Jim Korten and third and fourth went
to Steve Steadham and H.S. veteran
Bert Lamar, respectively.
The time for the main event, the pool
finals, was at hand. Skateboarding
reached new highs and explosive
proportions on this day. The crowd
was the most enthusiastic ever, and
the action in and around the pool was
that of utter dignity and precarious-
ness.
When the pack was narrowed down
to eight riders, the outstanding
performances were carried out by
Hosol, McGill, Hawk, Malba, Miller,
Ruff, Smith and Kasai. These eight
then battled it out for the cut to the top
four.
What eventually turned out was a
battle between SIMS/TRACKER AND
G&S/INDEPENDENT sponsored riders.
Lester Kasal for the former and Micke
Alba for the latter. The final duel was
about to commence. It was to be a
Professional against an Amateur type
of situation.
Both riders had just been subject to
several full-on, no holds barred runs.
These two young men had put up a
hectic pace, and they weren't through
yet. This is the home stretch. This is
where you call on all of your reserve
strength, if indeed there is any of that
left.

Micke had the fire in his eyes and he
probably knows this pool a lot better
than anyone else. He most likely
pioneered every line here.
Lester looked tired and weary after
the long day's competition. Micke had
his work cut out for him as he had to
beat Lester on both runs in order to
win. Micke went first at extraordinary
speed and pulled off every planned
move. Pulling out all stops, he jetted
from pool to pool. Scoring high, he
feels confident.
Lester began his run with a high
frontside air in the round bowl. He
bailed and tried again. Pulling it off, he
skated an explosive run. Unfortunately,
his bail hampered his score a bit.
Micke took his second run. This time
he was playing for keeps. He concen-
trated on his best tricks, executing
them at speed, quick and punctual, not
wasting any time setting up, but
instead making one trick lead right into
the next. Micke's own private cheering
section rose to their feet as Micke was
awarded another high score.
Lester looked as though he didn't
have another ounce of energy left in
him. Still, he took those big pushes
and plowed into the pool, blasting the
opening frontsider, pulling it off and
shredding hard through the remainder
of his routine. The strain poured from
his flesh in the form of beaded sweat.
It was evident that he was very tired,
as he struggled to keep the high level.
Lester's cheering squad yelled a
furious support as he exited the pool.
The scores were tallied and everyone
waited in anticipation. Micke Alba
became the winner of the first contest
In the Rusty Harris Memorial Series.
Lester Kasai got second place, Bill
Ruff was third and Christian Hosol
took fourth. Congratulations goes to
these young men for their superb
efforts. They skated hard and executed
a good contest.
Special thanks go to Frank Hawk, the
Hoffmans, and to all those who helped
make this contest happen.
