skaters would like to
know these answers.
Layback Calzada
Oxnard, CA
A: Is Jeff Newton seriously thinking of
adopting Chris Miller?
Well, I'll tell ya, considering that New-
ton is looked upon as the father of
skateboarding in Texas, it's possible.
But the rumor that you speak of is open
to pure speculation only, at this time.
B: Is it true that T Hawks dad had any-
thing to do with the scoring at the Rusty
Harris finals?
The father son Hawk combo is part of
a long line of skating familyism that
began with the skating Albas and con-
tinued with the skating Losis. But the
fact that Mr. Hawk coordinated the RHS
Pro Am and the final event was held at
Del Mar Skate Ranch. Tony's home pool.
really shouldn't lead you to come up
with any ideas concerning favoritism.
C Have you witnessed the infamous Roc-
co Hat Trick? (How about an "On Board
feature on it?)
It's not the infamous "Rocco" hat
trick that you speak of, it's the infamous
Paul Hoffman" hat trick in which he
spins 360's on the nose while doffing
his hat, passing it around the back and
back up onto his head. Sounds simple.
right?
D. Can Kasai outskate Hosoi? After wit-
nessing firsthand at Del Mar, it seems to be
true.
It seems to me, and contest statistics
show, that both are pretty much match-
ing each other air for air these days..
That is, if contest results are any indica-
tion.
E Is Billy Ruff the greatest all-around
skater?
You can decide that for yourself when
THRASHER Mag interviews Bill next
month.
F: Have you heard anything about Eddie
Elguera coming out of retirement?
You ever stop to think that maybe he
never retired in the first place? C'mon,
give the guy a break, he just may be
skating some perfect pool right now, as
you read this. Actually, the last I heard,
he was off to Mexico to run a ranch, or
something. I have received a few letters
asking about "The Cat." I'll check it out
and get back, Jack.
G: Does Primo Desiderio own a disco in
the Phillipines?
There's no telling where Primo, the
performer, picked up his fiery brand of
fancy footwork, à la Travolta. I think
maybe the one in the Phillipines is just
one of many in a chain of Primo Discos.
H: Why does Eric Graham throw his board
so hard when he rides (oops, I mean bail)?
It's probably just another form of re-
lease (of the board, that is). Actually, I
think he just wants to make sure he'll
have a fresh supply of new boards com-
ing in from his sponsors.
Well, hey, Layback, thanks for the let-
ter. I noticed you wrote your inquiries on
the back of some of your school work.
which, by the way, had very low marks. I
looked over the test paper and it
seemed to me that all the answers were
correct. For example, question 6-7:1
When one atom combines with another
atom, both atoms may attain an outer
shell consisting of a HALFPIPE: pro-
ducing a structure that has KIDNEY.
Maybe your teacher should give up
teaching and take up skating instead.
Power on Bro.
MISTAKEN ID
DRB staying in tune.
In the never-ending shred saga issue
back in December, there was a full-pager of
the Mutt (Rodney Mullen). It looks like his
back truck is a Tracker and his front is an
Indy. Am I right? Why would he do this?
Biff Barker
Fogtown, CA
I read the letter and referred to my
complete collection of the now world
famous THRASHER Mag, and located
the issue in question and looked at the
photo. I thought it was fairly obvious
that both trucks were in fact the new
Indy 99mm Freestylers, so you'd better
look again.
DEEP GRATITUDE
I want to thank you for your advice about
ramp skating when I wrote you in March.
I am already doing handplant airs,
backside and frontside kickturns, fakies,
and tailtaps. I skate almost every day and
on any given weekend I am down skating
my friend Dave Fairman's ramp. It is a
quarterpipe with a starting ramp and run-
way. Once again, my deepest gratitude.
Jack Mathis
Folcroft, PA
It is rewarding to know that some-
where along the line some of my own
thoughts and tips have helped a skater
to learn and progress, not just in skate-
boarding itself, but in the overall, indi-
vidual expression that skating allows
one to put forth.
