still growing quiver. He now does red-faced
maneuvers, so naturally he came in first.
Second went to Steve Rocco, third was
Kevin Harris, fourth Primo, fifth Chaput,
sixth Welinder, seventh Chris Guild and
eighth Mike Folmer.
There was a "Most 360's" event and
Rodney (naturally) twirled the most at 46.
Not far behind was Kevin Harris and then
Per Welinder.
With this break in the action before the
Open Am and Pro Am pool finals are to
begin, the parking lot was the place for the
kind of refreshment you couldn't obtain
within the park.
When the finals were finally under way,
the riders busted out with dynamic rides
that proved that the pool energies were far
from dwindling. In the Open Ams, guys like
Gary Boodt, Joe Johnson, Kevin Staub,
Todd Weseloh, Chris Stagg, and Ed
Reategui were putting in hectic routines.
The outcome was Staub in first, Neider in
second and Joe Johnson in third.
The "Gnit is out to lunch" ploy was
wearing thin and types were beginning to
ask questions. Dancer Don Hoffman said
that he felt a little cancer coming on and
that he could use a little of Dr. Gnit's cancer.
deterrent, the kind only Gnit knew how to
buy. Don's prayers were soon answered
when, not a minute later, Gnit strolled up
with a suspicious looking paper cup. I
asked him, "How was lunch?" He just sort
of sneered as he brushed some toxic
powder off his shoulder.
The crowd was at maximum proportions
as the stands were teaming with fans. This
was it. It won't be long now before this

whole series would be all over and just
another part of skate history. The Rusty
Harris Series is easily the biggest event
this year. We've witnessed the emergence
of some new pro material and a few
prospects. Teams like Sims, Zorlac,
Madrid, G&S, Powell, Tracker, Variflex,
Gullwing, and Independent were showing
some wise choices in the way of riders.
The finals were going to be tough. Right
away, the riders poured on the energy full
force.
Meanwhile over in the freestyle area,
certain luminaries were shredding heavily.
Gary Davis, the skate soothsayer, dem-
onstrated the continuous marathon style of
skating and Paul Hoffman and Potatohead
were shredding in a big way. Stacy and
even the big man behind the skateboarding
aspect (although HIS thing is surfing) of
G&S, Larry Wilson, gave the banks a try. In
fact, in a slight collision type mishap, Larry
seemed to have lost his cool shades.
Hmmmm, I wonder who found them.
Back in the pool, the power was surging
towards an overload. ("Intense Energy" as
Aggression would say.) The skaters were
hedging themselves toward a considerable
amount of money and some added prizes,
like an acoustic guitar (for first), a G&S
surfboard (for second), and a boogie board
(for third).
Narrowing things down to the choice few
last runs, the obvious contenders were Bill
Beauregard, Bill Ruff, Lance Mountain,
Lester Kasai, Tony Hawk and Christian
Hosoi. Absent from this competition were
two of the Powell/Peralta boys, Mike
McGill and Steve Caballero, both of whom
are in Spain doing some motion picture
type stuff. They would have probably made
a difference in the final outcome of this
contest. But they're not here, so I guess
that's kind of irrelevant now.
As the coalitions weeded down to the
last few, after serious, full throttle runs,
Lance Mountain took sixth (baggy shorts
and all), Christian Hosoi was in a well
deserved fifth. Bill Beauregard, an absolute
non-local, was shredding so hard that he
took fourth. Lester Kasai has this craving
for flying through the air under his own
power. This guy blasts some of the most
incredible looking air to be seen. Lester
grabbed the third place spot and a boogie
board.

The face-off was between Billy Ruff and
Tony Hawk. Both have been putting in the
most amazing performances to date. Tony
fluidly takes his moves beyond the normal
flexible capabilities of modern man. On
one incredible run, the judges scored Tony
really high. With this score, Billy had to
skate beyond his capabilities. Billy is an
excellent rider, one of the best in the
business, but in order for Billy to beat Tony,
he had to chalk up a perfect score. No
mistakes, plus being bio in every move. Bill
didn't make the par, but he sure blew
minds trying
Tony Hawk was the winner of the Del
Mar RHS contest and Bill Ruff is second.
That wraps up another series. As a
whole it was an enthusiastic ordeal. I had
to make an urgent phone call and found
the appropriate booth. Some guy came
over to me and started fiddling with the
phone, messing with my scene and
bumming my life. He said he was going to
make the phone work right. I think he was
a fag. By this time I had had enough of this
trip. I'm going home, there's somebody
waiting for me there.
