Dear Dr. Rick
ASK THE DOCTOR
With
Dr. Rick
Blackhart
I've been readin' about all this freestyle
stuff in the mag. Now. I'm confused by
some of the pictures, even the sequences.
Are those guys ridin special boards or
somethin ? I mean, we've been poppin'
nose wheelies and stuff but these new kids
are rad. What is it with this super trick
freestyle gig anyway?
Jas Boynton
Saint Louis, Mo.
Freestyle, let's speculate on that a bit.
Let's take a look at the new surge of
freestyle. The ultra trick, unlimited type
of which we are seeing today. To get a
better insight into this subject, I've
enlisted the help of 16-year-old super
trickster freestylist Keith Butterfield.
Keith was a little reluctant to let go of
info regarding his techniques, as
freestylers will be, but finally gave in
under pressure.
RB: Okay, Keith, what's your history?
KB: I started skating when I was about 9
years old, just skateboarding period, now
I'm 16. I guess that's been about eight
years. The reason I started doing tricks is
cause I thought skateboarding was so
cool back in 75 or so and I was only a little
runt. I lived on a military base and my friend
Mark was into skating and he turned me on
to it. I just kept on skating after that. I
entered the Oceanside Nationals in 79
and took fourth place as a novice. After
that, I just practiced and about two years
later. I entered the first Fogtown contest,
that was last year I took first place there.
Got a little stoked on that, kept practicing.
entered the Rusty Harris Pro Am series
and it's been first all the way in unspon-
sored amateur, you know, so I'm just
going to go for it
RB: Why did you decide to get into
freestyle more than just continuing
pool, and banks, and what not?
KB: I wasn't really into banks at first, I was
just into skateboarding period. I didn't even
really know about banks. I just started
trying tricks making little maneuvers and
just kept doing it. I never even thought
about entering a contest or anything, I was
just having too much fun.
RB: Why not do something rather than
nothin', right?
KB: Right, skateboarding's cool. For the
little kids out there that are just thinking that
they want to try it, they should go for it.
Don't give up, stay on it and have a good
time
RB: Okay, how about this new ultra-
trick. You do a trick, you name it and the
next day there's five variations on the
same trick. What's the story?
KB: To us, it's just freestyle our own way
It's just trick after trick, make an accident.
make a trick out of it and power on. You
name the ones you want to name, if you
can think up a good name. I don't bother to
name 'em, I just ride 'em. The unlimited.
type of freestyle we're seeing nowadays is
just going to keep going, it's going to be so
far ahead of everybody that the only
people that are going to be in on it are
going to be the people doing it every day.
RB: Uh huh, well that's usually true with
any spectrum of skating that you're
involved with. If you want to excel,
you're going to have to do it every day.
RB: What about practice?
KB: Practice is total concentration, for me
anyway. If people watch, people watch
Practicing is fun, you get high off of it.
You're just trying a trick and you don't quit.
If you miss it, you get back on and try it, and
try it, and try it till you make it. It's more
self-satisfaction to go out and practice on
your own and just blaze. I get more
satisfaction out of just practicing by myself,
than practicing in front of a crowd, 'cause
in front of people, you can't really learn a
new trick
RB: You mentioned that you are always
working on some board designs and
that you do make your own boards.
What do you look for in a freestyle
deck?
KB: I myself like a block tail that is more
towards flat than a kicktail, maybe a very
slight kick. The nose is a little different, a
little more curvature for different tricks. The
rails on my board are flat and parallel from
front wheel to back wheel. There is about
one half inch less nose than tail.
RB: Why do you even have a difference
between the nose and the tail?
KB: There are a lot of tail tricks and there
are a lot of nose tricks. For some of those
nose tricks like the 180 degree spinner
trick (Keith demonstrates), the board has
to get on that slight, certain edge before it
works
RB: Do you think freestyling is for
everybody?
KB: Yup! For everybody that wants to do it,
everybody can do it and just have...you
know, it's fun. It's true skateboarding
Freestyle, trickwise, is as far as you want
to take it. Skateboarding is freestyling
Everybody that doesn't skate and wants to
learn starts off with freestyle because
freestyle is just skateboarding. Trickster
freestyle is, you know, if kids want to do it
they can definitely do it. I think it's for the
masses
RB: It just takes that much more
practice.
KB: Yep!
