WAKE UP
Dear Dr. Rick,
ASK THE DOCTOR
With Dr. Rick Blackhart
I've really got a problem, it's more like a
skateboarder's nightmare. First of all, I love
to ride, I ride every day, but around here all
the streets are too rough, not many are
downhill enough, and the drainage ditches
are those small, useless, glass-filled, un-
rideable ones. I don't have enough money
or help for a halfpipe (everyone either
doesn't ride or isn't good with tools). So the
only thing vertical or smooth is the local
skatepark which has a waterslide, a mini
golf course and a lousy BMX course in the
same area. Well, this year they opened ev-
erything but the skatepark with no explana-
tions or anything. So now I'm stuck doing
freestyle and street riding which I'm not into
at all because it's not as fun as vertical (to
me, anyway). What can I do? Can I build or
buy something inexpensive that doesn't
need much help either? I like to do the most
exciting and fun stuff.
Thanks a lot,
Matt Kimball
Bowie, MD
Hey listen! (This guy's really got a
problem.) Quit your whimperin', pull
yourself together and wake up. You
claim you love to ride every day and
then turn around and call bunk on all the
skateable terrain. Lemme tell ya, when I
14
was skating heavily in the early days,
places to ride just didn't come up and
slap me in the face. We had to search far
and wide, high and low, vertical and
horizontal. Now I'm talkin' bailing or
sweeping down some spillway or pool
for hours just to take one run and get
kicked out. Pitbulls, unrully neighbors,
unauthorized authority types, and belly
crawling through thick underbrush with
a board strapped to your back, are all
part of the feverish skate-search at-
titude one must acquire to find the un-
real spots. Even when we did find a spot
there was no guarantee that it was going
to be skateable the next day.
As for building a halfpipe, any home-
made skate structure is going to have
some blood, sweat and tears put into it
as well as on it once you start skatin'
and slammin'. You say your friends
either don't skate or aren't good with
tools? Well, you better get some new
friends, brother!
I would have to say that you're due for
a change of attitude. Towards the posi-
tive side. If you can't seem to find a
skate spot close at hand, catch a plane,
hop a freight, stick a thumb, I don't
know. But go out there and find it. If you
can't seem to handle it, then maybe
skating's not your bag. I mean, if you
can't stand the heat, then get out of the
Dool, so to speak.

READ EM AND WEEP
Dr. Blackthing,
This is Keith Butterfield, freestylist,
street ride and vertical enthusiast, from
Santa Cruz
I'll spare my life story, but I don't have
to say the mag rips. Here are three ques-
tions:
A) Do you do the Ask The Doctor
column because you are the doctor and
you known what you're talking about or
because you're good friends with K.T. and
the mag?
B) What do you think about the trickster
unlimited type freestyle nowadays? As
always, give your full opinion.
C) Do you think skateboarding will ever
get as big as it was? If so, are you going
to be behind it as full on as you quite
possibly can? See ya around,
KB
Santa Cruz, CA
P.S. Live to skate, skate to live. Always.
Hey, Keith What's Happening!
How's it going over in Santa Scum?
And why don't you have to say the
mag rips? Think about that one. Anyway
thanks for the effort in writing this
letter. OK, let's see, another one of
these multiple question letters, eh?
Actually that's good because it allows
me to keep from getting bored reading
just one stupid question, get it?
A) Of course I know what I'm talking
about, if I didn't, I wouldn't talk. Maybe
you just don't understand where I'm
coming from. The truth of the matter is,
that the whole idea of this letter answer-
ing b.s. is to educate those skaters out
there who want to know more about
what's happening in the skate world.
When you get down to it, you don't have
to read it or believe it, but as always, I
will tell it like it is. Anyway let's trudge
onward.
B) I would like to say for those of
you out there who don't know Keith,
he's one of the best freestyle skaters
in the known world. The kind of skating
these guys are doing is totally hot and
mind blowing to watch. I don't think
it's going to go any further than the
other types of skating have, such as
bowls, pools, downhill, etc. But frees-
tyle has come a long way as far as
being publicly acknowledged. I'm sure
wherever it's going you'll be there.
C) I think skating is definitely on the
uprise. More and more I find people
who aren't into it, becoming more
interested as it grows. I do think it will
be at least as big as it was if not ten
times over. As far as being behind it
full on, you know me, I was "born to
skate," remember?
