THE PROFESSIONALS-
I DIDN'T SEE IT COMING
Deriving itself mainly from what was
once the greatest band (the now defunct
SEX PISTOLS) in the world, THE
PROFESSIONALS carry on the rambling
tradition, minus one "John Rotten" at
vocalities and one "Sid" at bass.
THE PROFESSIONALS members
consist of Steve Jones-the mild-man-
nered cat burglar-on guitar and lead
voice, and Paul Cook-the foul-mouthed
youth from Shepherd's Bush-who bangs
the skins and yells the back-up. This
leaves Paul Myers on bass and Ray
McVeigh on the other guitar. Together as
a combo, they create the sound of good
rock 'n' roll that is so much needed in this
world today. THE PROFESSIONALS
somehow keep alive hints of the SEX
PISTOLS, only without all the anarchy.
Not to say they are compared with the
PISTOLS, but to say they've taken the
sound a big step further in the forward
(right) direction.
Most of the songs are of the driving
nature, while Steve's vocals never
sounded better (not since "Lonely Boy,"
circa "THE GREAT ROCK AND ROLL
SWINDLE"). All of the songs are of great
particular interest and to go into detail
would certainly take up most of this
publication, by golly. None of the songs
are really all that bad. In fact, soon after
listening to this disc a few times, you'll
find yourself singing along. Ex: "Pay-ola
la-la from the song "Payola" on the
album. It's an import and a little expensive,
but it's pretty well worth it.

THE
HATES
Now here is a band that is beckoning to
be recognized. Hailing from Houston,
Texas, THE HATES have sent two of their
current rage 7" EP's on Faceless Re-
cords.
One E.P. contains the classic-to-be hits
"Bored with the Boys," "City on Ice," "Do
the Caryl Chessman" and "Soldier." All of
these tunes are total "HARD ROCKERS,"
combining the sounds of THE DAMNED
with a little taste of MOTORHEAD or early
BLACK FLAG.
"Bored with the Boys" and "City on Ice"
are the songs I took a particular fancy to.
Catchy phrases on "City on Ice." The
meaning behind the songs was particularly
hard for me to actually realize but that is
not really as important as the energy. The
band is the only body that knows what the
songs reasons are. As listeners, our duty
is only to observe the methods.
The second E.P. has the cool tunes:
"All the Whites Are Going Negro," "Last
Hymn," "No Talk in the Eighties" and
"New Spartans." This E.P. was apparently
released before the other one and
stands on its own as a major local
Houston band done good. All of these
songs are way hot and show definite
promise in the light of the surging hard-
core rage of the Eighties.
THE HATES go back as far as '79. The
band consists of three members, Glen
Sorvisto-drums, Robert Kainer-bass,
vocals and Christian Arnheiter on guitar
and vocals. This three-man combo offer a
blazing barrage of beautiful noise. They
are tough-looking (sounding), kinda ugly
(but the broads probably crave anyway)
and they know what they're doing.
There are many bands out there that
are really good and are dying for deserved
attention and worldwide exposure. This is
difficult to get in most of the other
magazines around because either the
mags have a small circulation (otherwise
called local rags) or they are corporate
items and have commercial "Middle of the
Road" policies. Like THE HATES, a band
can easily get a chance. So if you know of
a band or are in a band yourself and have
a single or have some redeeming quality.
of note, send E.P. or tape, photo and a
brief description of the band and its
qualities to THRASHER MAG c/o NOTES
