            SHOWCASE
A general guide to the latest in skatedecks
and accessories.
ITEM: VARIFLEX LANCE MOUNTAIN MODEL, VARI-
FLEX CONNECTION TRUCKS, VARIFLEX "X" WHEELS
Engineered with vertical realities in mind, the Variflex
Lance Mountain signature Model is a full width deck
measuring in at 30" in length, 10% in the forward foot area
and 8% aft. Constructed from 6 plys of quality hardwood
and covered on both sides with Tufskin, a wood fiber prod-
uct, the deck features a medium concave running the full
length from nose to tail. It comes fully taped and slider bars
are included. Graphics feature a "Coat of Arms" shield top-
side and a galloping knight on the bottom.
The Variflex Connection trucks are placed 1/2" from the
nose and 6% from the tail. These extremely responsive
trucks offer an almost guaranteed "No hang-up" quality,
plus a full grinding surface of 64". Connection coping de-
vices are recommended for long truck life and longer
grinds.
The Variflex "X" wheel is regarded as one of the fastest
wheels available, using a very strong and lightweight Zytel
ST core in conjunction with a high quality resilient
urethane. The durometer is 94A with a radiused outside
edge and a conical inside, making wall to coping to wall
transitions a cakewalk. Definitely a hot set-up for any pool
or ramp situation you might encounter.
ITEM: POWELL/PERALTA RODNEY MULLEN MODEL,
TRACKER FULL TRACK TRUCKS, POWELL BONES
FREESTYLE WHEELS
One of the few pure freestyle models available, the
"Mutt" model is designed with advanced maneuvers in
mind. Length 26" with parallel rails, blunt nose and a
medium steep (16) tail that a lot of freestylers have been
craving. Width is 7", pretty much standard for decks of this
nature. Quality materials are used in its construction and
interesting graphics on the bottom catch the eye. Drilling
for truck placement is symmetrical in that there is the same
amount of nose and tail.
Trucks used here are the Tracker Fultrack Magnesium
Models adding to the extreme lightness of this set-up.
White, hard grommets from Tracker are used to increase
stiffness and stability. The width of these trucks brings the
white Bones Wheels right to the edge of the board, their
proper place for intricate rail tricks. Their diameter is 57mm
x 40mm, giving a quick roll, and the 96A hardness makes
for a positive feel on smooth surfaces.
If you're into freestyle (if you aren't, you should be), this
deck, if not the complete board, will suit you nicely.
ITEM: ZORLAC STREET MACHINE, THUNDER
TRUCKS, BONES STREET CUBIC WHEELS
Definitely a must for the trunk of any well equipped skate
vehicle, the Zorlac Street Machine is molded in the stan-
dard, flat deck, medium kick school of skate thought. The
Street Machine is strong and stiff, due to the eight-ply
hardwood construction. Length is 29" with a 9" midsection
and 72" tail, all optimum measurements for reaching the
hallowed state of mind known as "Street Nirvana." The
way out graphics should get plenty of attention as well.
Motion on this set-up is achieved through the use of
Powell Bones "Street Cubics." The only difference from
the popular "Mini Cube" is the durometer, which by the way
is 87A, a medium hardness, but still soft enough to effec-
tively reduce the vibrations that streets are known to pro-
duce.
Thunder Trucks, a relatively new company on the
scene, supplied their "Charger Model" for this set-up.
Grinding width is 5% more than enough to deny any curb
of its peace of mind. Turning is quick and precise, yet sta-
ble at higher speeds.
ITEM: SIMS "NEW WAVE" DECK, GULL WING SUPER
PRO TRUCKS, SIMS B-52 WHEELS
This new deck from Sims is guaranteed to turn some
heads down at the corner store. Totally wild and colorful
graphics on the underbelly will boggle the mind.
Skatewise, the deck is born out of 7-ply laminate, featuring
a concave nose section (10%" wide), blending into a flat
tail (8% wide), with a 15° kick. Full wheel wells round out
this model, with drilling specs at 6" aft and 1½" fore. If your
current deck is in need of replacement and your intentions
are of the vertical nature, you should find this deck a very
worthwhile investment.
This model has been set up with GullWing 9" Super Pro
(Blue) trucks to achieve maximum grinding capabilities
and on the spot turning action, the snap-on Grinders, also
from GullWing, are some of the best available. The new B-
52 wheels from Sims provide the rolling stock. They fea-
ture a radically radiused outside edge with a more conven-
tional radius on the inner side. The B-52s proved to be very
fast during our intense test session, durometer is 95A and
the narrow running surface is very conducive to controlled
sliding. All in all, a hot set-up for hot situations.
