The air contest was hectic.
Duane (top) edged out Stevie
(middle) by default as the last
flicker of sun and the beams
from car headlights provided
lighting. Anthony Dias (bottom)
faired well in the aerial depart-
ment as well as taking the Semi-
Pro division cash purse.
As the top eight were seeded on the
chart, the double-elimination allowed
only two losses during the entire
contest or you were out. It made for
unreal competition. The outcome had
Harry Williams in first with a tremen-
dous double head-to-head match up
victory over Chris Cook in the finals.
Cook's skating kept everyone on
the brink of self-destruction with his
slam-defying fearlessness. Harry skated
consistently bio routines and had to pull
out all stops to win the event. Craig
Ramsay took third with his patented roll-
out rail shattering lapovers. Gavin O'Brien,
took fourth surprising Roger Folsom,
Andy Berdsen and Ross McGowan.
The Semi-Pro event was explosive with
the likes of Peter "Kiwi" Gifford, Anthony
"Powerhouse Dias, Randy Katen and
Blazin' Bob Denike of downhill fame. The
judges, Duane Berendsen, Steve Cabal-
lero, Paul Andrakyn, Gary Boodt and Joel
Gomez, with Jim "Bug" Martino as a
roving substitute, were ready and thus the
premier event got under way.
Anthony Dias raged undefeated through
his first three matchups, dropping Gifford
and Katen to the losers' bracket. These
two battled back to get another shot at
Dias. The matchup between Katen and
Gifford was possibly the most intense of
the contest.
Gifford put in a stylish routine with bio
frontside rock 'n' rolls and crowd-pleasing.
full-length 50/50 on the steel pipe coping.
At the end of round one he led R.K. by 1/2
point. The crowd pushed in closer for the
second round screaming as Katen rolled
frontside edgers out over the coping and
blazed to lead this round by 1/2 a point.
over Kiwi. A tie match, the first and only
skate-off had to be held!
These two skaters were fully tired and
Gifford stalled in every possible way. He
retied each shoe, readjusted his pads and
had the throng at the edge of their seats.
The skate-off was totally unreal, the
crowd was in a total frenzy as these
heavy skaters went at it. As the urethane
dust settled, R.K. was declared the winner
by one point and went on to meet A. Dias
for the top prize. The atmosphere was
electrifying. Dias dropped in and im-
mediately blasted a two-foot backside
alley-oop covering 10' across the ramp,
followed by airs, lapped grinders, hovered
inverts and other rad moves for the full 45
seconds of the run. He was awarded the
highest scores of the contest, all the
judges awarding him 9 out of a possible
10 points. This score stood firm for the
match, R.K. among bellows of approval
shredded his highest scores also, but not
quite enough to beat out Dias. Tony won
the Summit IV Ramp Contest in five
straight match victories.
The contestants took a break from the
action but dusk forced the weary skaters
back on their boards for the highest air
contest. Steve Caballero, a "pacer" in the
event, consistently cleared the top of the
stick for 3 plus. Last minute entrant
Duane Peters put the pressure on Stevie
by lofting his own brand of air, and when it
was all said and done, The Master of
Disaster won the event with a 23" air,
beating out Caballero who fell on both of
his attempts.
R.K.'s headlights furnished the lights for
the award ceremonies. A general sense
of success could be felt by all who had
witnessed the 8-hour competition. The
satisfied throng dispersed to do a little
celebrating on their own.
