CASL AWARDS BANQUET HONORS TOP AMATEURS
FOR 1982
The CASL series for 1982 has drawn to
an end, and to wrap up the year an awards
banquet was held to honor the top amateur
skateboarders and rollerskaters of the
series. Held at the Wardlow Park Com-
munity Center in Long Beach, California,
on November 6, the banquet brought
together skaters from all parts of Southern
California and beyond.
To begin the festivities, CASL (California
Amateur Skateboard League) provided
barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs, cold
drinks, and dessert while parents and
skaters provided salads, chips, and other
goodies. The amount of food was enor-
mous, and odds are that many left
weighing more than when they came.
When the last vestiges of lunch were
cleared away, skaters and guests kicked
back to watch some great films from the
Gold Cup Series provided by Frank Hawk,
CASL president.
As time for the awards presentation
approached, the skaters lined up to
receive T-shirts sporting the CASL
emblem and tickets for the prize drawings.
The drawings were held and some super
prizes given away. A big CASL thanks to
the people from G&S, Gull Wing, Madrid,
Powell, Tracker and Vans, as well as
Whittier Skate City and Upland Pipeline
skateparks for their donations. The prize
list seemed endless-skateboards, trucks,
wheels, shirts, wristguards, hats, shoes,
calculators, tickets to Disneyland, and a
guitar,
Awards were then presented to the top
skaters of the series. Afterward, special
awards were given to: Jeanne Hoffman,
who tirelessly kept the records and got
standings out to the skaters; Don Hoffman,
our announcer, whose wit and commentary
added a great deal to our contests; John
Tassi, who could be found judging the pool
events when he wasn't competing in the
rollerskating segment; and Dave Weaver,
who did a terrific job running the slalom
events.
Recognition was also given the parents
who have helped at the various contests.
CASL parents Mr. and Mrs. Heath then

came on stage to make two presentations
of their own. The first, a huge engraved
mug, was given to Mr. Hawk for the
endless amount of time and dedication
he's given to CASL. He accepted his
award to a standing ovation. The second
was a special carrot cake requested by
Dave Weaver at the banquet planning
meeting as his favorite and, of course, the
only choice for dessert.
It was a great day for unscheduled
events, too. There were water balloon
fights, Chris Black coming out the wettest if
not the winner. Thankfully, the adults came
away without so much as a "splat" on the
back.
Freestyling was also enjoyed by those
fortunate enough to have brought their
boards. And spectators had to move
quickly to avoid being run over by the
wheelie racers.
As we finished the last of the chores, we
couldn't help remembering the fun times
and great skaters of the series, Tony
Hawk, Christian Hosoi, Mark "Gator
Rogowski, Chris Miller, to name only a few.
Thinking of all those skaters who ripped
the pools from Del Mar to Skate City would
conjure smiles and fond memories for a
long, long time. Some have gone on to the
ranks of the pros, some we'll have the
pleasure of seeing competing in CASL '83.
And not to be taken lightly are the up-and-
coming novices and beginners who are
also looking forward to another year, some
to become the great skaters of the future.
Skateboarding is definitely not dying. With
CASL skaters and CASL parents we'll be
back and we'll be looking for you.
