Do you think they're just gymnasts, do
you think it's getting to be too much
like "art"? As compared to live aggres-
sion?
Yeah, it is, totally.
What do you think is the gnarliest
thing you've ever done? Something
you've attempted and pulled off.
About a 6' backside air
Where was that?
At Pipeline. There's this worker named
Scott Deluca, and he's like 6'6" and I went
up to his chin on a backside air and pulled
In the Combi pool?
Yeah, in the square pool.
Physically, are you battered, like
compared to your brother, or
compared to any other skater?
Ah, not really
Competitively, how long do you see
yourself skating?
Oh, as long as there's contests,
skate 'em. Cuz I don't really care how I
do, I'll just stay in it for the sake of the
sport.
For the sake of competing?
Yeah, it's a challenge to skate a contest,
a challenge to myself. The love of compe-
tition, the thrill of victory, the agony of
defeat.
Let me know about the Hester Series?
It was a cool series, it was the best
series, for sure. 'Cuz Henry was a skater
he could relate to the way everybody felt
about how to run a contest and every-
thing.
There was a need for bowl-pool com-
petition.
Yep, Olson won the first.
Do you think he deserved that?
Yeah, he skated good that year.
Did you skate the Winchester pool?
Yep, I skated it a lot, I skated two
contests there. That was a cool pool, it
was really fun.
How'd you do there?
I don't remember the first time. The
second time I got fourth place. Me and
Stacy Peralta were battling it out. 'Cuz the
time before that we had a contest at
Lakewood and he got fourth there and I
got fifth. So we were battling it out at the
contest at Winchester, it was opposite. I
got fourth and he got fifth. Anyway, back
to the Hester Series. No idea of when the
first one was. There was Pipeline, Big O.
Del Mar, Winchester, there were five of
them. I know there were. Sponsors were
the same people as they are today. Santa
Cruz, Sims, G&S, um, Kryptonics was big
back then,
How many vertical terrain areas are
there to skate in a 10-20 mile radius in
your area?
'Bout two, just the skateparks, not that
many empty pools.
Upland and Pomona, right?
Yeah, there's some pools, but they're a
bitch to find and then if you can find them,
the owners don't let you skate anyway.
What's the best place you've ever
skated?
Silly question. Vertical wise or Win-
chester was fun, so was the Baldy Pipeline.
That was a blast
Is it still a bust, or what?
No, we skated it for awhile, a couple of
times, about a couple of months ago.
There was no snow, so there was no
water that came down, so we skated a lot.
You ever skate Berryessa?
You mean that big 30 foot pipe? I
haven't skated it, my brother did though.
Isn't it in Sacramento or something?
It's north of San Jose. Do you keep
pretty clean habits as far as drugs and
alcohol, that type of thing?
I only drink beer, I don't do drugs.
What kind of girl do you like? What
kind of music do you listen to?
No trendy girls, I want an original. No
fashion victims, no trendy headbands, no
topsiders. No Preppy-Trendy. I'm not a
classified music listener. I like a lot of
music. I wouldn't go buy Led Zeppelin,
shit like that. I like The Wild Ones
What's your standard apparel when
you skate a pool?
Ah, just pads, knee pads, elbow pads,
helmet, then you got your shorts and your
shirt.
It doesn't matter if it has a lot of color.
No, it's not right now, but I think once
you start getting into...if and ever they
started getting into television, where it
was televised and announced, getting the
public, besides the skateboarders, to
come, I think they'll start getting into
uniforms. Team uniforms. Things of that
sort.
Would you rather skate in a pool or a
halfpipe, have you any preference?
Pool. Yeah, I like pools with big coping
that sticks out a lot. It's more of a challenge.
Nowadays, you look at these pools like at
Marina and Del Mar, it's barely even got
any coping. It's almost too easy. Then you
go to Pipeline, it's got big coping, it's not
that big but, I mean, it's good coping. The
bigger the coping, obviously the radder
you're gonna get
Explain to us a little bit, when you went
to Texas for that backyard series, why
did you knock over that Coke
machine?
Uh, that was all rumors.
Noo, I've heard facts. Valid evidence.
We got a little bit tipsy one night, kinda
rowdy, I don't know. The thing just started
fallin all over the place. I was thirsty.
runnin' all over the place and skatin' and
I wanted a Coke and didn't have any
money, so, I don't know, mysteriously the
Coke machine, it just fell over. It happened.
It just kinda fell over and I grabbed a Coke
and ran back to the hotel and drank it. I
don't know how it happened.
Did you get kicked out of your
lodgings?
No, it was in another motel, not in our
motel, so we didn't get caught
In the past year, have you put more
time in on the street or in a pool?
I'd say it'd have to be more the street
terrain. For awhile there, I wasn't really
skating at all. I was taking months off, but
then when I started getting into it again, it
was the street. No matter where you go
there's a street. No where where you go
there's always a curb, you know you can't
always go find pools. Sometimes you
skate a pool so much you get so bummed
on it and you want a change for awhile.
You can see skating a lot more years?
Yeah.
Till how long?
Probably forever Yeah, Forever.
