MAKING CONTACTS
What's Up Doc.
Im a so-so Thrasher from Huntington.
W Virginia I would like to know how to
contact a fellow in state Thrasher All L
know is that he lives 2 hours away in
Parkersburgh His name is Brian Sheppard
and he's 16 That's it. Not much to go on.
huh? I can't get a phone book for that
area and if I go up there. I don't know
where to start looking
Any advice? Please print this. Maybe
he gets Thrasher mag and can write me
This is an emergency

Boy, some people just can't get it
through their heads, the only way
you're going to get anywhere with
skating is to just skate. Go out and get
on your board and things will start
happening. The only way to meet other
skaters is through a good session
where you can lay down your lines and
scrutinize others.
Anyway, Brian, I hope you are not
sitting around waiting for this guy to
contact you, 'cause this isn't Skaters
Search Central. I did have our sub-
scription department run a computer
check on the name of this kid. Are you
sure this guy even exists? He doesn't
subscribe to THRASHER. Did you try
calling the operator? You can do a lot
with a last name. Check the high
schools in Parkersburgh.
The only advice I can give you.
Brian, has nothing to do with skate
contacts, it's about your attitude.
Never refer to yourself as a so-so
thrasher. What's so-so? I guess that
was a so-so attempt at contacting
another skater, right? If you're into
something heavy (like skating) you
must adopt the full-on attitude, only
then will things start happening for
you.

PUNKERS VS. ROCKERS VS.
COWPOKERS.
I want to subscribe and I want a T-shirt
because Thrasher is so cool. I am in a
hardcore punk rock band in Seattle called
the Rejectors. We just recorded a 7, 9-
song EP, and us and the Fartz are
planning to come down to California this
summer. The scene up here is mostly just
backyard ramps and street skating. Once
in a while, we go downtown to the parking
garages and thrash, but we usually get
chased out. Hey, if you missed the Fartz
when they went down to S.F., you missed
out big. They have a 7" EP out and are
now doing a 12" EP so get it.
The worst thing about Seattle is that
there are more heavy metal jock rockers
than punks, way more. So we can never
be safe, anywhere. Plus we've got the
urban cowpies who think that they're
tough.

BE PREPARED
Rick
I am a 13-year-old street skater and I
consider myself to be pretty good. To get
to the point, my friend and I are building a
way rad half-pipe. I would like to know
how I should prepare myself for the
radness of skating a ramp, because I
have never ridden a ramp before. Thanks
very much.
Jack Mathis
Folcroft, PA
Well, I'll tell ya', Jack. For skating
heavy vertical terrain the best way to
prepare yourself physically is to, of
course, skate as much and as often as
you can. For me, when I was at my
competitive best, that was all day
every day. It takes patience sometimes,
but if you get your basics down first
(i.e., frontside, backside kickturns and
grinds), the rest will follow in time.
Now, as far as the mental aspects of
skating go, you must want to get rad,
you want to grind, you want to get air
and most of all you want to be progres-
sive. Nobody wants to see every dwid
doing exactly the same thing.
Getting back to your question, Jack,
if you are already good at freestyle,
you're on your way to being overcome
by the sensations of the upper vertical.
Of course, you can't just go out and
expect to get in a pool and start blazing
tail slide rock 'n' roll ollie acid drops,
But you can go out and skate until
your legs are cramped, your body is
numb and your head is throbbing from
slam upon slam against the concrete,
which is inevitable if you wish to lay
down some heavy lines.
Anyway, you say that you're building
a ramp, well, there you go, you're
already on your way.

SUICIDE SESSIONS.
Enclosed are the pictures of my half-
pipe in Anchorage, Alaska. They were
taken after a windstorm blew three pieces
of plywood off the top and tore the plastic.
There are seven sheets of 4 x 8 plywood
across the top. The ramp is 8 feet high
with 8 feet of transition and has 8 feet of
flat bottom. There's two feet of vert on
one side and on the other, a platform with
a trap door. The roof extends four feet
above the platform. No, you will not hit
your head on the roof while doing a grind!!
The roof is now repaired and is
skatable in all conditions. When the guy
leaves his house behind the ramp (Mr.)
Complainer), me and my friend skate all
night suicide sessions. The guide to
staying dry sure helped, inside the malls
on Sunday is good for freestyle and the
covered garages provide fast speeds. The
Calendar is excellent. So are all the
issues of the Mag.
Thanks,
Chuck "Mr. Rad" Chism
Anchorage, AK
P.S. I noticed on the other side of the
front cover (Dec. '81) the Santa Cruz ad,
a long plexiglass tube for skating. How
about some pictures and an article.
You may never see one in Alaska,
Chuck, but that plexiglass plumbing you
speak of is a water slide. If you lived in
Southern California, you might understand.
Anyway, it was built over the Big "O
skatepark in Orange at the expense of
some of the skating area. Water slides
may be happening in Southern California,
but skateboarding is happening all over
the world. Even in harsh climates such as
Alaska's.
